NAPOLEONSocial 20-1
THE PEOPLE WERE STILL NOT UNITED.Even with all the struggles that the people had to face, they were still not united. They were in agreement on some points of the revolution, but the terror of the guillotine also divided them (no pun intended).
1. How did napoleon rise to power?
There were many symbols of
French nationalism that were developed
during the revolution.
[2]
Jaques-Louis David:Jaques-Louis David is sometimes referred to as the official
artist of the revolution. He painted the Oath of the Horatii before
the revolution began. It was actually commissioned by louis XVI.
David was a supporter of the revolution so the people of France
felt that the meaning behind the painting supported their cause.
Some people felt that the painting was more powerful in stirring
up the people than any of the tracts of the day.
When the revolution was nearing the end, David felt that
Napoleon was the natural leader for the people. David became
Napoleon’s personal artist (sort of like a modern day campaign
manager). He created the painting Napoleon Crossing The Alps
to support the image of a heroic powerful leader. This image was
recreated five times to be spread around the empire. In reality,
Napoleon rode a donkey over the alps. That would not have been
heroic enough for an image of Napoleon. It would
not have fit with the ideology they were trying
to create.
Oath of the HoratiiThis painting was used to inspire the people to do their duty no matter how difficult it may be.
EARLY PROPAGANDA
David was controlling the
people’s interpretations of
history and visions of the future.
Death of MaratDavid made a martyr out of Marat. The people rallied behind the revolution more after Marat’s death.
The Sabine WomenThis painting was meant to convince the people to stop quarreling and unite once more.
