These 200 MIDI files are of songs and tunes mostly written in the 1920s through to the early 1940s. This was a time
when the term ‘jazz’ or ‘jass’ was popular, although it seemed to apply to any music that had an up-tempo beat and a
clever arrangement. It is the arrangements that often capture the listener’s attention, as many of the tunes are now
forgotten. In many cases there are three or four hands, sometimes six hands creating the music. Compared to popular
music of today, these arrangements are slick, musically innovative and clever, with a wide range of tonal colour by way
of interesting chord sequences and colourful key changes. Songs are mostly up-tempo, even though today we know
some of them as ballads. Included are several classical works made into arrangements for dancing.
Composers include Irving Berlin, Nacio Herb Brown, Walter Donaldson, George Gershwin, Ray Henderson, Jerome
Kern, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Harry Warren and Vincent Youmans.
Pianists include Pauline Alpert (who was asked to tone down her style in case people thought her roll recordings were
edited), Victor Arden (also with Carroll), Adam Carroll, Herbert Clair, Zez Confrey, George Gershwin, Frank Milne
(who recorded extensively during the 1930s and 40s), Phil Ohman, and the inimitable Original Piano Trio.
A few highlights
• Am I Blue by Harry Akst, played by Victor Arden and Adam Carroll
• Carioca from “Flying Down To Rio’, written by Vincent Youmans, played by Ohman and Arden
• Continental, The, written by Con Conrad, played by Victor Arden and Adam Carroll
• Eskimo Shivers, written and played by Billy Mayerl (his only reproducing piano roll recording)
• Home in Pasadena, written by Harry Warren in 1924, played by Frank Milne (four hands)
• I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise, written by George Gershwin, played by the Original Piano Trio
• Lambeth Walk, written by Noel Gay in 1939, played by Frank Milne (four hands)
• Nola, written and played by Felix Arndt, issued in 1915
• So Am I from “Lady Be Good” written and played by George Gershwin
• Why? from “Sons O’ Guns”, by Davis, Coots & Swanstrom, played by Frank Milne.
Background stories
1. The Original Piano Trio (Edgar Fairchild, Herbert Clair & George Dilworth) made 24 Ampico roll recordings
around 1922. The trio gave many live performances and were sometimes a headline act at the Eastman Theatre.
2. Alan Moran is described in Aeolian roll catalogues “as the pianist in the orchestra of the United States Steamship
Leviathan.” Built in Germany in 1913, the ship was seized during World War 1 by the US Shipping Board in 1917,
becoming a troop carrier and later a passenger liner.
3. Harry Perrella (1900-1939) was a pianist with the Paul Whiteman orchestra, and specialised in playing music by
Gershwin. He recorded for Victor in 1928, as a solo pianist and with the Whiteman orchestra.
4. Zez Confrey (1895-1971) came to fame with his Kitten on the Keys at the now famous 1924 Paul Whiteman
concert that introduced Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. He did not record the work (played here by Herbert Clair),
but he did record his equally famous Dizzy Fingers.
