Congratulations to the RCCS Parents, Providers and Program Committee
Volunteers!
Presented by the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County, the Volunteer Recognition Awards recognize
outstanding Sonoma County Nonprofits and the committed individuals who serve them. A panel of judges convened by the Volunteer Center evaluates nominations and selects winners.
The Diversity Award is presented to an exceptional individual or team of
volunteers bringing services/programs to underserved populations—those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged by language, disability, cultural or economic hardship. A cash prize is awarded to the nominee(s)’ designated non-profit organization.
This year the volunteer Parents, Providers and Program Committee was nominated
for, and was chosen to receive, the Diversity Award.
The Parents, Providers, and Program (PPP) Committee was formed in 2006 in
an effort to involve West County parents and child care providers in program and resources development for the benefit of children living in west Sonoma County. There are about thirty active families in this group. The children are also participants, working alongside parents in their fundraising and advocacy efforts.
The members of this volunteer group meet monthly to share a meal while discussing issues that effect
children in west Sonoma County. They meet with community leaders, developing parent advocacy and leadership skills. A group of 30 parents and children went to Sacramento in July for the “Un-Fair Rally” to advocate for keeping children’s programs in the State budget. They fundraise to support programs and
events that address solutions to pinpointed community needs. The committee members are primarily Spanish-speaking parents, with preschool to teenage children at home. They are very involved in the rural Russian River communities and schools targeting the development and funding of activities and resources that assist young English language learners succeed and be healthy and safe.
The PPP Committee members have been active participants and fundraisers in the Human Race and
food booths at River community events. Money raised has gone to provide swim lessons for children and their parents (mostly Latino) who live along the Russian River. Water safety for Latino families was an issue that the PPP parents targeted to address. Funds raised have also helped keep kinder gym going, provided books for the Young Readers program, and bought car safety seats. Through fundraising and volunteering in the office and learning to advocate for children’s program support, these volunteers have learned that they can make a difference for the good in their communities. CONGRATULATIONS!!

Seasonal Flu Information for Schools & Childcare Providers Educators and staff can help slow the spread of colds and flu. On this page, you will find more information on preventing the flu, as well as, materials and tools for schools.
Each year an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of flu-related complications. Influenza causes more hospitalizations among young children than any other vaccine-preventable disease. The single best way to protect against seasonal flu and its potential severe complications is for children to get a seasonal influenza vaccine each year. Flu vaccination is recommended for all children aged 6 months and older. Making healthy choices at school and at home can help prevent the flu and spreading flu to others.
Ask children to:• Cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they
cough or sneeze—have them throw the tissue away after they use it.
• Wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. If water is not near, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
How Germs SpreadThe main way that illnesses like colds and flu are spread is from person to person in respiratory droplets of coughs and sneezes. This is called “droplet spread.”
This can happen when droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air and are deposited on the mouth or nose of people nearby. Sometimes germs also can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk and then touches his or her own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands. We know that some viruses and bacteria can live 2 hours or longer on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks.
How to Stop the Spread of Germs In a nutshell: • Take care to cover your mouth and nose • Clean your hands often • Remind your children to practice healthy habits, too • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing• Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away.
Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.
The “Happy Birthday” song helps keep your hands clean? Not exactly. Yet we recommend that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. That’s about the same time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice!
Stop the Spread of Germs in Schools,Fast Facts • Approximately 1/5 of the U.S. population attends or works in schools. (U.S. Dept of Ed, 1999). • Some viruses and bacteria can live from 20 minutes up to 2 hours or more on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks. (Ansari, 1988; Scott and Bloomfield, 1989) • Nearly 22 million school days are lost annually due to the common cold alone. (CDC, 1996) • Addressing the spread of germs in schools is essential to the health of our youth, our schools, and our nation. • Students need to get plenty of sleep and physical activity, drink water, and eat good food to help them stay healthy in the winter and all year.
What is TrustLine?
TrustLine is California’s registry of in-home child care providers, tutors and in-home counselors who have passed a background screening. It was created by the California Legislature in 1987 and is a powerful resource for parents hiring a nanny or baby-sitter. All caregivers listed with TrustLine have been cleared through a fingerprint check of records at the California Department of Justice. This means they have no disqualifying criminal convictions or substantiated child abuse reports in California. TrustLine is administered by the California Department of Social Services and the non-profit Child Care Resource and Referral Network.

Alcohol-Based Hand Wipes and Gel Sanitizers Work TooWhen soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. You can find them in most supermarkets and drugstores. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn’t need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.*

Gripe Estacional Información para Proveedores de Cuidado de Niños y Escuelas de Educadores y el personal puede ayudar a frenar la propagación de los resfriados y la gripe. For Affordable Health Insurance: Healthy Kids Sonoma County 1-800-427-8982Every child should have health coverage. This program connects you with a Certified Application Assistant near you who can determine which low-cost insurance program might be right for your child and help you complete the application process.
For Free Medical, Dental, or Pharmacy Services: Kids’ Net 707-544-KNET or 707-544-5638Has your child gone without needed medical care because of lack of insurance? If your child needs to see a doctor or dentist right away due to pain or illness, there is help. Children without insurance or a regular place to get healthcare can be connected with a community clinic or to one of the many volunteer doctors, dentist or pharmacies in Sonoma County.
For Free Check-Ups: CHDP 1-800-427-8982Children should be seen for regular well-checkups, whether they have insurance or not. The Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) pro-gram pays for health assessments and services for low-income children and youth. CHDP also assists families with scheduling medical appoint-ments, transportation, and getting diagnostic and treatment services.

What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay (cavities and/or rotted teeth) is caused by bacteria on the tooth. The condition is worsened when
a child’s teeth are exposed to sugary liquids, formula, soda, sports drinks, fruit juices or milk for a period of time. Putting a baby to bed with a bottle, or giving her a juice-filled sippy cup is a major culprit.
Tooth decay causes discomfort and makes it difficult for your child to chew food, sleep, pay attention in class
and at home. Untreated tooth decay on baby teeth can cause serious damage to the permanent (adult) teeth. It’s important that you brush and floss your child’s teeth twice a day.
