    WIND CATCHER-VENTILATION&COOLING

The windcatcher can function in 2ways: directing airflow downwardusing direct wind entry, directingairflow upwards using a wind-assisted temperature gradient

It is essentially a tall, capped tower with one faceopen at the top. This open side faces theprevailing wind, thus "catching" it, and brings itdown the tower into the heart of the building tomaintain air flow, thus cooling the building interior. It does not necessarily cool the air itself, butrather relies on the rate of airflow to provide acooling effect.

Upward airflow due to Wind-assis ted temperature gradient

Windcatchers are also used in combination with a qanat, or undergroundcanal. In this method, the open side of the tower faces away from thedirection of the prevailing wind (the tower's orientation can be adjusted by

directional ports at the top). By keeping only this tower open, air is drawnupwards using the Coand effect. The pressure differential on one side of the building causes air to bedrawn down into the passage on the other side. The hot air is broughtdown into the qanat tunnel and is cooled by coming into contact with thecool earth and cold water running through the qanat. The cooled air isdrawn up through the windcatcher, again by the Coand effect. On thewhole, the cool air flows through the building, decreasing the structure'soverall temperature. The effect is magnified by the water vapour from theqanat.

1.Less radiation heat. Theconsecutive brick arches on theroof avoid direct solar radiation atnoon.

2.The openings at the end of eacharch ensures ventilation inside thecylinder, which take theaccumulated heat out.

Traditionally, solar shading existed as fixed systems bracketed in place ona building. Have a look at the video below, however, and youll see some ofthe possibilities with dynamic, controllable systems that react toenvironmental conditions:

The design of Masdar HQ is

dominated by 11 cone-shapedadaptations of traditional windtowers which act as outlet windtowers drawing hot air upwardsduring the day. The optimized formof these cones (also called windcones) uses stack ventilation aswell as the wind above the buildingto create a negative pressure atthe top of the cones, which in turncreates air movement in the interiorcourtyard spaces at the base of thecone and draws cooler air upthrough the subterranean levels ofthe city below. At night, the windcones reverse roles acting as inletwind towers drawing cool night airdownwards to cool the buildingstructure (Figure 3).

    TECHNIQUE-HEATING&COOLING

A geothermal heatpump (GSHP) is a centralheating and/or cooling systemthat transfers heat to or from theground. It uses the earth as a heat source(in the winter) or a heat sink (inthe summer). This design takesadvantage of the moderatetemperatures in the ground toboost efficiency and reduce theoperational costs of heating andcooling systems.
