Youth Experience with Globalization
&
Effects on Individuals and Communities
Children
We have a western perception of childhood. We all see it as simple and carefree. But, we can look at globalization and this
perception changes.
Children in the Workplace
Transnational corps need to be competitive. Children offer a readily available workforce
that will work for less. They do not protest. They are easily exploited. Many people are so impoverished that they
need children to work.
Effects
Obviously this causes lack in literacy, education, and social development.
Subsequently, when these children become adults, they do not have the skills to get away from the life style.
Their kids take their place.
Child Soldiers
The UN has made conscription of children under 15 a war crime.
However, in some countries, children as young a 8 are used as soldiers.
They are often poor orphaned children that join to gain support, food, and shelter.
Globalization and Females
In a positive look, as nations become more globalized, the equality of Females improves.
Let’s look at page 346.
Globalization and Women
Are Female basic rights different from Male basic rights?
Let’s think outside of our own society. What are Gender Roles? Women make up less then 10% of
managements and governmental positions, but they make up 50% of the population.
Chapter 17
Transnational (not businesses, but people!) Globalization has a great effect on the
population of globalized nations. We look around and see dozens of
nationalities. These people are transnational. People that have lived in more then one
country.

Food
People have always modified food. In the 1960’s we had the green revolution,
this isn’t a hippie thing. Farmers abandoned old farming techniques
for technology. Now, we are moving one step nearer with
Biotechnology.
Biotechnology
Changing an organisms DNA. They can put animal DNA into a Plant. There are arguments on both sides for this. Can we think of some!
Genetically Modified Food!Let’s look at page 364
Pros! Cons!

The last major flu pandemic was in 1968.
SARS began in 2003 and quickly spread to 30 countries including CANADA.
Will Avian Flu Be Next?
Diseases like polio and illnesses like the Spanish Flu are forever known as major pandemics in world history.
Will the Bird Flu really be next?
Bird/Avian Flu
First discovered in Southeast Asia in 2003.
Within two years it was being contracted by humans from birds.
Now it has reached everywhere but the Americas
There is no vaccines or known immunities.
Fear is that it will soon be contracted from human to human.
What do you think?
Considering what you have learned today answer the question: Do you think the Bird Flu is going to be our next pandemic?
