1B. More Jobs,Less Poverty:

Two Goals post2015

Sunday December 8th

Background. Around the world we are witnessing increased socialtensions related to a dearth of jobs in the midst of a systemiceconomic crisis and frustrated socio-economic expectations. In someregions, lack of growth has led to mindboggling unemployment levels, whilst in others, the distribution of income, the quality of available jobsor the prevalence of informality in the labor market has become avery heavy shackle for the attainment of healthy, functional, cohesivesocieties.

Given the critical importance of a well-functioning labor marketfor sustained growth and the stability of democracy, Members haveagreed to centre this year´s Club de Madrid Annual Conference onthis topic – ‘Societies that Work: Jobs for Inclusive Growth. A Call to theG20’.

Club de Madrid believes this is an ideal moment to act on thefuture of jobs and society and what this entails for democracy.Governments, multilateral organizations and civil society are all

struggling to address this major challenge of unemployment and socialunrest and it is no news that policy makers must nd coordinatedanswers.

This is particularly relevant to the post-2015 scenario and the G-20agenda. During the Conference we will seek to share best practicesand identify strategies that can serve to tackle the structural problemspresent, in different shapes and forms, in societies worldwide, byaddressing the improvements needed in policies and institutions toensure economic growth, “decent jobs” and greater prosperity for all.

This analysis and call to action will count on the experienceand independent views of many Club de Madrid Members – all

democratic, former political leaders from around the world – and theexpertise of specialists in the eld representatives from governments, multilaterals, business, academia and civil society.

Conference objective:

• Identify measures to increase employment for sustainable growthincluding legislation and incentives as well as sectors with potentialfor job creation.

• Contribute to the coordination of stakeholders around a set ofpriorities and actions.

Expected results:

• Identify best practices and policy recommendations to promoteemployment.

• Share and disseminate best practices and strategicrecommendations amongst main actors. The conclusions will beofcially presented to the Australian G-20 Presidency.

Expected deliverables:

• A policy brief highlighting concrete recommendations identiedduring the conference.

• Identify possible “Commitments to Action” that Club de Madridand partners may work on throughout 2014 taking forward theproposals of the Conference.
