At 33, Ryan Korban creates interiors that convey Generation Y’s vision of luxury. His forthcoming projects—like NoHo’s 40 Bleeker, opening early this year—epitomize the cool, informal feel of his work for high-profile clients including Alexander Wang and Kanye West. He’s long been into put-ting on a show: Korban originally moved to New York to pursue acting, but fell in love with set design instead. We asked the Philadelphia native to design a room around Studio 65’s 1970 Bocca sofa. Korban’s refer-ences, from a George Condo painting to sumptuous materials, showcase his knack for balancing timeless sophistication with a contemporary more-is-more ethos.
Interior designer Ryan Korban designs a room around the iconic Bocca sofa using his seductive, anything-goes approach.
AS TOLD TO TIFFANY JOW
01 BOCCA SOFA, GUFRAM
“I’ve always loved this sofa. It’s all about
the silhouette. And I liked the challenge
of finding a way to tone this piece down,
and create a space that feels edited,
rather than eccentric. I don’t ever want to
be too intelligent, too serious, or
too about one period in my work. I find
that exhausting.”
02 “PILAZZO PITTI, SALA BIANCA, FIRENZE”
(2008), MASSIMO LISTRI
“I’m in love with Massimo’s photography.
He prints his images very large, so
they literally take over a space.
Even though it’s such a different
style from the sofa, it creates an
underlying playful, romantic vibe.”
03 MARIA PERGAY (PICTURED WITH PIERRE
CARDIN, IN 1977)
“This entire room reminds me of the work
she made, in which art and sculpture were
blended with furniture. She was really
ahead of her time.”
04 ROCK CRYSTAL QUARTZ SIDE TABLES,
JEAN PATRICK GUILBERT
“I thought these could be gathered next
to the sofa. They would work with it since
they’re more a piece of sculpture than a
traditional end table.”
05 CARROUSEL CANDLESTICKS, L’OBJET
“I wanted to have something to go
alongside the Georg Jensen bowl,
which felt kind of lonely, so I added these.
They’re simple and understated.”
06 KARAKORUM IVORY FABRIC, DEDAR
“This bouclé wool is the complete opposite
of the sofa’s shocking red hue. I don’t use
this color much, but I like the idea of adding
texture to this room. It’s a way of making it
more abstract.”
07 CLARIDGE’S HOTEL
“This London hotel was designed by Basil
Ionides, who’s one of my favorites, and
Oswald Milne. It’s a bit art deco, a period
of architecture I find so inspiring.”

08 “CAPTAIN’S MIRROR, BDDW
“This space needed something round,
curvy, and made of leather—another
different material. Here’s a fitting solution.”
09 “THE DISCARDED HUMAN” (2013),
GEORGE CONDO
“George Condo is my favorite artist, and
this piece adds a new component to this
space. I love the weird dichotomy of mixing
the worlds of fantasy and romance—it
doesn’t always have to be pretty.”
10 BLOCK TRIPLE WALL SCONCE,
EDITION MODERN
“These feel right because they’re so
angular and totally different in tone. The
shades are made of alabaster, adding to
the texture that’s already in the room.”
11 BOWL 1068, GEORG JENSEN
“I don’t like the idea of ‘decorating,’ even
though that’s what I do. This room is really
true to the way I work: it feels personalized
rather than decorated. I imagined that its
owner had been collecting these art
objects over time, and was finally putting
them all together. This bowl, designed by
Henning Koppel in 1958, has the same spirit
as the sofa, but it’s from a totally different
time period.”
12 FLOOR LAMP, LASZLO KATONA
“This sixties wrought-iron floor lamp feels
very twenties—like, glam. I wanted a lighting
fixture without a lampshade for this room.
The sofa is so much, so it needs something
sculptural that is an object unto its self.”
13 CHAUFFEUSE OSSELET, ERIC
SCHMITT STUDIO
“I love that this is made of bronze and
has a hand-crafted feel. Eric’s work is
amazing. To create a real seating area here,
you need a piece that’s petite, with low
proportions.”
