Thank you to Ms Rowlings for her outstanding organisation of the assembly. PARKING Parent parking continues to be a safety concern, particularly for the afternoon pick up. Yesterday afternoon there were cars parked in front of our neighbours on the nature strip while others were in the school grounds. While I understand that everyone wants to park as close as possible to the school it is just not possible for this to occur. As well, the excuse that it is OK to park on school grounds because “I’m just here for 5 minutes to pick up my child”, is not in any way acceptable. It is time that everyone considered student safety a priority rather than an inconvenience. ZONE SWIMMING Congratulations to Jaida Muscat who represented our school at the Horsley Zone Swimming Championships on Monday. Jaida competed in both the freestyle and backstroke events with distinction. Well done Jaida!

Dear Parents and Caregivers, STUDENT LEADER INDUCTION ASSEMBLY Our annual induction assembly for our School Captains, Prefects, House Captains and Library Monitors was once again a wonderful occasion and my congratulations go to all the students and families involved.

SCHOOL SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY PROGRAM The School Swimming and Water Safety Program started this week at the Fin Aquatics and Recreational Centre. We’ve had hot days and rainy days, but no matter what the weather, the program will go ahead. The really good news that I have been told is that some of our students are already making amazing improvement. Thank you to the staff for making this worthwhile program possible. Ms Rowlings did a wonderful job as co-ordinator and was well supported by Mrs Bennett in the office. Thank you as well to Mrs Papadatos, Mr Kirby, Mrs Menna, Miss Reddy, Miss Daniele and Mrs Maroki who are escorting, supervising and/or instructing our students each day. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE On Friday 20 March 2020 Smithfield West will be one of over 6,000 schools participating in the ninth annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. It is an opportunity for our community to reject bullying and cyberbullying and help keep young Australians safe. The theme for this year Take action together.

The following websites include resources that have been developed by the Government to empower parents to protect children and prepare them to be resilient, responsible and responsible adults. I hope you find them useful.

• www.esafety.gov.au – resources that promote online safety including tackling image-based abuse and a complaints service for young Australians who experience serious cyberbullying

• www.studentwellbeinghub.edu.au – support for students, parents and teachers to create a learning environment that promotes student wellbeing and the development of respectful relationships

• www.bullyingnoway.gov.au – education and advice for kids, parents and schools on how to combat and respond to bullying.

ALLERGIES AND HEALTH PLANS If your child has a medical condition that the school is not aware of, it is of the utmost importance that you make contact with the school so that a medical plan can be developed. For example, if your child is asthmatic, has an allergy or regularly takes medication for an illness, then it is important for the school to be made aware of this. Student safety is our number one concern. SPECIAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (SRE) SRE classes commenced last Thursday and students have been grouped in accordance with the information previously supplied by parents/carers. Should you wish to change your child’s SRE option, this must be done in writing to the Principal. In 2020, we have authorised clergy and religious teachers providing instruction to our Catholic, Anglican/Baptist and Islamic groups. COURT ORDERS If there have been changes to your family situation since last year and specific orders are now in place, then I ask that you inform the school immediately and provide copies of any legal documents to ensure that correct procedures are actioned. ATTENDANCE TIP Even taking a small amount of time out of school can be a problem and your child might fall behind with work and be unable to catch up. Their friendships can suffer and may lead to them having difficulty maintaining positive relationships with their peers. A child with a good school record of attendance is setting themselves up for a better future once he/she leaves school. It only takes 3 or 4 days off per term to start seriously affecting your child’s education. 8 days absence or more per term and they fall below 85% attendance. This means they are unable to reach their full potential and their future life choices become far more limited. VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS Our school generously provides workbooks, stationery and numerous other resources to support your child’s educational experiences. To support the school, we ask that parents contribute to the cost of schooling through payment of a school contribution. These contributions are voluntary and kept to an absolute minimum. Contributions have not been raised this year and have been set at: Individual student rate $50.00 Family rate $80.00

READING WITH YOUR YOUNG CHILD You can support your child in learning to read by reading to your child for up to half an hour every day using a story book. Here are some helpful hints.

1. Set the scene Before you read the story, tell your child the title of the book and a bit about it. Try to relate it to your child’s own experiences, if you can. If it is about dogs, talk about a dog they know. You can also discuss what might happen in the story. 2. Read the book Read the story in a lively way with lots of expression. If you come across unfamiliar words, stop and tell your child what they mean. This improves your child’s vocabulary and helps them to understand the whole story. During the week, you might also like to remind your child of some of the new words from the story book and relate them to your everyday life. 3. Recalling the story After reading the book, ask your child questions about the story. For example, “What happened at the beginning of the story?” or “What happened at the end of the story?”. If they can’t remember, tell them. You might also want to try asking different types of questions that require more than a yes or no answer. For example, “Why do you think the little green dragon was so sad?” These sorts of questions help to develop your child’s language skills. You don’t need to read a different book for every session; in fact, rereading the same book several times allows the child to become familiar with the story and helps them to learn new vocabulary. Finally, being patient and enthusiastic will make reading together a much more positive experience for both you and your child.

FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOU CHILD WHEN THEY COME HOME FROM SCHOOL 1. If I called your teacher tonight what would she tell me about you? 2. How did you help somebody today? 3. How did somebody help you today? 4. Tell me one thing that you learned today? 5. When were you the happiest today? Stephen Gray Principal ASSEMBLY AWARD RECIPIENTS
