Quantum enables intra- and inter-facility communication between twoor more Quantum System Processor Cards (QSPC1). With IP-basedcommunication software, Quantum provides simple and securevirtual networking, simplifying both routine and non-routine schedulingand administrative functions.

Each facility can consist of one primary, one secondary and up to 73normal systems or nodes (75 total). The primary identifies the QSPC1that acts as the access point for all programming changes. Thesecondary acts as backup to the primary, assuming the role of theprogramming interface if the original primary is out of service, with theremaining QSPC1 cards designated as normal systems.

Quantum also identifies each system with a node number. The primarysystem is one (1), the secondary is two (2), and each normal QSPC1 willfollow in order of creation. A node identifies one QSPC1 processorboard. The board can be installed in a max. 240-station rack, max.120-station rack or wall mount, or max. 48-station compact rack system.

2.1 Instal l ing the Pr imar y Processor Card

The primary processor card contains the microprocessor, Network Interface with 12 DSP channels[8 voice channels and 4 channels for tone generation] memory, system clock, and widebandchannel for audio distribution. The system requires at least one processor card regardless ofsystem capacity. The primary processor card is installed in the first position of the card frame.

Contact the Network Engineer or Network Integrator for Quantum Multicast IPaddresses. If multicast is undefined or is being deployed in a dedicatednetwork, the best practice for private network multicast addressing is to use the239.0.0.0/8 scope. Additionally, multicast best practices recommend avoiding239.0.0.x, 239.0.1.x, and 239.128.1.x address scopes.

Different from the Multicast IP address defined above, the InterFacility MulticastIP address is used for inter-facility all-call paging (see section 4.6, Under-standing Neighbor Lists). Unique facilities use a common Multicast IP addressto enable inter-facility communications.

VoIPAll QSPC1 cards within a facility are connected via a single Local Area Network (LAN), and voice callswithin a QSPC1 are completed in standard analog fashion. To address and complete calls betweenQSPC1 cards, the Quantum processor card is equipped with a digital signal processor (DSP) specificallydesigned for VoIP. When an approved VoIP telephone connected directly to the network is used to initi-ate a call or page across multiple nodes, Quantum triggers a Voice over IP (VoIP) call across the LAN. TheVoIP phone must have a static IP address on the network similar to a node programmed through stationconfiguration (see section 5.2.1, Configuring Station Settings).

Quantum uses Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) for audio and TCP/IP for inter-QSPC1 communica-tion. VoIP works within a facility or between facilities when neighbor lists are configured. (See section4.6, Understanding Neighbor Lists for more detailed information.)

Virtual Private Networks When users require access to Quantum from outside the LAN, the network administrator can establishthis access using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). For successful remote access via a VPN, all nodesmust be on the network. See your network administrator for details.
