P R O G R A M N O T E SSorida! We welcome you in the spirit of our Zimbabwe brothers and sisters! Today’s concert reflects the heritage of faith and community of the Friends University Singing Quakers. Last year the world stopped as we all tried to navigate uncharted waters. This pandemic has challenged us spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. Yet through it all, we are still here. This concert is designed to give hope and to encourage your heart and soul. Be not afraid during times of uncertainty; believe in God “even when He is silent.” Be not afraid of one another, but let us walk together in peace for “equality is in the air we breathe.”

“I hear America singing” and it is a song of love, for “where charity and love are, God is there” (Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est). Following a long tradition of the Singing Quakers, the concert closes with the familiar hymn, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” in which the singer responds personally to the gift of divine love, which “demands my soul, my life, my all.” May you leave this concert knowing that we need each other, you are not alone, and we are in this together.

My Spirit is Uncaged Jubilant. O to make the most. Jubilant! O to make the most, Jubilant song. Full of manhood. Womanhood. Infancy. Jubilant! Full of common employments. Jubilant! Full of grain and trees. Jubilant! Jubilant song! O the joy of my spirit. It is uncaged, it darts like lightning! It is not enough to have this globe. Or a certain time. I will have thousands, thousands, thousands, I will have thousands of globes! And all times. Jubilant! O to make the most. Jubilant song. One self I sing, a simple separate person. I celebrate myself and sing myself. A song of rolling earth, of rolling earth and of words according. I sing the body electric, I sing the song of companionship.Come, said the Muse. Sing me a song no poet yet has chanted. Sing me! Sing me the universal. Oh the joy of my spirit. It is uncaged, it darts like lightning. It is not enough to have this globe. Or a certain time. I will have thousands, thousands, thousands. I will have thousands of globes, and all times. Jubilant, o to make the most. Jubilant! O to make a most, Jubilant song.

Be Not Afraid Be not afraid, I am with thee. Tremble not for I am thy God. I strengthen thee for I am thy help.I uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Tremble not for I am thy God. Tremble not for I am your God. I strengthen thee for I am thy help. I uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. By redemption thou art saved, you are mine. Fear not, fear not. Fear not for you are called and named. Fear not, fear not, you are mine.

Signs of the Judgment Judgment oh Judgement. Judgement, judgament's-a-coming. I see the signs of the jud-a-ment coming oh, I see the sign of the Judgament coming. Hallelujah. See signs of the judgment oh, see the Judgament oh Lord, time is drawing nigh. Better be ready for that great day when the Lord comes to take his children away. Boatman, boatman row one side, you can’t get to heaven against the wind and the tide. Run to the mountain, the mountain moved, I run to the hills and they did too.Went to the rocks to hide my face. The rocks cried out there’s no hiding place. One of these mornings bright and fair I will meet my Jesus in the air. He’ll say, “well done my child” then I’ll shout Hallelujah race been won. See the signs of the Judement, See the signs of the judement the time is drawing nigh. Judgment oh Judgement. Judgement, judgament's-a-coming. I see the signs of the jud-a-ment coming oh, I see the sign of the Judgament coming. Hallelujah. Gotta be, ready, gotta be ready, gotta be, ready hallelujah. Better be ready for that great day when the Lord comes to take his children away. Judgement Lord. Judgements coming. Coming Lord.

Equality is in the Air We BreatheEquality is in the air we breathe. My brother and sister walk this earth with me, in dignity. Our land must be the land where every man and women is free. Let American be the dream it used to be. In the air we breathe… On the earth we walk…Through the lives we lead…EQUALITY. Let American be American again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer of the plain. Seeing a home where he himself is free. Equality is in the air we breathe.

Let American be the dream the dreamers dreamed. Let it be that great strong land of love. Where never kings connive nor tyrants schemeThat any man be crushed by one above.

O, let my land be a land where LibertyIs crowned with no false patriotic wreathBut opportunity is real and life is free Equality is in the air we breathe.

Say who are you that mumbles in the dark? And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the people, humble, hungry, mean-Hungry yet today despite the dream. Beaten yet today- O, Pioneers!

I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream. In the Old World while still a serf of kings. Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true, That even yet its mighty daring sings.

In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned. That’s made America the land it has become. I came To build a “homeland of the free”.

O let American be America again- The land that never has been yet- And yet must be- the land where every man is free.

Equality Is In the Air We Breathe Continued...

O, yes, I say it plain, I swear this oath- America will be!

We, the people, must redeem The land, the minds, the plants, the rivers, The mountains and the endless plain- All, all the stretch of these great green states- And make America again!

I Hear America SingingI hear American singing of its greatness. I hear America singing strong. I hear America singing of its beauty. I hear America singing today. Oh walk together children, don’t you get weary. Talk together children don’t you get weary. There’s a great camp meeting in the Promised Land. Sing together children don’t you get weary. Shout together children don’t you get weary. There’s a great camp meeting in the Promised Land. We’re going to sing of truth and love. Walk together hand in hand together in peace. We’re going to sing, and never tire. There’s a great camp meeting. American singing. Great camp meeting in the Promised Land.

In Meeting We Are Blessed We are met together and in meeting we are blessed. Peace in coming and in going, peace in labor and in rest. Hold on, dear brother! Hold on, dear sister! Hold on! Hold on to me. We are met together and in meeting we are blessed. Peace in coming and in going, peace in labor and in rest. You’re not alone and you never more will be. I will be with you and I will carry you with me. Friendship endures, endures and surely we will prove it’s not ourselves, but our bodies that moved. We are met together and in meeting we are blessed. Peace in coming and in going, peace in labor and in rest. Hold on, dear brother! Hold on, dear sister! Hold on! Hold on to me.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous crossOn which the Prince of glory died,My richest gain I count but loss,And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,Save in the death of Christ my God!All the vain things that charm me most,I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,Sorrow and love flow mingled down!Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,That were a present far too small;Love so amazing, so divine,Demands my soul, my life, my all.
