HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Society of Friends, or Quakers, is a religious sect founded by George Fox in England in 1647. The first Quakermeetings were established in America in the late seventeenth century, and the first meeting was established in Indianain 1809.

Differences among Quakers concerning theology, discipline, manner of worship, and members’ interactions with thelarger society led to several divisions within the Society of Friends during the nineteenth century. The mostsignificant occurred in 1827–28 and resulted in the formation of two branches—Orthodox and Hicksite (named forElias Hicks, a New York Quaker). After 1828, most Indiana Quakers attended meetings of the Orthodox branch.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Quakers had largely abandoned the two widely recognized external signs ofmembership in the Society of Friends–“plain speech” (the use of “thee” and “thou”) and distinctive “plain dress.” Many Quaker meetings had also adopted forms of worship (e.g., singing, revivals, preaching) and structure (e.g., thedesignation of pastors), which were similar to other Protestant denominations.

Quaker missionary activity, much of it initiated by Indiana Quakers, has resulted in significant demographic changeswithin the Society of Friends worldwide. The largest populations of Quakers now live in Kenya, and Bolivia’s numberof Quakers is rapidly increasing.

Quakers have long been associated with reform movements. During the first half of the nineteenth century, Quakerswere among the leading opponents of slavery in the United States. After the Civil War they were prominent in effortsto educate and provide for the care of freed slaves. Other concerns of Quakers include Native American rights, women’s rights, prison reform, and world peace. Prominent Indiana Quaker reformers include Levi Coffin (associatedwith the Underground Railway), Rhoda Coffin, and Sarah Smith (both active in women’s prison reform).
