1. Left hand navigation inside the SOER section.

2. Free text search box: users can enter words to search the SOER content. With the advanced search, they will go to a faceted search interface (such as used here: http://www.eea.europa.eu/publications ).

3. Browse by topic or by country: users can choose from a predefined list of topics (the part B assessments) and countries (part C country pages). This will take them to the relevant assessment page or country page.

4. Multimedia: when clicking on this box a popup will open and play a video. If there are several videos available, they would be shown on the homepage alternatively, and the user can choose between them in the popup window (for an example see www.eea.europa.eu : click, in the spotlight, on the small icon with a play button.)

5. Tag cloud: all the content in the SOER section will be tagged with keywords, which will then automatically appear in this box. Each word is a link to a page with all the tagged content. The more items are tagged with a word, the bigger the word gets in the tag cloud.

6. Key messages: the key messages (overall messages if they exist, or key messages from the synthesis) will be shown there, a new message appearing every time the page is reloaded. The “more” link will take the user to more related content. The “all messages” link will lead to a list of all key messages.

7. Key fact: similar in its functionality to the key messages box, this box will show different key facts.

8. Synthesis report: this box will give a direct access to the synthesis report. A more user friendly label should be found for this box.

9. Forum: it was proposed to introduce a forum in the SOER section, to be used as a kind of FAQ section and at the same time allow two way communication with the users.

10. A free text area, where ad hoc content can be added.

About the SOER homepage:

The SOER homepage was though out in order to provide access to SOER content in several different ways. Users who know what they are looking for can use the search or browse directly to their target, by country or by topic. Users who do not have a specific target in mind are given a taste of what they will find, and led gradually from general level content into more scientific content.
