Social Enterprise Characteristic
• Characteristic of Social Enterprises (Social Eenterprise UK):
• Have a clear social and/or environmental mission set out in their governing documents
• Generate the majority of their income through trade (revenues mainly from goods and services provided, not grants or donations)
• Reinvest the majority of their profits
• Be autonomous of state
• Be majority controlled in the interests of the social mission
• Be accountable and transparent

Aims Of Our Global Social Enterprise Programme
• Our Global Social Enterprise programme supports social enterprises to address social and environmental challenges and improve people’s lives in our communities and societies.
• It promotes positive social change, inclusive growth and sustainable development while also sharing learning.
• Social enterprise builds cultural relations –developing lasting relationships and building trust between business, government and civil society in the UK and globally.

The Global Impact Investment Network (GIIN) annual survey found that USD $15.2 billion was committed to 7,551 impact investments in 2015. Members of GIIN planned to commit 16 per cent more capital than that in 2016.
Social investment in the UK was worth at least £1.5 billion at the end of 2015
USD $200 million committed by the Global Innovation Fund over the next five years (fund includes DFID, USAID, the Omidyar Network, SIDA, DFAT).
High net worth individuals in Asia (excluding Japan) allocating 37.3 per cent of their portfolios to social impact investments.

Four priority strands have been identified as vehicles to deliver the Global Social Enterprise
programme. In addition to these four strands, we conduct activities that cut across and support all
strands of the programme, such as research and study visits.
Government engagement and policy
Support for governments and policy influencers to create an enabling environment
for social enterprises to succeed.
Capacity building
Training and business consultancy to help social entrepreneurs and social enterprises to develop,
grow and scale through training, mentoring, consultancy
and access to investment.
Education systems
Support for social entrepreneurship to become embedded in the curricula and ethos
of schools and higher education institutions. Promotion of strategic research and collaboration
opportunities. Development of SE lesson plans and activities.
International development
Embedding social enterprise approaches in international development programmes.
