Fra Presidenten Welcome to spring and a really busy time at Mandt Lodge! As we get ready to host over 240 3rd grade students to our lodge for the annual 3rd Grade Cultural event, we had a great fish boil, and the calendar is filled with 17 Mai preparation dates, it just reinforces the variety of activities, events and opportunities that Sons of Norway has to offer. As you look through this newsletter, I hope that you find multiple things that interest you and that you want to be involved with. The Reading Circle has an exciting incentive program for this summer to encourage members to use our lodge library, the bunad class is going well, we have a Relay for Life team ready to raise money and awareness of the American Cancer Society, and the 2012 District 5 convention is coming up! Please try to find time to donate time, baked goods and/or a financial donation to our Syttende Mai efforts. We know its a busy weekend for all and any help that you can give will be appreciated! Fraternally, Darlene Arneson Wednesday May 9 Lodge Meeting (Mandt Lodge Officers will meet at 6:00 PM) The Lodge meeting (for all members & their guests) begins at 7:00 PM The Reading Circle will present a program detailing the contents of Mandt Lodge Library, an exciting summer challenge, and discussion of how the Reading Circle is organized. Mark your calendar for these events! Post Syttende Mai Party - Tuesday, May 22, 6:00 cocktails and eat at 7:00 PM. No need to bring anything but please RSVP to Darlene Arneson ([email protected] or call 873-7209) by Sunday, May 20. It's a great time to relax and socialize and review the previous weekend's activities! Movie Night - Monday, May 28 at 7 PM. If you're around Memorial Day evening, come to the lodge to enjoy pizza, bring a snack, your own beverages, and enjoy the movie "The Stavig Letters". For more than 50 years, two brothers, one who homesteaded in Dakota Territory and one who remained a fisherman in Norway, exchanged hundreds of letters. The Stavig Letters tells the story of immigration through historic photos and video from the fjords of Norway to the Dakota prairie. Thank you to Brian and Barb Ogne of Norseman of the Lakes lodge for loaning us the movie! Garage Sale - Mark your calendar for August 9-11 for our lodge's garage and bake sale. It's a great time to donate items to the lodge that you can't use anymore. Help will be needed in staffing the sale, bringing baked goods, and arranging all the items! Anyone can attend the District 5 Convention!

The District 5 Convention is June 20-24, 2012 in Appleton. Thank you to delegates Janis Wegner,Donna Maurer, and Bonnie Selje who will be Mandt Lodge's delegates to the District 5 Convention inAppleton. Darlene Arneson will be a delegate as a member of the District 5 Board. Alternates areScott Wegner, Gerald Erdahl and John Arneson. Please go to www.sonsofnorway5.com to see allthe activities, schedules, Cultural Fair information, bowling event, banquet, workshops and all theother ways that non-delegates can participate in the convention. Registration forms are now postedfor all areas!! If you want to stay at the hotel, be sure to ask for the Sons of Norway rate of $79 pernight. Please contact Darlene Arneson if you have any questions on any information related to theconvention. She can try to answer it or refer you to someone who can!

2014 District ConventionAs we have discussed at the last few meetings, three lodges (Norseman of the Lakes, Nordland andMandt) have submitted a bid to host the 2014 District 5 Convention . The proposed dates are June25-29, 2014 and we have chosen the Lake Lawn Resort, Delevan, as the hotel. The District Boardreviewed the bid, a site visit will be held, and then the delegates at the convention will act on a motionfor it. At this time, there aren't any other bids.

The initial site interviews were organized by Brian Ogne, Norseman of the Lakes. There was a tour ofthree hotels (Geneva Ridge Resort, Lake Lawn Resort, The Abbey Resort) on March 31 by the threelodge presidents and spouses (Brian and Barb Ogne, Bill and Jan Hendrickson, and John andDarlene Arneson). There was consensus of the group for Lake Lawn Resort.

The three presidents have discussed the bid process with their lodge members and officers. We haveagreed that if awarded the convention, we would organize a steering committee with the goals of:equal representation on the committees, equal sharing of work and responsibilities. And if thoseremain equal, division of the financial aspect (i.e. income) equally, one General Chairman would beidentified and each lodge would identify one person as the primary contact. We would meetimmediately to discuss where the funds would be held and generated from. An exciting time!!

This excellent & informative article was written by N. Dean Huseby.

It’s another great story about the resiliency and creativeness of the

Norwegian people!

The Legend of the Paper Clip

Legends are often based on an event that actually occurred, but after storytellers have retoldthe legend, including their own little twists and turns, the event is often very different from reality.Legends remind me of the party game called Telephone. Everyone forms a circle. The first personstarts by whispering a sentence to the next person who in turns passes it on, until it goes completelyaround the circle. The last person then tells what they heard and invariably it is totally different fromwhat the first person said. Legends are like this yet they can have powerful impact on one’s culture.

Every nation can take credit for some invention. Norwegians are no different and can claimtheir share. One such legend surrounds the invention of the under-appreciated paper clip.Norwegians claim that one of their own invented it and that became the rallying point for them duringone of history’s darkest moments.

Why would so many cultures want to take credit for the lowly paper clip? Yes, paper clips areimportant. Just compare it with the mighty staple which has no legend to go along with it. Anyonewho has removed staples prior to copying or scanning documents knows the value of the paper clip.Or how about the time you stabbed yourself with a staple, only then wishing you had used a paperclip? Only those with strong fingernails can successfully remove a staple. Paper clips are also easyto pick up off the carpet. Compare that with trying to pry a staple out of the fabric of carpet next to thecopy machine. Also, paper clips don’t mutilate the corner of your document like staples. I could goon for pages listing the benefits of the paper clip on society but that would not serve the purpose ofthis blog. But I can tell that you are now totally convinced of the paper clip’s achievements and why itdeserves a legend. The bottom line is that whoever invented the paper clip can stand up and take abow.

The legend began in 1901, when the Norwegian, Johann Vaaler, who had degrees inmathematics, electronics and science, patented his first paper clip in the United States. Unknown tohim, Samuel Fay (unfortunately I have to acknowledge that he was my wife’s distant cousin) hadalready patented the paper clip in 1867. So I was disillusioned to find out that Vaaler was not theinventor of the paper clip. Contrary to the legend, Vaaler’s clip had flaws and was nevermanufactured or marketed. Somehow the legend of Vaaler found its way as fact into dictionaries andencyclopedias and is still circulated in some circles.

But back to the purpose of this blog. During World War II, the lowly paper clip became asymbol of the Norwegians’ resistance to the tyranny imposed by Nazi Germany when they occupiedNorway for six long grueling years. The Norwegians were forbidden to fly their flag or where it ontheir lapel, so instead they wore a paper clip. Not only had a Norwegian supposedly invented it but itsignified that they were bound together. It took the Nazis a while to understand its meaning. In theend, the Nazis prohibited the wearing of the paper clip and those who resisted risked severepunishment.

So next time when you walk to the copy machine and notice staples and a paper clip on thefloor around you, leave the staple embedded in the carpet, but pick up the paper clip. You may evenwant to put it on your lapel. In doing so, you remember the courageous Norwegians as they took astand for freedom against Nazi oppression and oppression in general.
