Michelle Westcott of Ashtabu-la, Ohio announces the engage-ment of her daughter Brandi Jewett of Raeford to Jeremy York of Raeford.

The prospective bride is also the daughter of Edward Jewett Jr. of Jefferson, Ohio. She is the granddaughter of Richard and Judi Grubke of Conneaut, Ohio and Edward and Shelby Jewett of Jefferson, Ohio. She is a

graduate of Knoedler School of Nursing with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The prospective groom is the son of David and Debby York of Charlotte. He holds a culinary arts degree from New Hamp-shire College and is currently a manager at Tripps Restaurant in Fayetteville.

The wedding will be held September 1 at Oak Island.

Jewett engaged to York

CampedCub Scout Pack 434 ended a year of Scouting with a camp-ing outing May 11-12 at Camp Holy Ground in Five Points. Scouts hiked, learned about dangerous plans, swam and visited animals in the camp’s petting zoo. Boy Scouts in Troop 434 helped out by set-ting up equipment, preparing meals and instructing Cub Scouts in fire safety.

Through Support Military Spouses shoebox gift program, 350 Fort Bragg military spouses re-ceived shoeboxes on May 11, 2012, in honor of Military Spouse Day.

“What made this drive special was that the whole community came together,” co-founder Dr. Steven Rumley said. “Each shoebox gift contained items of encouragement that were pampering in nature as well as handwritten notes, and other gifts of appreciation that made the spouses feel supported and encour-aged.”

Diana Schulz wrote, “It feels nice to know that others appreciate the sacrifice that we spouses make. We may not have a uniform or rank, but we hold down the fort at home.”

Lilly Harrison wrote, “I had a great time today and appreciated all the time and effort that everyone put into this to make a special day

Jessie Musquiz wrote, “I loved the shoebox of goodies and thank you letters! I especially loved the tea ball made by the MacPherson Youth Ministries. How did you know I love tea?”

Support Military Spouses, home of Shoeboxes for Military Spouses, is the nation’s only program dedi-cated to collecting and distributing shoebox gifts to military spouses.

Shoeboxes are delivered year round. Supporters of the cause can participate by preparing a shoebox with appropriate gifts, along with a $7.50 donation (tax-deductible check payable to Support Military Spouses) to help cover project costs, and dropping them off at a participat-ing location.

Suggested gifts for military wives include a pocket-sized New Testa-ment, body wash/shower gel, travel-sized fragrance mist and splash, travel-sized bubble bath and soaks, travel-sized fragrant hand sanitizer, small shower sponge, small room fragrance candles, gift card, scarf, bracelet, earrings, jewelry set and sample sized bags of coffee. Sug-gested gifts for military husbands include a pocket-sized New Testa-ment, shower gel, non-breakable mug, sample sized bags of coffee, gift card, sports magazine, cookbook for grilling, chef’s apron, flashlight with batteries, gum and breath mints.

Support Military Spouses ac-knowledges the help and support of all their community partners and sponsors. Penske Truck Rental provided transportation for the

collection and distribution of the shoeboxes. Chick-fil-A served as collection sites, and donated a free sandwich to those who dropped off a shoebox. Time Warner Cable’s Vet Net team provided handwritten notes of encouragement as well as volunteers to help with the inspection process. MacPherson Presbyterian Church provided volunteers, and the youth made gifts, such as key chains and tea balls. Leith Automall donated the use of their facility for shoebox inspections, and Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union served as collection sites. Beasley Broadcast Group provided radio announce-ments throughout the shoebox drive. This generosity ensured that hundreds of Fort Bragg military spouses received encouragement in

According to the Center for Dis-ease Control and Safety, strokes can affect people of all ages and back-grounds. Every 40 seconds, some-one in the United States has a stroke. In 2008 alone, more than 133,000 Americans died from stroke—or one person every four minutes— making it the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.

A stroke, sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when a blockage stops the flow of blood to the brain or when a blood vessel in or around the brain bursts. Although many people think of stroke as a condition that affects only older adults, strokes can and do occur in people of all ages. In fact, nearly a quarter of all strokes occur in people younger than age 65.

Each year, almost 800,000 strokes occur in the United States. Strokes often lead to serious, life-changing complications that include:

• Paralysis or weakness on one side of the body

• Problems with thinking, aware-ness, attention, learning, judgment, and memory

• Problems understanding or forming speech

Charter school Alpha Academy has moved to a new six-acre campus near the Hoke-Cumberland County line and is already open for some students.

Founded in 2000, Alpha Acad-emy earned a School of Distinc-tion rating in the 2010-11 school year and was one of only a few schools in Cumberland County to make Adequate Yearly Progress on end-of-year tests. The school announced plans to move to a new, larger campus near the Hoke County border with Cumberland County. The new campus is open to students in grades 3-8 now and will open to pre-kindergarten through second grade students in fall 2013.

The school serves more than 300 children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Alpha Academy out-grew its two facilities in Fayetteville and plans to move all students to the new site. Administrators seek to expand to include high school education for grades 9-12.
