Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America June 2016 SCBA Newsletter 1 FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK..… Dear SCBA members, Welcome to the June issue of the SCBA Newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to give you all an update on the organization of the 2017 SCBA International Symposium. As I alluded to in my last communication, the 2017 SCBA symposium will be held in Hangzhou, China from June 29 to July 2, 2017. We are fortunate enough to form an alliance with the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CSBMB), which will co-organize this exciting symposium. Professor Xiaolong Liu, who is the Secretary of CSBMB, and also the Director of the Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBCB), Chinese Academy of Sciences, will represent CSBMB in this joint effort. Local organizers include Zhejiang University and Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, headed by Xinhua Feng. In the past few months, we have made important progresses in a number of different areas. For instance, we have formed the Advisory Committee as well as the Scientific Program Committee, chaired by Professor Lin Mei of Augusta University of Georgia and Xiaolong Liu of IBCB. With the help of many, including Professor Haifan Lin of Yale, Professor Xiaofan Wang of Duke University and our SCBA Executive Director Xi He of Harvard Medical School, we have secured and are pursuing distinguished keynote and plenary speakers from US, Canada, Europe and China, who will cover important topics ranging from basic mechanistic research to translational medicine. We have also selected the First World Hotel, Hangzhou as our meeting venue, which has excellent conference facilities, nice room accommodations and access to public transportations, allowing easy access to the West Lake and other interesting landmarks. We will negotiate with this and adjacent hotels for discounted group rates for the accommodation of symposium participants. One of our current and urgent efforts is focused on fund-raising for the symposium, and in this regard we owe our thanks to Professor Lin Li, who is the Chair of the Board of CSBMB and the President of the Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Li has not only been a strong supporter of the symposium from the start but is now also leading the efforts to raise the necessary financial support for the symposium. Our other efforts are focused on the assembly of the scientific program, and a call for current session proposal can be found in this issue of Newsletter. I encourage all of you to participate in this important process. We are also in the midst of constructing a website for the SCBA 2017 and we welcome any suggestions that you may have. We will have regular updates in the future SCBA Newsletters and the meeting website, when it is ready. Last but not least, we would like to extend our appreciation to our immediate past SCBA president (2014-15), Professor Dihua Yu of MD Anderson Cancer Center, for her continuous engagement, support and her wisdom. Respectfully yours, Yang Shi, Ph.D. SCBA President, 2016-2017 June 2016 NEWSLETTER Volume 31 | Issue 2 Newsletter Editor: Binghui Shen, Ph.D. Production Editor: Chris Lau, Ph.D.

Please indicate which speaker in this session is a junior faculty or/and a woman faculty: Name: General Information and Conditions of Session Proposals:

1. The symposium will be co-sponsored by SCBA and the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (CSBMB). SCBA/CSBMB will waive the Registration Fees for all invited speakers and session chairs. SCBA/CSBMB will offer speakers/session chairs free daily coffee breaks, lunch and dinner. SCBA/CSBMB will not cover the travel and accommodation expenses including airfares and hotel lodging for invited speakers and session chairs.

2. Please consider 5 speakers as an optimal number of speakers in each session. If the co-chair(s) do give a presentation, then the total speaker numbers should be reduced. Time allocation will be 75 minutes/session. Each speaker speaks 12 min. and leaves 3 min. for questions and answers. We want to promote scientific interactions.

3. All invited speakers are encouraged to be present and actively participate for the entire meeting through interaction and discussion with other fellow colleagues, young investigators, students and media personnel.

4. If invited speakers cannot participate, co-chairs are responsible to find a replacement. However, the Scientific Program Committee can also recommend alternate speakers to replace those who cannot come due to unforeseen and unexpected circumstances. Any such absentees should be identified at the earliest possible time to the Organizers and scientific committee Chair and co-Chair.

5. Please indicate in the proposal whether those invited speakers whom you have suggested have or have not accepted your nomination by selecting either “YES” or “NO”. Acceptance of the invitation implies that the invited speakers will assume the financial responsibility of attendance and presentation in the SCBA symposium.

6. The Scientific Program Committee will preferentially evaluate proposals that are more directly related to the theme of the meeting and more preferably on those which have indication and “mutual agreement” of the invited speakers to participate in this meeting if the proposed workshop is accepted. Additionally, the Scientific Program Committee will give higher priority to session proposals that include at least one junior (e.g., Assistant Professor) or/and a woman SCBA member, or speakers from Taiwan and/or mainland China.

7. Each accepted session co-chair and invited speaker must submit an abstract and complete the registration process at the meeting website (http://will be available soon) by specified deadline.

8. There will be fewer sessions organized this time than in the past SCBA conferences, so it is important that the proposals should be submitted as early as possible.

9. There will be opportunity to submit abstracts for poster presentations after the meeting website is open in about 1-2 months.

Please submit your Session Proposal by e-mail attachment to Dr. Xi He ([email protected]), and Ms. Rebekah Wysocki ([email protected]) before or on October 14, 2016. Acceptance of the above conditions is required for the proposal to be considered. Meeting reports, Spring, 2016: SCBA members play an important role in Cold Spring Harbor Asia Conferences

Starting in 2010, Cold Spring Harbor Asia Conferences has been making impact in biological sciences in China, Asia, and the world. The conferences are held at Suzhou Dushu Lake Conference Center in Suzhou, China, sixty miles west of Shanghai and in easy reach of international and domestic airports. Suzhou is an ancient city known as the Venice of China, famous for its canals and private gardens and home to scholars for more than two millenia. Symposia, conferences and summer schools follow the Cold Spring Harbor tradition in showcasing merit-based scientific advances in an informal but intense atmosphere. Our SCBA members are a major driving force that made the meeting series very high-impact. Here is a brief report for the meeting that took place this past spring: DNA Metabolism, Genomic Stability & Disease, June 13-17, Judith Campbell, Daochun Kong, Binghui Shen, Stephen West

This is an inaugural meeting in the field of DNA repair right after the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2015 was awarded to three pioneer scientists: Paul L. Modrich, Tomas Lindahl, and Aziz Sancar. The conference was held on June 13-17, 2016. The scientific program was arranged by an international organizing committee that includes Judith L. Campbell (California Institute of Technology, USA), Daochun Kong (Peking University, China), Binghui Shen (Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope, USA), Stephen West (Francis Crick Institute, UK). More than 250 scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students participated in the meeting. 65 high quality presentations were delivered during the 5-day meetings in a very stimulating atmosphere. Question and

answer sessions, coffee and tea breaks as well as the poster session were very important parts of the communications. The participants very much enjoyed the high-quality scientific exchanges, delicious food, and beautiful environment in Suzhou and decided to have the meeting again in two years. THE 30TH ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM OF SCBA-TEXAS

The SCBA Texas Chapter (SCBA-TX) hosted its 30th annual symposium in the Texas Medical Center of Houston, Texas, on May 7, 2016. It was a very successful annual event, completing another new page of the SCBA-TX chapter’s long history. The symposium was packed with exciting presentations and with an enthusiastic audience representing the faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and staff members from all of the academic institutions at the Texas Medical Center, including Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC), University of Texas-Health Science Center at Houston (UTHEALTH), University of Houston (UH), Texas A&M-University Health Science Center (TAMHSC) at Houston, and the Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI). There were also participants from other cities of Texas, including University of Texas-Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). The keynote speaker was Dr. Wenyi Wei, a renowned professor from Harvard and an internationally known pioneer in protein ubiquitination in cell cycle regulation and cancer signaling

This year’s symposium was held at the Alkek Auditorium of Baylor College of Medicine as a traditional all-day event from 8:30am to 5:30pm. It was one of the largest events in the symposium’s history in which over 150

scientists attended. This serves to remind us all just how important our work is.

The event’s theme was to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of SCBA-TX and scientific achievements by SCBA-TX members, as well as to forecast the future success. The symposium started with brief welcome remarks from the SCBA-TX President Dr. Shao-Cong Sun (Professor of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center), followed by SCBA-TX Distinguished Lecture given by Dr. Mien-Chie Hung (Professor and Vice President for Basic Research of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center). Dr. Hung highlighted the historical milestones of SCBA, followed by a scientific presentation entitled “Marker-guided cancer therapy”. The plenary sessions also included 5 other speakers from 5 different SCBA-TX institutes. The speakers represented a nice combination of internationally renowned senior scientists and a number of young principle investigators recently recruited to the lone star State. The 20-minute outstanding lectures covered diverse topics: “COUP-TFII and diseases” by Dr. Ming-Jer Tsai (BCM); “TRPC4 channels in neurological disorders” by Dr. Michael Zhu (UTHEALTH); “Oligonucleotide aptamer, a new tool for cancer diagnosis and precision treatment” by Dr. Youli Zu (TMHRI); “HIV susceptibility of human antigen-specific CD4 T cells in AIDS pathogenesis and vaccine immunology” by Dr. Haitao Hu (UTMB); “Kinase independent functions of EGFR in cancer” by Dr. Zhang Weihua (UH); and “Image cytometry in cancer research” by Dr. Jean Qiu (Nexcelom Bioscience).

In the early afternoon, 36 trainees (Chinese students and postdoctoral fellows and some other students and fellows working in Chinese faculty laboratories) gave oral presentations in six concurrent sessions, which were divided based on topics of submitted abstracts. Dr. Jianming Xu (Professor of Baylor College of Medicine) served as the chair of the trainee sessions. Judges for the trainees’ presentations included Drs. Bingliang Fang (MDACC), Feng Yang (BCM), Li Xin (BCM), Qingchun Tong (UTHEALTH), Boyi Gan (MDACC), Leyuan Liu (TAMHSC), Yong Xu (BCM), Longhou Fang (TMHRI), Shuxing Zhang (MDACC), Guangwei Du (UTHEALTH), Jin Wang (BCM-Pharmacology), and Xiaoping Sun (MDACC).

The winners for the prestigious SCBA-TX trainee

This is a highly prestigious and competitive award that was established in 1995 by Professor Wang’s family to honor Professor Alexander Yeu-Ming Wang for his contribution and achievement to science, education, Chinese community, and SCBA in which Dr. Wang served as a founder.

The finale of this symposium was Dr. Wenyi Wei’s keynote address highlighted with the overture given by Dr. Jianping Jin, President-Elect of SCBA-TX and friend of Dr. Wei. Dr. Wenyi Wei is an internationally renowned scientist from Harvard University, particularly known for his seminal contributions to the fields of cell cycle, cancer biology and ubiquitination. He has made many high-impact findings and is considered one of the pioneers in the elucidation of how ubiquitination regulates cell cycle progression and tumorigenesis.

With the close of Dr. Wenyi Wei’s outstanding Keynote Lecture and after the award presentation, Dr. Shao-Cong Sun gave concluding remarks, on behalf of his leadership team, to thank the attendees and speakers, and also specifically thanked Mrs. Hellen Weng, wife of the late Professor Alexander Yeu-Ming Wang, for her continuous support of the Professor Alexander Yeu-Ming Wang Memorial Scholarship. Mrs. Weng also gave a short speech to congratulate the continuous success of SCBA-TX. Dr. Yi Li, former SCBA-TX president and current National SCBA membership committee member, gave a short presentation for National SCBA membership recruitment. Finally, the SCBA-TX President-Elect Dr. Jianping Jin introduced his new leadership team and announced the adjournment of the 30th SCBA-TX Annual Symposium.

As a tradition, the SCBA-TX Treasurer (Dr. James M. You) presented the financial report during a very brief business session, indicating an impressive increase of our members over the previous year. An election was also held during the symposium to establish a new team of SCBA-TX members to lead this organization. The new SCBA-TX leadership team includes President Dr. Jianping Jin (UTHEALTH), President-Elect Dr. Xiaodong Cheng (UTHEALTH), Secretary Dr. Boyi Gan (MDACC) and Treasurer Dr. Feng Yang (BCM).

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

The KT Jeang Memorial Lecture Fund

In memory of the passing of our dearest friend and past President of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America, Dr. Kuan-Teh Jeang, a “KT Jeang Memorial Lecture Fund” is being established to support the KT Jeang Memorial Lecture by an established investigator in biosciences during the Biennial SCBA Symposia. In addition to having an outstanding and productive scientific career at the National Institutes of Health, KT Jeang was immensely dedicated to SCBA. KT Jeang had been one of the most outspoken members of our Society who, among other contributions, had persistently raised the awareness of the “glass ceiling” and advancement issues on the representation of Asian American scientists in leadership positions. During his tenure as the SCBA President, he had also greatly expanded our membership and had improved significantly the endowment of the Society, which helped to provide a higher visibility within the scientific community and a solid financial foundation for future development for the Society. Donations to KT Jeang Memorial Lecture Fund will help significantly to preserve his legacy and to promote the ideals that he felt so strongly about. Please send your

tax-deductible contributions to SCBA Treasurer through the “donate” link button on the front page of SCBA website: http://www.scbasociety.org/, and specify the donation as for the “K.T. Jeang Memorial Fund”. Donation can also be made by checks payable to “SCBA” and add “KT Jeang Memorial Lecture Fund” to the subject line on the bottom left of the check. Please mail your check to Dr. Ying Zhang, SCBA Treasurer, 307 Treemont Way, Rockville, MD 20850; email: [email protected].

THE JOSEPH LI EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT AWARDS

Joe Li had great passion in education, both at the Department of Biology at Utah State University and throughout SCBA. In particular, he actively sought funding for the Society, particularly keen on providing travel fellowships to students, postdoctoral fellows, and young investigators to attend the biennial SCBA international symposia, held at various locales around the globe. Recognizing his special contributions to education advancement, the SCBA Council has voted unanimously for the establishment of the “Joseph K.-K. Li Educational Advancement Award” to be presented biennially to qualified graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and young scientists to travel and present at the biennial SCBA international symposia. The number of awards will be determined specifically by the current COOs and Council and will depend on available funds. Friends, colleagues and interested individuals are encouraged to contribute to the “Joseph K.-K. Li Educational Advancement Fund” at SCBA. Please send your tax-deductible contributions to SCBA Treasurer through the “donate” link button on the front page of SCBA website: http://www.scbasociety.org/, and specify the donation as for the “Joseph Li Travel Award”. The current Treasurer will issue a receipt to the donor for every donation. For record keeping, please also send a record of your donation via e-mail or postal mail to the Co-Executive Director, Chris Lau, Ph.D.,
