2 Categorized SonarWiz Enhancements – 2016 Q4

Here are the highlights of SonarWiz enhancements for 2016 Q4 (October, November, December, 2016).

Highlights Summary Table (blue items have companion graphics) Section - Functional Category Highlight Description

2.1 General Improvements Our most significant feature change overall, was the addition of the histogram-control to our COLOR WINDOW, for scaling color-palette to data range. This makes color-mapping of sidescan, bathymetry, backscatter, sub-bottom, and grid data easier to manage. (DYK video available)

2.2 Bathymetry post-processing 1. Bathymetry backscatter data is now imported in higher-precision 16-bit floating-point format, and may be displayed, and have EGN applied, in native units (dB).

2. Gridding just got easier in SonarWiz. Almost any

native grid format file may be imported now into SonarWiz, and gets converted and saved within the project as a Surfer6 format grid.

2.3 Sidescan post-processing 1. The sidescan processing now includes a new Nadir filter for smoothing the transition across the nadir, making mosaic view of data sets more visually homogenous than ever (DYK video available)

2. Bulk contact capture from named XY data sets, or from in-project point features, is an exciting new option. This supports batch import of previous contact capture work from other software, saving you re-work time.

2.4 Sub-bottom post-processing 1. The new on-the-fly SB digitzer view option allows you to more quickly scan much larger SB data files (no pre-built static image is captured)

2. SB data is now imported in high-precision 16-bit

floating point and stored in a new database format, making import gain management simpler, and data display easier.

2.5 Real-time data acquisition The Sonar configuration button on the data acquisition panel now prescans the servers folder each time it is launched, so that servers that were installed while SonarWiz was running, will be discovered when the dialog is opened.

2.1 General Improvement - COLOR WINDOW - with HISTOGRAM control

The new COLOR WINDOW with HISTOGRAM view and control, are the most dramatic GUI enhancements ever added to SonarWiz. To use this tool, select View -> Post-processing Views -> Map Toolbar, then dock the COLOR WINDOW to the left of your MAP VIEW.

Usage Notes:

You select the (1) DATA TYPE to show, and the (2) data values HISTOGRAM of the selected display item (a bathymetry grid, in this case) are scaled to the (3) COLOR PALETTE you choose, by selecting (4) SCALE TO DATA. Then adjust it as you like! The COLOR WINDOW can help you SS, SB, bathy, backscatter or mag data to a diverse set of color palettes

This COLOR WINDOW now replaces previous top-menu-area GUI controls for color mapping, with which users were familiar - like the hue, brightness, and color compression side-bars.

Please see this new "Did You Know?" tutorial video, which explains color window histogram use, in the first topic presented:

2.2 Bathymetry Post-Processing - New Universal Recipient ADD GRID Function

ADD GRID now accepts almost any grid, then saves it into the SonarWiz project in Surfer6 format.

While grids have been routinely used in bathymetry post-processing, SonarWiz users are increasingly using grid data in sidescan and sub-bottom projects, and this new grid import capability helps. The ADD GRID function, accessed from the Project Explorer, can import many different formats of grid data. SonarWiz converts the imported grid to a GRD/PRJ file pair, in Surfer6 grid format, and names it accordingly: (e.g. BathyGrid_1m becomes BathyGrid_1m-S6), saving it inside your project GRIDS folder, for fast access:

Note the S6 suffix added within the file name.

Grids are useful as bathymetry surfaces for datum alignment of sub-bottom data, alternate views of your own bathymetry, sidescan, sub-bottom, backscatter or magnetometry results, or as surfaces on which to drape sidescan or backscatter amplitude data. They are very interesting to import and view int he CTI3DViewer too.

2.3 Sidescan Post-Processing - New Nadir Filter

SonarWiz Sidescan Nadir Filter - Making Mosaics More Seamless

Our new nadir filter is digital filter magic, helping you overcome a design limitation in sidescan survey - the dark strips of blurred view of poor data near nadir, directly beneath your towfish.

SonarWiz programmers use existing across-track data, borrowing heuristic value from AGC filter design, to add a per-ping digital weave across your sidescan nadir, barely distinguishable from the real data. The high-contrast dark nadir strips are less obvious (nadir be gone!)

You control the nadir angle width , which is the top-down view angle width of real data, used to create the revised nadir view.

The new nadir filter is also described at 1 min 15 secs into this brief "Did You Know?" tutorial video, narrated by Chesapeake Technology's chief scientist, Dr. David Finlayson:

2.4 Sub-bottom Post-Processing - New On-the-fly Digital Window

Try out our new on-the-fly (dynamically generated image) digital waterfall view of your sub-bottom data, and you may never go back to the static-image view design:

You can select this in any SonarWiz sub-bottom project, then enjoy the quicker access, and side-to-side scrolling, of the Bottom-track / Digitizer View of your SB data:

The on-the-fly view design benefits are most obvious with larger SB files sizes, since larger files has been slower to load and view, with earlier static-imaging viewer design.
