This year the focus is apply shop tasks to industry certifications. Students are able to learn a skill by doing theory work on systems and then applying thes theory to hands-on dismantling and repairing these systems. This leads to general and advanced diagnostics of systems. Level 1 students began by learning tool names, how to repair broken fasten- ers, basic internal combustion engine principles, oil change service, basic electrical service and diagnostic, brake systems repair and diagnostics. Level 2 students are learning advanced tire/wheel repair in addition to the repair and diagnostics of ignition systems, they learn fuel emissions, ex- haust, steering and suspension systems, as well as advanced engine diag- nostics in relation to engine performance. Students will also teardown and re -build an engine. All students this year will be taking their ASE (Automotive Service Excel- lence) exams in addition to five SP-2 exams. Students in both levels will cre- ate a career portfolio consisting of a cover letter, resume’, job references, and a compilation of all of their certifications. The portfolio will help assist the students when they are getting jobs their senior year. 1901 Delvale Avenue Dundalk , MD 21222 February 2018 443-809-7075 Email: hp://sollerspoinths.bcps.org Twitter: @sollerspt Sollers Point Technical High School

Sollers Point Staff: - If you have students that have flu/cold like symptoms please send them to the health suite.

Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

***WASH YOUR HANDS***

Alert: During the week ending January 13, 2018 (MMWR Week 2), influenza-like illness (ILI) intensity was HIGH and there was WIDESPREAD geographic activity of influenza in Maryland.

The Flu Is Contagious - Most healthy adults may be able to infect other people beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Symptoms start 1 to 4 days after the virus enters the body. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Some people can be infected with the flu virus but have no symptoms. During this time, those persons may still spread the virus to others. (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm)

How can you tell the difference between a common cold versus the seasonal flu?

http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/docs/dph/cdc/flu/cold-flu-comparison.pdf

The flu is spread by droplets and can spread from people up to 3-6 feet away – i.e. flu cough, sneeze or talking. You might be able to get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the flu virus on it and then touching your own mouth or nose.

How to avoid:

Avoid people that are sick or have the flu.

Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

WITH A COLD

Symptoms are usually less severe than flu symptoms

Symptoms develop gradually over a few days.

You rarely have a fever.

You feel sick mostly in your head and nose.

Body aches, headaches and pain are usually mild if you have them.

You may or may not feel tired and weak

There is no vaccine to protect you.

Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infec-tions, or hospitalizations.

WITH THE FLU:

Symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms

Symptoms come on quickly and severely.

You almost always have a fever

Your entire body feels sick

Body aches, headaches and pain are com-mon and can be severe.

Tiredness and weakness are common.

You can get vaccine to protect yourself!

The flu can result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations
