The jury in the case of theTerritory vs. Kco!;istico Tais, chartíO'l with the murder of ana;el Mexican woman in SanMarcial about three and a halfyears ano. returned a verdict ofacquittal Wednesday. It will beremembered that on the strengthof the testimony of David Cuel-la- r

at a former trial Tais wasconvicted of murder in the firstdecree and sentenced tobe hand-ed. Cuellar testified that he him-self committed the murder, butthat Tais stood over him with apistol and threatened to kill himif he did not do so. Cuellar wassentenced to serve ninety-nin- eyears in the penitentiary. Theattorneys for Tais were grantedan appeal to the supreme court, and that body remanded the casefor a new trial. At this secondtrial Cuellar was ajain producidas a witness and testified thatTais took no part in the crime, but was some distance awaywhen it was committed. Hesimply saved his own neck byimplicating- - Tais at the firsttrial. This and corroborativeevidence satisfied the jury of theinnocence of 1 ais, who had beenin the penitentiary for ovef threeyears awaiting the verdict thatset him free. THE NEWS FROM FAIRVIEW

Pretty June Wedding Among:the Frincipal Events Noted.

The Chieftain's Fairview cor-respondent sends the following:

    Fairview, N. M June 12, l'JON.Dear Chieftain:

Our June wedding was pulledolT on the tenth, the contractingparties being Michael L. Sulli-van and Miss Annie Crow. Theevent took place at the home ofthe bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs.Tom Crow. Miss Crow was sup-ported by Miss Anice Kline, while Mr. Sullivan found a tow-er of strength in the bride'sbrother, William G. Crow. Allthe little Crows were perchedabout the room and leant pictur-esquene- ss

to the scene. Thebride, who has justly held thepalm for beauty, was attired inwhite and looked radiantly hap-py. Miss Kline, also in white, looked lovely enough to be abride herself. The groom, ahandsome, manly young fellow, acted his part in a calm, digni-fied manner, as though gettingmarried were an every day oc-currence. Only once did he fal-ter and that was when one of hislegs got to dancing an impromptujig all by itself, but as every-body was Uoking at the bridethis little incident passed unno-ticed. As Justice William D.Keilly, who ties a handsome ma-trimonial knot, uttered thesolemn and touching wordswhich united, maybe forever.two trusting souls, tears sprangto the eves of many of the ladiespresent. At the conclusion ofthe ceremony there was a roundof hand shaking and kisses warmand tender were exchanged.Just before we got to the bridethe kisses were declared "out"and no new supply expected andwe backed out. considerably dis-appointed. The bride and groomwere the recipients of many andvarious presents, including analarm clock, foot warmers, glassand china ware, jewelry, handglasses, a sack of beans, a sideof bacon, and a few dried ap-ples. At six o'clock the wed-ding guests sat down to a sumpt-uous least and at eight a danceat the hall, lusting well into thenight, was inaugurated. Mr.and Mrs. Sullivan are now athome at the Cross Links Kanch,of which place Mr. Sullivan hasassumed the management. Atrip to Los Angeles, Kl Púso,Phoenix, and other places of in-terest will be made next month.

The Chloride poisoning casebids fair to remain a mystery,so far as the perpetrator of thedeed is concerned. Mr. Hullin-ge- r

has almost entirely recover-ed from the effects of the strych-nine.

Cattle in this section are look-ing remarkably well, consider-ing the condition of the ranges.Hot, dry winds are prevailing. If wind presages rain, whatHoods we will have this summer!quizas.

    J. 11. Petrie, whose leg wasbroken several weeks ago as theresult of a wagon upset, is im-proving rapidly. Mr. Petrie hasbeen the recipient of so much at-tention from neighbors andfriends in the way of choicedishes, fruit, cigars, etc., that heis thinking seriously of breakinghis other leg as soon as he isable to be about again.

    OFFICIAL PAPER OF SOCORRO COUNTY.

    SATURDAY, JUNK 20. l'WS.

Is deciding to conduct a longterritorial campaign, the demo-crats of New Mexico showedplainly that they appreciatedtheir needs.

JrnuK Mann's manner of con-ducting court during the lastten days in the absence of JudgeParker has greatly pleased thepeople of Socorro county. Nonebut the most favorable commentshave been heard.

Conctkninc; the fact that At-torney Jas. (í. Fitch has beenmade chairman of the democrat-ic territorial central committee, all that can be said is that if Mr.Fitch must lose it is too bad thathe should not lose in a bettercause.

Tin: agility with which othercandidates got out of the wayfor Mr. Larrazolo may have beenan expression of democratic har-mony and it may not. Kxactlvthe same agility would havebeen shown if the occasion hadbeen one of choosing a candi-date who must, literally, butthis head against a stone wall.

Mk. Andki-w- has twice beenelected New Mexico's delegatein congress and even his mostvirulent political enemies haveaccused him of no sins of eithercommission or omission in hisservice to the territory. lie hasdone for New Mexico what noother citizen of the common-wealth could have done in thesame place at the same time. Ifthe republican territorial convention should see tit to nominateMr. Andrews for another termin congress he should be and hewill be

A Roawell Plank.Somi: of the planks in that

democratic platform adopted atKoswell seem to Have been considerably warped. For instance, there is a plank condemningalleged republican frauds at theterritorial election two years ago.

Citizens of Socorro countyhave not forgotten that imme-diately after that election localdemocratic statesmen of more orless note raised a tremendoushullabaloo over the report that atew scores of sheep herders froma neighboring county had beenbrought into the Magdalena precinct and induced to vote the republican ticket without the fear

f (od in their hearts and without a üue regaril lor t tie pureand sanctified political sentíments that innate the averagedemocratic bosom.

The citizens of this county havenot forgotten, either, that thoseselfsame democratic statesmencalled for an official investigationof the conduct of the election inthe Magdalena precinct, with anMea of horrifying an expectantworld and placing Mr. Larrazoloin the long coveted seat in con-gress to which republican elec-tion frauds and democratic dis-appointment entitled him.

Neither have the citizens ofSocorro county forgotten thatthe investigation called for wasconducted with a solemnity be-fitting so great and so grave anoccasion and in a manner whichmust have bien in all respectssatisfactory to the representa-tives of Socorro county democ-racy in attendance.

And never, "while the riverscontinue to run to .the sea,"will citizens of Socorro county

forget that the results of the in-vestigation, asked for by democrats, and carried on by repre-sentatives of both parties, intothe conduct of the election in theMagdalena precinct in the yearof our Lord one thousand ninehundred and six, showed thattwo sheep herders from a neigh-boring county had actually vot-ed at Magdalena, and further-more, that lK)th of them had casttheir ballots for that peerless, that nonpareil, exponent and ex-pounder of New Mexico democra-cy, Honorable Octaviano Anton-io

    DEMOCRATIC HARMONY.

Thk Svn, the new and abledaily exponent of New Mexicodemocracy published at Albu-iueriu- e,

evidently loes not takea very roseate view of the al-leged democratic harmony thatresulted from the Koswell con-vention. Says the Sun:

THE RECEPTION AND BALL

In Honor of Judge Mann Most Suc-cessful Event of Kind in Years.

The reception and ball givenin the (jarcia opera house lastnight by Lodge No. M of theSpanish-America- n Alliance inhonor of Hon. Kdward A. Mannwas altogether one of the mostsuccessful events of its kind thathave been given in Socorro inmany years.

The hall had been very artis-tically decorated by Capt T. J.Matthews, the music and the re-freshments were excellent, thespacious dancing floor was crowd-ed to its utmost capacity, amieverybody enjoyed himself tothe top of his bent until threeo'clock in the morning.

At nine o'clock Hon. W. K.Martin made a brief but charac-teristically eloquent address wel-coming the guest of the even-ing. Judge Mann responded ineloquent and impressive termsexpressive of his keen apprecia-tion of the hospitality that lodgeNo. ( and the city of Socorrohad shown him.

Two Girls and a Bobcat.A. I). Coon tells this story of a

remarkable adventure of twogirls and a bobcat: Mrs. A. M.Skinner, formerly Miss (lladvsCoon, and Miss Ivlith Mayberywere riding over the plain notfar from the hitter's home nearDatil. when they started a coy-ote, as they thought. One pro-posed that they run the animaldown. Away they went, pellmell, over the plain until the an-imal took refuge behind a rock. When the girls came upon itthey found that they had corner-ed a whopping big bobcat. It isquite well known that in nego-tiating with a life-size- d bobcatdiscretion is required. MissKdith told her companion towatch the animal, waited for noprotest, rode at breakneck speedlour miles to her home, changedhorses, returned with her fath-er's Winchester, and shot thebduat three tim:s, wounding itso severely that it could not runaway but took refuge in a tree, where the young huntresseswere obliged to leave it for lackot ammunition.
