sold the farm and bought a volunteer fire house to remodelin the style of Versailles. Vivienne took the letters from herAmerican pen-pal, George, and tracked him down via returnaddress. Their first night together was their first nighttogether and they were never again not. The pages turnedwithout my knowing. This book burned our candles. Youmight know her by her smile.

Dear spirit in the sky, believed in by so many,We asked you for water and you sent it to our plants in theform of rain and snow. We took it to our homes in pipes andpitchers and used it to fill our swimming pools. You helpedus invent fine plastics and we made it into bottles so wecould take the water everywhere we went. But now youvemade the river crest beyond the sand bags, and ourdriveways have turned into tributaries, and now we ask youto take the water back. It has drowned our children and ournew SUVs. We just put in a swing-set and it has floated
