How Does It Work? There are two different models of the SOLO tool, the SOLO 1900 and the SOLO 2. Each tool is capable of reaching counterbore sizes two times the bore diameter minus 1mm. Possible applications up to 30mm through hole. (Max ratio = Ødx2 - 1mm).

The SOLO 1900 uses two centrifugal weights installed in a sealed tool head. With an activation speed rate of 1900 rpm, the weights start moving outwards and turn the gearwheel. The gearwheel drives the blade out by rotating the blade control. When the spindle is stopped, a pull back spring pushes the centrifugal weights back to the center and retracts the blades.

The SOLO 2 uses similar parts, but works in the opposite way. With an activation speed rate of 2000 rpm or higher, the blades retract when the centrifugal weights move. When the spindle rotation is below 1500 RPM, the weights are pushed back to the center and the blade is fixed in the cutting position. Optional: SOLO S2, a larger SOLO head (blue ring) may be used for bores larger than approximately 22mm, contact HEULE.

How to Order:HEULE’s SOLO back counterboring tool consists of two major components:

1. Standard TOOL HEAD with integral shank 2. Custom Components, Cutting BLADE (or Cartridge with indexable insert), HOUSING, and CONTROL.

1) TOOL HEAD - This tool head is of standard design and is the base element for all applications with bore diameters 8 to 30mm.2) Special Components - Housing pilots, control mechanism and cutting blades are optimized per the desired back bore application and are Design & Build items to suit the needs of our customers. HEULE will always manufacture the strongest tool possible and stand behind the quality of our product. Simply submit the SOLO DATA SHEET (pg 238) with your application information for our engineering team to review. With each order, approval prints will be supplied to the end user within one week of order.

SOLO Introduction

SOLO Tooling Multi-OperationsThe SOLO Tooling system is completely customizable and can be engineered to create multiple features in one tool. Options include indexable inserts, form countersinks and more. All tooling has the capability of through spindle coolant (up to 30 BAR). The coolant holes come from the center of the shank and are diverted through the outer jacket back through the housing to the blade window. For extreme ratios or small housing diameters (typically below 10mm) through coolant to the housing, not the blade is possible. Other options include integral shanks, extra long reach and cartridge style (above hole Ø22mm).

SOLO 1900 (Black Ring) Programming InformationAttention: Pay attention to the speed rate of your tool head. The blade will move out sooner than the tool rated but cutting should only be made at or above the rated speed.

1. With no spindle rotation, pass through the workpiece (blade is retracted) EV = Fwd Feed.

2. Activate spindle in normal clockwise rotation (blade will extend within rated head speed. (BLACK=1900 RPM)

3. Dwell a minimum 1 second to allow insert to fully extend.

4. Turn coolant on.

5. Back feed and machine your workpiece. AR = Working Feed

6. Travel out of work piece. EV = Forward Feed.

7. Turn coolant off.

8. Spindle Stop, speed rate: 0 (blade will retract).

9. Dwell minimum of 1-2 seconds.

10. With stopped spindle, retract the tool from the workpiece (blade is retracted: speed rate is 0). ER = Rapid Back Feed.

IMPORTANT: Do not run dry! Coolant supply to the blade must be adequate. Do not exceed 3000 RPM or with unstable, unbalanced tool holder.

SpeedSurface footage are recommendations

only; Remember you must run the minimum of your rate Tool Head

(reduce for interrupted cuts).

SOLO 2 (Green Ring) Programming InformationAttention: The SOLO 2 works opposite of the SOLO 1900. The cutting blade is always active until the spindle reaches 2000 RPM. Please remain under 1500 RPM (Green Ring) when cutting.

1. With 2000 RPM spindle rotation, pass through the workpiece (blade is retracted). EV = Forward Feed. (Dwell if necessary).

2. Slow spindle down to 200 RPM or stop spindle (blade will extend).

3. Dwell a minimum of 1 second to allow insert to fully extend.

4. Activate spindle to working speed in normal clockwise rotation (max 1500RPM).

5. Turn coolant on.

6. Back Feed and machine your workpiece. AR = Working Feed.

7. Travel out of workpiece. EV = Forward Feed.

8. Turn coolant off.

9. Increase spindle speed >2000 RPM, speed ratio: min 2000 RPM (blade will retract). Note: Countersinks above 30mm, min 2400 RPM

10. Dwell minimum 1-2 seconds.

11. With spindle rotating at 2000 RPM retract the tool from the work piece (blade is retracted; speed rate is min 2000). ER = Rapid Back Feed.

IMPORTANT: Do not run dry! Coolant supply to the blade must be adequate. Do not exceed 3000 RPM or with unstable, unbalanced tool holder.

Dismantling of blade:By pressing the compression buttons at the tool head, the blade control with the blade control pin are pulled back. The blade is released and can be pushed out. Keep the compression buttons pressed until the blade is completely removed.

Insertion of blade: By pressing the compression buttons at the side of the tool head the blade control with blade control pin are pulled back. Keep the compression buttons pressed until the blade is inserted. Insert blade flush with blade window (Black Ring) or insert blade in the blade window in the cutting position (Green Ring). Compression buttons can be released. The control pin must line up with the slot of the cutting blade.

Changing the Blades (Black & Green Rings)

Dismantling Housing and ControlLoosen the 3 clamping screws at the tool head with M3 Hex wrench. Pull the blade housing forward, away from the tool head using the smaller end of the SOLO Disassembly KEY. Then pull blade control forwards away from the tool head. DO NOT TWIST or use Vise Grips that would bend or damage Control.

Assembly:Assemble the blade control by lining up alignment marks (X), press control with slight force into the tool head until the control engages.

Mount blade housing (do not tighten screws) on the tool head making sure the position pin is over the clearance slot and perform a tool function blade check.

Check: To CHECK the tool function (extension and retraction of the blade) insert the SOLO key (order number GH-B-X-0103) and turn (Black Ring - Clockwise / Green Ring Counterclockwise). The blade should move in & out. After the blade function test, re-position the housing until the position pin hits the end stop. The housing position mark must line up with the notch mark on the tool head.

Then line up the position notch, tighten clamping screws (Pos. 5) firmly using M3 hex wrench.

Attention: All turns with the SOLO key must be done slowly by hand to detect any interference with the blade. DO NOT USE FORCE.

*If using SOLO S2, order number for SOLO key is GH-X-B-0105
