INTRODUCTION

TOURPAPERWORKForeverythingtorunsmoothly,it’simportanttofilloutalltourpaperworkcorrectlyandcompletely.Seebelowfortheformsusedoneachtour.TOURACTIVITYCHECKLIST:
Thetouractivitychecklistformistokeepanaccurateaccountofwhatoccursoneverytour.Managementwillrefertothetouractivitychecklistfromeachtourtoverifydailytourdetailsanddeterminewhatshouldbecommunicatedtothecruiselineshoreexcursionteam.• ItistheresponsibilityoftheLEADGUIDEtoseethattheformisfilledoutproperlyforeachtour.
o Fillinthedate,namesofguides,van/trailer,andcheckoffallapplicableboxesbeforetheguestpickup.
o Afteryoupickuptheguestsandhavecountedtheticketstomakesureyouhaveoneforeveryone,filloutthenumberofshipclientsandincludeanycomps,independentsandM&Mclientsontheappropriatelines.
o Theleadguidemustcountthewaiversignaturesandverifythatallparticipantshavesignedthewaiverbeforecheckingthatlineandsigningoffonthetouractivitychecklist.
• ThefinishedTourActivitysheetispaperclippedtoallticketsfromthetourandputinthecupholderinthevan.Thedriverwilldropthemoffinthelabeledbininthetourshackafterreturningfromthetour.
o Afterthetour,theleadguidewillfindthesheetintheTourShackandfillinthePostTourNotessection.Pleasemakeanoteforeverytour,evenifnothingspecialtoreport.
WAIVERFORMS:• Itisbothguidesresponsibilitytomakesurethateveryoneproperlyfillsoutthewaiverform.Noone
mayrideabikewithoutacompletedwaiverform.Aguideordrivermusttellclientstoreadthescript

WATERBOTTLEFORM:Thisformisusedtotrackandaccountfordonationsthroughourwaterbottlefundraiserprogram.• Thewaterbottlepouchwillcontainapaperformand$20insmallbillsforchange.Afteryouhave
collectedthemoneyatthestartofthetourforwaterbottles,thedrivernotesthenumberofbottlesdonatedforandthemoneycollectedontheform.
• Thewaterbottlepouchstaysinthevanbetweentoursandisonlybroughtinafterthelasttourofeachday.Onthatlasttour,totaluptheformandputitbackinthetourshackbin.
• Ifyouneedadditionalchangemadebetweentours,bringthepouchintotheshop.• Ifabottlegoesoutwithnodonation,donottallyitonthesheet.Itwillbewashedandre-used.• Ifaclientwantstomakeadonationafterthetour,eitherguidecantakecareofthemortheshopstaff
–theshophasawaterbottledonationenvelopeandtheirownformstouse.
AllwaterbottledonationscollectedontoursarematchedbySockeyeCycleandpassedthroughtoAlaska-basedconservationorganizations.Pleasekeepdonation$separatefromanytip$youhave.
WHITEPASSTRAINVOUCHERS:• WhenyouareonaTrainandBiketransfer,youneedtofillthisformoutaccuratelyandhandittothe
stationmanager.Thisistheticketforallofourpassengersforthatdeparture,anditiswhatWPYRwillinvoiceusfor.

TOUROVERVIEW:KlondikeSummittoSeaBicycleTourTheKlondikeBicycleTourwastheoriginalSockeyeCycletourinSkagwayin1992!Infact,itwasoneofthefirstoutdooradventuretoursofferedinSkagway.ThetourdescendstheKlondikeHighwayfromthesummitatWhitePass(3292’)toourbikeshopindowntownSkagway(atsealevel).Therideisjustunder15milesinlengthandisalmostentirelydownhill.TheWhitePassTrainandBikeTourisarelatedtourwheretheridingisthesameastheKlondike.GENERALINFO• Passportsarerequiredforallguestsandguides.TheUSCustomscheckpointisatmile6onthe
KlondikeHighway,andwecheckinwithcustomsoneverytour.Apassportcardisrecommendedforguidessoyoudon’thavetobringyourPassportbookwithyouoneachtour.

• Thetailguidewaitsbythevantomeettheclients.Greetclients,askfortheirfirstname,wheretheyarefromandintroduceyourselfandthedriver.Thewaiverthatallparticipantsarerequiredtoreadandsignispassedaroundbythetailguideordriverandissignedwhilewewaitfortheotherparticipants.Ifaclientisnotwillingtosignthewaiver,theycannotgoonthetour.Parentsmustsignforanyoneunder18ontheboldline.
• Loadthebackofthevanfirstandleaveoneseatontherearbenchemptyforthetailguidewholoadslast.
• LeadguidecountstheticketsandfillsoutticketsectiononTASheetwhilevanisbeingloaded.PaperclipticketstoTAsheetandplaceonconsole.
• Beforeyouleavethedock,makesurethenumberofticketscollectedmatcheswiththenumberofclientsinthevan,don’tleavewithfolksinthebathroom!
CheckoutwiththeShorexbeforeleavingandconfirmthatyouhaveeveryone.Ifyouaremissinganyone,
makesuretheyareawareofthisandknowthatyouareleavingwithoutthem.VANNARRATIONANDDRIVE(APPROX.25MINUTES):Thereisasamplenarrationatthebackofthismanual.Weencourageyoutodevelopyourownstylebasedaroundthehistoryandenvironmentinregion.

• Atthescheduleddeparturetime,youshouldbeleavingthedock.Driveslowlyaroundthedockareaandexpectbusesandpeopletojumpoutinfrontofyou.
• Ifyou’renotsure,checkwithbasetoseeifticketsneedtobedroppedoff,orifanyoneelseneedstobepickedupbeforeleavingtown.
• Theleadguidestartsadialogwithclientsimmediately–usethePAunlessthereisasmalltourwithnooneinthebackseats.(Re)introduceyourselfandtheotherstaff.Giveanoverviewofthetour.
• Thedrivermustpayspecialattentiondrivingintown.Thespeedlimitintownis25MPHandthewidthofthetraileriswiderthanthevan!Paycloseattentiontocorners,approachingvehicles,passingbikesandpeople.STOPifyouarenotsureofclearance.
• GiveageneraltownhistoryasyouheadoutStateSt.andtransitiontoothertopicsasyouheaduptheroad.It’sespeciallyeffectivetotimethingsyoudiscusswithexamplesthatcanbeseenoutthewindow.
• Onceoutoftown,thedriverneedstomaintainaspeedof30-40mphgoingupthehillandnotmorethan40mphgoingdown.
• Drivetothesummit,orifthesummitisfoggedin,stoplowerontheroad,belowthefoglineatadesignatedstartingpoint.
• Abouttwomilesfromthesummit,showthewaterbottleanddescribeourdonationprogram(it’shelpfultotransitionfromtalkingaboutplants,wildlife,ortheenvironmenttothewaterbottles):

RADIOPROCEDURESTheVHFradiosystemisusedforbusinesscommunicationinthefield.TheFCCregulatesandmonitorstheairwaves,includingours.Manybusinessesintown,USCustoms,andthepolicehavescannersandmonitorradiocommunication.Whenyoutalkontheradioitmustbeforbusinessonly.Youwilluseyourfirstnametocommunicatetoothers.Iftwopeoplehavethesamename,onepersonshouldusealastinitialoranickname,andkeepitconsistentthroughouttheseason.Theshop&officeinbothSkagwayandHaineshaveastronger,baseradio.Startwithyournameandendwithwhoyouarecalling,example"MatttoSkagwayBase,"respond,"ThisisSkagwaybase,goahead."Theradiosareprogrammedwithupto16channels.Theonesusedarethecompanychannels1and2.Stayonchannel1unlessyouaretoldtogotochannel2.Whenfinishedon2makesureyousay“backto1.”Alistofallthechannelsisnexttothebaseradio.Keepyourradiochattertoaminimumasweareallusingthesamechannelandonlyonepersoncantalkatatime.Ifyouhavemorethanafewwordstosaygotochannel2.Waitforacommunicationbreakbeforetransmittingsothatyoudon’t“step”onanothertransmission.Ifanemergencyarisescallthebasestationonchannel1andsay,“WehaveaXXXXXpriorityincidentgoto2.”Whenbaseresponds,“on2”giveadescriptionoftheincidentandwhatisneeded.Donotcommunicatesensitiveinformationonchannel1orgetintospecificsasalltoursandvanswillhearyou.Thebasecalls911onthetelephoneandrequestsanambulance.Ifyoucannotgetthroughtobaseonyourhand-held,trytohaveavanrelaythemessageforyou,orridetocustoms.Ifyouareinthevanandyouhearthatcallgotochannel2andrelaythemessage.Thehand-heldradiobatteriesneedtobemaintainedcorrectlyinordertoprovidepowerwhenyouneedthem.Theyshouldregularlyberundowntothepointwheretheywon'ttransmitbeforebeingrecharged.Theredlightwillblinkoritwillbeepwhendepleted.Youhavethreebatteriesthatyouareresponsiblefor.Theymustbelabeledwithanumberoryourinitials.Turnyourradioonwhenyouareworkingandoffwhenyouareinthevan.Alwayscarryachargedsparebattery.Thereareseveral"deadspots"onthetourswhereyoucan'ttransmitorreceive.Knowwheretheseareanddoperiodicradiochecks.Ithelpstopointtheantennainthedirectionoftown.KeeptheradiounderyourjacketinadverseweatherandclipthePTT(push-to-talk)microphonetoyourlapel.AlwayskeythePTTwhileridingwithyourlefthandwhilekeepingyourrighthandontherearbrake.Whenridingyourbike,havetheradiovolumeallthewayup.Ifyouarehavingproblemswitharadiobringittothetourmanager’sattentionandnoteitonthetourmaintenanceform.

Whenanemergencyarises,pleaseremaincalmandfollowtheseproceduresexactly.Makesurethatyouhavealltheequipmentandarepreparedtorespondtoanemergencyoneverytour.Continuallyreviewtheseproceduresthroughouttheseason,checkyourradios,carryachargedsparebatteryandknowthedeadspotswhereyoucannottransmit.Ifanyonefallsoffamovingbicycle,theycannotcontinueonthetour.Ifitisaminortipover,andaguidewitnessesit,andafteraprimaryassessmentitisdeterminedthatthepersonisuninjured,heorshemaycontinueriding(anexampleofthiswouldbesomeonefallingoverastheytrytodismounttheirbikeinaturnout).Forallincidents,takenotesandnotifymanagement.Documentationisrequiredonallsituationsinvolvingaclient,evenifthepersonisnotvisiblyinjured.

• Highpriorityincident–Aclienthasfallenandinjuriesareapparent.Afterprimaryassessment,itmay
bedeterminedthatanambulanceisneeded.Thefirstguideonthescenecallsbase,andinacalmvoicesays,“Skagwaybasewehaveahighpriorityincident,goto2.”Makesurebaseisin2beforespeaking.Tellthemanagerrespondingfrombasethenatureoftheincidentandifanambulanceisrequired.
Notethatifyouareadriverandhearanotherguidetryingtoreachbasewithahighpriorityincident,stayofftheradio.Onlyonepersoncantransmitatatimeandthepriorityistoestablishcommunicationwithbasesothattheappropriateresponsecanbegin.Ifyouarepickingupthecallinavanandcanhearthatbaseisnotresponding,youcanlettheguideknowthatyoucanheartheircallandtrytorelaytobase.ThevanradioscanreachbasefrommostplacesontheKlondikehighway.Ifanambulanceisneeded,thefirstpriorityisthegetthemcalledandenroute.Aftertheyhavebeennotified,moreinformationcanberelayedovertheradio.Stayonchannel2forallcommunicationwithbase.

touchthebicycleunlessitisimpedingtraffic.Whenthemanagerarrivesgiveabriefingofonlywhatyouknow.Themanagerwilldothecrashedbicycleinspectionwithanotherriderorguideasawitness.
• Whenthevanarrivesonthesceneitshouldbeparkedabovetheaccidentsoastodiverttrafficaround,butnotblocktheroad.Turnoffengine,setemergencybrakeandactivateemergencyflashers.BringtheFirstAidkitandablankettotheguideadministeringaid.Assistwithreportsandtrafficorwithwhateverisneeded.Whentheambulancecrewarrivesgivethemroomtoworkandbereadytoanswerquestionsaboutthevictim’scondition.
• Whenmanagementarrives,oneorbothguidesmayberelievedandcantalktothetourgroupabout
continuingontheride.Offeravanridetoanyonethatwantsone.Ifanyoneisvisiblyupsettheyshouldrideinthevan.Oneorbothguidestakethegroupbacktobasebybike.Whenthegroupisnearingtheshop,radiomanagementtoseeiftheyneedtomeetwithanyone.Anyonewhowitnessedafallmayhaveawitnessstatementtakenifdeemedappropriatebymanagement.
• Formediumandhighpriorityincidentwheretheriderwasremovedfromthetour,managementwill
