Tech Spotlight: Automotive Start Your Engines!!!! The Automotive Service Technology class

has really welcomed new auto instructor, Justin Rowlands. Mr.

Rowlands has demonstrated his passion for working with his

students and learning to

deliver instruction in new and

exciting ways. The shop had

plenty of visitors this week as

all of the 8th graders from

Dundalk and Holabird Middle

Schools came over to tour the

Sollers/Dundalk complex.

The students in the level

one auto program are busy

conducting labs testing the

viscosity of different types

of oil in preparation to

learn how to perform oil

changes. The level two

students are learning to

conduct compression and

cylinder leak-down tests to learn components of diagnostic work.

Way to go automotive! Keep up the good work!

Sollers Point Technical High School’s 3rd Annual Mentor Kick-Off Event was held on September 24th, 2015 in the Sollers Point Café. Mr. Weglein, our school principal, introduced the program and shared how students were chosen for the program. This year, 25 students will be participating in the program this year. Culinary students created a wonderful breakfast and lunch for the students to enjoy.

Mrs. Kongkraphun, school counselor and coordinator for the program taught a lesson on executing S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Students completed a study skills needs assessment that was used to help them identify areas of focus. Students also reviewed how to create S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Then, new strategies for how to execute their goals were taught. New S.M.A.R.T. Goals were created for quarter one. Results of the needs assessments were used to assist students in identifying strategies to use for meeting their new updated S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Copies of the work they completed will be provided to their mentors at our next faculty meeting.

Our first of eight monthly mentor meetings will take place on October 22nd in the computer lab on the 3rd floor. Passes will be provided for the students involved. We are looking forward to an exciting and successful year!

The PSAT and SAT will be administered at all Home Schools:

PSAT Test Administration: Wednesday October 14th 2015 All 9th, 10th and 11th graders

SAT Administration: SAT Day April 12, 2016 All Grade 11 students

Reasons to Take the PSAT:

The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also known as the PSAT, is a great way to prepare for the SAT’s. The questions are almost identical and some questions are the same. There are no consequences for taking the PSAT if you do not do well on it. The results will not show up on your high school transcripts and colleges do not require the scores for admission. There are no penalties for taking the PSAT, only benefits. Over 3.5 million students take the PSAT. There are a small few percentage of test takers who will be honored as National Merit Semifinalists. Those students can earn a $2500 scholarship from the National Merit Cor-poration. If you are one of the lucky ones who qualify for this schol-arship, you will receive many offers for scholarship opportunities from colleges. Article Title: Why we Love the PSAT (and you should too!) According to CollegeBoard, applying to four or more colleges is

recommended. “Why should students apply to four or more

colleges?” “Studies show that students who apply to two

colleges, rather than just one, are 40% more likely to enroll in

college, and applying to four colleges increases the likelihood

that the college they choose will be a good fit for them –

academically, socially, and financially.”

Seniors…Make it a goal to apply to at least four colleges! Your chances of finding the right school for you will increase! Quote cited from: www.CollegeBoard.org

Staying Healthy During Flu Season

As the season is changing often brings students with common cold symptoms. Common cold symptoms include runny nose, sore throat, watery eyes that go away in a week. However, some signs that may warn parents that their child may require staying home include vomiting, diarrhea, a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more, and a cold that lasts more than a week. Pneumonia is a possible complication of the flu, and asthma at-tacks and sinus and ear infections may get worse during flu. Wash your hands in warm water thoroughly for 20 seconds to prevent acquiring and spreading germs! Hum the "Happy Birth-day" song from beginning to end twice.

When to wash your hands:

-Before, during, and after preparing food

-Before eating food

-Before and after caring for someone who is sick

-Before and after treating a cut or wound

-After using the toilet

-After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet

-After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

-After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste

-After handling pet food or pet treats

-After touching garbage

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The month of October is designated as breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer typically develops in the milk ducts or glands of breast tissues and can occur in both females AND males. Breast cancer first forms as a small lump and can grow to metastasize to other tissues. Breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women. Fortunately, this disease can be treated upon early detection. Remember to do a monthly self-check on your breasts the same time every month.

Signs and symptoms that should not be ignored: indentation of breast, swelling in armpit, lump in breast, or change in color or texture of breast. Other signs include nipple dimpling, itching, burning, or ulceration.
