to 11vira Jones,'23as, in the May, 1934, issue ofthe Arroev of Pi Beta Phi, a few weeks after herpassing in March of that year, at her home inTulsa .

)'hat inscription is echoed in the hearts ofeveryone who knew her. For a spirit which waslovely and unselfish infused itself into the heartsand souls of her friends . Loved by students andfaculty incrnhers alike, she is characterized as anenthusiastic student, with an alert mind, and agenerous and loving heart.

Elvira's love of life and her genuine interestin the world about her, did not begin with herentrance into the University of Oklahoma . Fortwo years she studied at the University of Tulsa, where she was proclaimed one of the most popu-lar girls on the campus, and where she excelledin scholarship, dramatics, and oratory . An activemember of a local sorority, she was at the centerof campus social life . Her unselfishness and hergenerosity were written indelibly through herstudent activities . With the vision born of sucha spirit, she reached forward through the years, and peering past the obstacles which loomed be-fore her, worked toward the affiliation of herlocal group with a national sorority . But she wasdestined to leave that campus and join anothernational group at the University of Oklahoma .It was here that she pledged Pi Beta Phi, and itwas to that group that site gave herself whole-heartedly and unselfishly .

Soon after her graduation, Elvira contracted anillness which was ultituatek, to result in herpassing . For several years, she suffered, but al-though her body was racked with pain, her spiritremained ever young, and her mind alert andvigorous. Soon, however, through her indomitable

will, she was able to leave her bed, and to asso-ciate with her friends once more . It was duringthis period in her life that she cultivated hertalent for writing, and many magazines havepublished her poems and children's stories . Everambitious, ever striving, Elvira was able to over-come much of her physical weakness, and to se-cure employment in a Tulsa gift shop, surroundedby the beauty and the atmosphere that she loved .For only a short time, though, was she able todevote herself to this work, as even the slightexertion of her employment once more loweredher vitality .

Elvira passed away suddenly and quietly as shewould have wished . For, active and alert to theend of her life, she defied the illness which slowlytook its toll .

Surely such a generous and loving spirit wasin the heart of Charles Wagner when he wrote:"All the strength of the world, and all its beauty, all true joy, everything that consoles, that feedshope, or throws a ray of light along our darkpaths, everything that makes us see across ourpoor lives a splendid goal and a boundless fu-ture, comes to us from people of simplicity, thosewho have made another object of their desiresthan the passing satisfaction of selfishness andvanity, and have understood that the art of livingis to give one's life."-By Mary Kimbrough,'35 .

Tripod, who might be considered an ex-studentwith the class of 1934, has disappeared from thecampus scene. The three-legged little black and white pup

recently was the subject for a column in theNorman Transcript . Wrote Roscoe Cate,'26as, cityeditor of the Transcript, in the column :A worn, dusty dog-collar hangs unused in the

garage at the home of County Judge Pendleton.Somehow, it reminds us of Eugene Field's poig-

nant bit of poetry, "Little Boy Blue," whichstarts :

"The little toy dog is covered with dust,But sturdy and staunch lie stands,

"And the little toy soldier is red with rustAnd his musket molds in his hands. . ."

The unused collar belonged to Tripod, the"orphan" dog that was the mascot of the entireUniversity section of Norman .No one knew the ancestry of the three-legged

mongrel that hippity-hopped around the campusshops and a few favored homes in the campusdistrict, scraping up a precarious living whereverit might be found. No one knew where Tripod came from, and

no one knows where he has gone . A stout-heartedvagabond in life, perhaps he chose some privatehideout to face death alone from injury or illness .

Only the collar remains as mute relic of adog that cheerfully made its own way despitethe handicap of losing a leg.The collar remains at the Pendleton home be-

cause the county judge removed it one time whenit was apparent that it was chafing the dog'sneck to a serious extent .Tripod managed to lead an independent exist-

ence most of the time. But when cold rain orsleet or other severe weather would come, Pendle-ton was always prepared to hear a quick barkoutside which meant that Tripod was politelyanxious to be a guest for a few days.

Pendleton raises clogs as a hobby, and alwayshad a corner somewhere that would serve as aguest room for Tripod .The dog never abused the hospitality . As soon

as the weather cleared, Tripod would be oil about

his own business, and probably would not showup again until the weather became bad.

HOME MAKING EDUCATION

HOME making is a joyous ad-venture-an adventure that challenges thebest efforts of the finest womanhood oftoday. Good home making develops theindividual and socializes the community.Home making conserves and strengthens

home influences and safeguards home life-home making is an economic safeguard-home making is concerned with healthand happiness and all that love and workand play can devise for the protection ofour children, our homes and our com-munities .For good home making demands lead-

ership-trained leadership and begs forwomen of vision, understanding and tact .The need for the study of the home and

its relationship--of this whole problem ofhome making and parenthood-has neverin all the history of the ages been as ap-parent as it is today.Home making is a study of the family

we live with, the food we eat, the houseswe live in, the clothes we wear and ourrelationships each to the other in ourhomes and in our communities.Home making is a study of the home

and its needs. The home belongs to itsmembers; each should share in bothwork and play . Home making is morethan housekeeping, more than clothing, feeding and housing the family ; it includesmaking the family happy, earning, spend-ing, and saving the family income ; keep-ing the family well ; caring for the sick ;entertaining our friends ; taking a vitalinterest in community affairs and keepingin touch with the world's progress .A home with boys and girls who fail

to do their part can never be ideal be-cause the foundation of real happiness liesin sharing willingly and gladly in thework and responsibility of making aworthwhile home .

Training for home membership is justas necessary as training for teaching, nurs-ing, and law making-unfortunately boysand girls are not born with all the habits, ideals and appreciations so much desiredin good home members. To learn to livehappily at home means the fine art ofliving happily everywhere, for a good citi-zen is first a good home member.-Mrs.Maude Richman Calvert,'20M .S ., in OurHomes .
