Greetings families and friends of Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School!
We are officially heading into the second quarter of school and also cooler tem-
peratures! Please make sure your students are well equipped with warm clothing
for recess! We will go outside unless the temperature drops to below 0 degrees
with the wind chill.
Things around school are hopping! This week we will honor our veterans in a cer-emony on Wednesday, November 8th at 8:15am in the gymnasium. If you have a veteran that is able to attend the ceremony, please make sure you submit their name at the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/ydZqjAyTW6jQIuSH3 We also have cards in the office on which the students can write the name of a veteran (living or deceased), branch of service, and student’s name. Please make sure you child wears our nation’s colors of red, white, and blue! We would like to thank ALL of you who brought in main dishes, desserts, condi-
ments, and accessories for the staff during conferences! The food was delicious
and much appreciated as the staff put in long days.
Thank you to all who supported our Book Fair, which was another huge success!
The Scholastic points earned will put books in our classrooms as well as our li-
brary. Thank you to Gretchen Hedrick for organizing and to all the volunteers
served a shift or two!
We are so excited about the upcoming Great Gatherings event on Friday, Novem-
ber 17th. There will be so many wonderful gift packages available through the Si-
lent Auction and some very fun ‘gatherings’ for children and adults! It will be a
great way to meet other parents, visit with teachers and get to know the interns!
Please consider joining us that evening as it is sure to be a wonderful event.
A HUGE thank you to PASI for their $10,000 donation to our school library! Our
librarian, Jenni Egstad, works diligently to find authentic Spanish texts for our stu-
dents to read. This gift will definitely help her begin to fill up the shelves!
Thank you for all the many ways that you support our students, staff and school!

Student Engagement Through Coding
By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
In the world of education, a considerable amount of time is spent
implementing strategies to increase student engagement. While teaching the need-to-
know skills to be successful in reading, writing, and math, schools continue to be
challenged by the reality that today’s students need a bigger nudge to come to school
than just wanting to learn.
Today’s students are growing up with the expectations that schools and
learning will keep pace with the super-charged lives they have at home, guaranteed to
them by smart phones, 24-hour news and entertainment channels, and fast-food restaurants. Enter an
opportunity to implement computer science immersion in three Sioux Falls Elementary Schools.
This fall, the District launched the computer science immersion program at Hayward, Lowell,
and Anne Sullivan Elementary Schools. The computer programming curriculum is guided by California-
based Code to the Future who assigns a trainer to the schools, helping both teachers and students
embed computer coding into their math, reading, science and social studies classes. The theory is that
the critical thinking and collaboration that is required in today’s world can no longer be found on the
pages of an encyclopedia or dictionary.
Learning must be real-world, hands-on and immediate. Computer science immersion is proving
to be that and so much more. This month, we are inviting school and business leaders from around the
region to see the program in action. There is great interest. Local business partners and curious
computer-focused companies have an ongoing opportunity to participate in demonstrations of learning
hosted by Kindergarten through 5th graders who are already accomplishing the basic coding commands
key to the technology that makes our world work.
Code to the Future uses the phrase “Awesome is the New Normal” to generate excitement and
engagement. The high-level problem-solving skills students are learning through computer science
immersion are, indeed, awesome and one day perhaps this type of learning will be considered the new
“normal.” For now, it is a cutting-edge program that has students not wanting to even take a break to
use the restroom. Now, that is engagement!
On Wednesday, November 8, we will celebrate our United
States Veteran's and active military personnel that are part of the Sonia Sotomayor School community and family! We are so very grateful for
their service to our country and want to say Thank You!
Veteran's Day Celebration
Wednesday, November 8, 2017 8:15 am
Sonia Sotomayor Elementary Gymnasium
Click HERE to submit the name of any veterans who will attend our ceremony as our honored guests on November 8.
Also, we invite students to complete a certificate to recognize any family member or friend (still living or passed) to hang on our Wall of Honor for the month of November. The student will need to know the name of the military personnel and branch of service or deployment location.
Students can acquire a certificate in the office or from Mrs. Biggar, our school counselor.
Thank you for helping us thank our Veterans for their selfless service to our coun-try!
Music Notes
Aubreigh McCall and Rosi Szameit both performed with the 20th An-
niversary South Dakota Elementary Honor's Choir last Saturday, Oct.
28. The choir consisted of 175 students who were selected from all
over South Dakota. The students did a great job with singing a vari-
ety quality vocal literature of many styles (Renaissance, Hebrew,
Work Songs, and Scottish folk music in 2-3 parts).
The Honor's Choir concert will be aired on South
Dakota Public Broadcasting on Thanksgiving Day,
Nov. 23rd at 2:30 pm. Congratulations Aubreigh
and Rosi!!

Student Cold Weather Safety
How can Parents / Guardians Support
Student Safety in the winter?
Send students to school wearing snow
pants, boots, winter coat, and gloves or
mittens. Assume that your child will have
outdoor recess before school.
If your child often forgets his/her winter
gear, hang this reminder checklist below by
the door as a visual reminder.
Checklist:
▪ Hat
▪ Gloves/Mittens
▪ Snow Pants
▪ Coat
▪ Boots / Tennis shoes
What the School Does to Determine Indoor/Outdoor
Recess Before and During the School Day:
Recess decisions before and during the school day are
based on temperatures being monitored at
www.weather.gov using zip code 57105.
Students are indoors if the wind chill or air temperature is
below 0° F.
Students are outdoors if the wind chill or air temperatures
are 0° F or above 0° F.
Recess supervisors report ice and unsafe conditions to the
office.

School Related Cancellations and Postponements It is important to be prepared for the winter storms and extreme cold that every South Dakota winter brings. Please read the following information so you are aware of the procedures for school related cancellations and postponements. District leaders rely on experts from the National Weather Service and city/county officials when we make decisions on school cancellations, late starts or early dismissals. Cancelling School/Late Start When a severe storm hits the area, or is forecast, we start contacting local officials as early as 3:00 a.m. We communicate with our Operational Services Department, the Weather Bureau, the City Street Department, Sioux Falls Transit, and our transportation contractors. It is our goal to decide whether or not to cancel school by 5 a.m. to allow time for parking lots and sidewalks to be cleared, food services to prepare meals and the bus company to begin operations. In the event that school needs to be cancelled or delayed, families will be alerted via a ParentLink phone call. These calls will generally be sent between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to accommodate families whose children are picked up by buses at 6:45 a.m. Announcements are also made on the District’s website, the app and over the local radio and television stations. Because the public schools have a limited rural area, it is often possible for Sioux Falls to have school when nearby towns may not. Early Dismissal Storms occasionally move in during the day, making it necessary to assess whether or not to dismiss school early. We choose early dismissal only under the most extreme circumstances. In most cases, it is safer for students to remain at school due to the need for transportation and proper supervision. In the rare instances when schools are dismissed early, families will receive a ParentLink phone call and the information will appear on the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us. Announcements are also made over the local radio and television stations. Notifications refer to dismissal “one hour early” or “two hours early” because of the number of different building schedules. In addition to noting the early dismissal, announcements about evening activities are normally included.
It is very important that every family has a plan for early dismissal. Be sure your student knows where to go in case no one is at home. Parents/Guardians are urged to talk with their student about his/her safety during winter weather emergencies. Be Safe This Winter The school system offers these suggestions concerning cold weather and emergency situations: 1. Listen for a ParentLink phone call regarding school closings, late starts, or early dismissals. Check the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us for updated information. Announcements will also be made on local radio and television stations. (Please avoid calling schools or the Instructional Planning Center. Phone lines are needed for emergency communications.)

Coming Soon to a Library Near You...
In November, Principal Sra. Vik and Librarian Mrs. Egstad will be going to Mexico on a book shopping trip with the goal of bringing back great new titles for the Sonia Sotomayor Library. They have been busy looking at what reading levels have the greatest needs and also which genres they would like to grow the inventory of. They will take this information with them as they visit book warehouses and select books for the school library.
PASI is proud to support this effort by donating $10,000 in funds to be used for the purpose of growing the elementary library. The PASI Board has been good stewards of the donations that have been given over the past few years and is excited that your donations are able to help the elementary school students to have engaging and authentic Spanish literature available to them.
It will take some time and effort to get these books ready for students to checkout, but be watching for these new additions to the library during second semester!
