Soccer (in Turkish, futbol) is by all means the most popular sport in Turkey. The reasons vary, but some of the reasons might include

huge investments in soccer, massive media coverage, the availability of facilities for

soccer in most parts of Turkey, a lack of investment and

interest in other sports, a lack of facilities for other sports.

Eighteen teams play in the Turkish Super League. This year (2009-2010) there are five teams from İstanbul (Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş, İstanbul B.B., and Kasımpaşa) and three teams from Ankara (Gençlerbirliği, Ankaragücü, and Ankaraspor).

Other teams represent their own cities, like Trabzonspor, Bursaspor, Diyarbakırspor, etc.

The most popular teams have historically been three Istanbul teams: Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş. These three teams have fans and fan

clubs all over Turkey, so they are not only represented in Istanbul but everywhere. The other teams are generally considered to be local teams, whose fans are limited to the city residents. Trabzonspor is one of these teams, which represents the city of Trabzon, and is one of the popular teams in the national league.

Tarihsel olarak Türkiye’nin en popüler takımları İstanbul takımlarıdır: Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş. Fenerbahçe S.K Is one of the most popular teams, which was

officially founded in 1907. The club and the stadium –called Şükrü

Saraçoğlu stadium-is situated in Kadıköy, Istanbul. The Kadıköy area is generally known everywhere to be the home for the Fenerbahçe team.

The stadium is one of the biggest stadiums in Turkey with over 50,000 seats.

Their colors are yellow and navy-blue. The symbol of Fenerbahçe is a canary bird. They have won the national championship 17

times and the national cup four times.

1907 yılında kurulmuştur. Klüp ve Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadyumu İstanbul’un

Kadıköy ilçesindedir. Kadıköy genellikle Fenerbahçe takımının evi olarak bilinir.

Galatasaray S.K. Is another popular Istanbul team, which was founded

in 1905 by the students of Galatasaray high school. The stadium is called Ali Sami Yen, who was also the

founder of the team, and is situated in Mecidiyeköy, Şişli district, Istanbul. The capacity is around 24,000.

It is so far the first and only team from Turkey to win the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

The team has won the national championship 17 times, and the national cup 14 times.

The symbol of the club is a lion. The colors are yellow and red.

Galatasaray S.K. Türkiye’nin diğer en popüler takımlarından

biri. !905 yılında Galatasaray Lisesi öğrencileri tarafından kuruldu.

Stadyum adını, aynı zamanda takımın kurucusu olan Ali Sami Yen’den almıştır, ve İstanbul’un Şişli ilçesine bağlı Mecidiyeköy semtindedir. Kapasitesi 24.000 civarındadır.

Galatasaray şu ana kadar UEFA Kupası ve UEFA Süper Kupasını kazanmış ilk ve tek Türk takımıdır.

Galatasaray 17 kere lig şampiyonluğu ve 14 kere de Türkiye Kupasını kazanmıştır.

Beşiktaş J.K. (Gymnastics Club) Beşiktaş is another popular Istanbul team which was founded

in 1903 as a gymnastics club, including such sports as wrestling, boxing, athletics, etc.

The soccer team gained popularity after the 1910s. The stadium, called İnönü stadium, was established during the

İsmet İnönü era, who was the second president of Turkish republic.

It is situated close to the Bosporus, based in the Beşiktaş district.

The team has won the Turkish national championship 13 times and the national cup eight times.

Their colors are black and white, and the symbol is the black eagle.

Beşiktaş is also known for its fanatic fan club, called Çarşı grup.

Beşiktaş J.K. (Jimnastik Klübü) 1903 yılında bünyesinde güreş, boks, atletizm gibi

sporları da barındıran Beşiktaş Jimnastik Klübü olarak kuruldu.

Futbol takımı 1910’dan sonra popüler oldu. Stadyumu adını, Türkiye’nin ikinci cumhurbaşkanı

olan İsmet İnönü’nden alır. Stadyum İstanbul’ın Beşiktaş ilçesindedir ve

Boğaz’a yakındır. Beşiktaş takımı 13 kere lig şampiyonluğu ve 8 kere

de Türkiye Kupasını kazanmıştır. Renkleri siyah ve beyazdır ve sembolü kara

kartaldır. Beşiktaş aynı zamanda Çarşı Grubu olarak bilinen

fanatik bir taraftar kitlesiyle de biliniyor.
