Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a simple and valuable assessment tool to monitor students’
progress when it comes to phonics and reading. Our Year 1 students at Rose Park PS will
participate in this 5-7 minute test during weeks 5-8 in Term 3 (17August - 11 September). The
Year 1 teachers will administer the individual test, which will provide them with valuable
information about each student’s phonological skills and reading abilities.

IBPYP Update - Year 7 Writing
This semester, the Year 7 cohort has been focusing on the school’s writing goals. We have
created narratives, persuasive texts, poetry, reflections, explanations, scientific reports, and
vignettes. For the first half of Term 2, Year 7 students have individually written about significant
turning points and influential people from Australian history. A few of the topics that were
written about included the White Australia Policy, the Eureka Stockade, and the Stolen
Generation. This writing task has improved student’s writing abilities and research skills.
Here are a few examples of outstanding historical recount mini reflections:
While I was writing my historical recount on the women's suffrage movement, I learnt about
how women had to protest furiously against the gender gap, along with wanting the right
to vote. This event was a major turning point in Australian history, allowing Australia to take
a step closer to gender equality. - Anthony B
While writing my Historical Recount I learned that many people worldwide have deadly
eye diseases and Fred Hollows restored the eyesight of 2 million of them. I now know that
anyone can do anything if they have hope, a dream, a strong passion and determination.
Due to this statement, Fred Hollows changed worldwide history for the better. - Archie B
When I was researching about John Flynn, I learnt about how he dedicated his time to help
save the citizens living in remote areas. His strive and dedication has changed Australia’s
history with creating the world's first air ambulance which is now called The Royal Flying
Doctor Service (RFDS) and is still helping many people’s lives today. - Ella W
As I was writing my historical recount on the White Australian Policy, I learnt about how
prejudiced Australia was towards having a white country and how unfair this law was. I
learnt about the struggles non European men and women went through to enter a safe
Australia. I also learnt about the struggles the Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders
faced. For example, the Aboriginal people were forced to live in the fringes of Australia,
and Aboriginal children were stolen so that they could forget their cultural habits and
adapt to a more ‘white’ lifestyle. - Snehitha S
During writing my historical recount I learnt the struggle that the Aboriginal people
experienced in the Stolen Generation. I also learnt the importance of the national apology
made by Kevin Rudd as well as how terrible the process of stealing children was. - Petey F
When writing my historical recount I wrote about Edith Cowan who was a famous pioneer
of the early 1900 who fought for the welfare and rights of women and children. When in
parliament Edith introduced the equal opportunity legislation which allowed women to
represent people in court and for women to work in professions they had previously not
been allowed to enter, because of this legislation that she introduced she has influenced
contemporary life. - Hannah A
Book Week - Postponed to Term 4
The 2020 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week theme is ‘Curious Creatures, Wild
Minds’. Book Week is usually held during Term 3, however due to COVID-19 restrictions, this
event has been rescheduled to 19-23 October (Week 2, Term 4). The Scholastic Book Fair will
