1 Introduction
1.1 Safety InstructionsThe hardware of WIBU-SYSTEMS AG serves to protect and license digital products and has been developed, manufacturedand inspected in accordance with state-of-the-art technology and recognized technical safety rules and regulations. For further information on hardware certificates see the respective documents to be downloaded at the website of Wibu-Systems (http://www.wibu.com/en/certificates.html). Before you use the hardware please observe the following safety instructions:
If you follow the instructions regarding safety as described in this manual, the hardware will, in the normal case, neithercause personal injury nor damage to machinery and equipment. Connect the hardware only to matching intendedinterfaces. The use for other purposes, opening or own repair of the hardware may lead to damages of the product andits suroundings.Modifying the hardware affects the product safety. Caution: risk of injury!The hardware may warm up during operation - which is a normal operational parameter. Keep the hardware away from humidity and avoid strong vibration, dust, heat, and direct sunlight, in order to preventoperational interferenceDepending on the used operating system the detection of the hardware device may take some seconds. 2 Overview - SmartShelter PDF
Wibu-Systems Document ProtectionInformation is increasingly shared using PDF documents. Sm artShelter PDF by Wibu-Systems features a documentprotection solution that prevents unauthorized redistribution of documents containing confidential information. Youencrypt a single PDF document using the secure Sm artShelter tools. Sm artShelter then uses our hardware based solutions -Cm Dongle and W ibuKey - or the software-based solution Cm ActLicense to encrypt the document. Unlike the standard PDF password-protection scheme, PDF files protected with Sm artShelter require a hardware device(Cm Dongle or W ibuKey) or a Cm ActLicense file for authentication. This means that even if the document is accidentallyreleased to the public it will be impossible to read without the appropriate hardware security device or license file.Protecting your documents with Sm artShelter can be done completely from within the Acrobat environment.When used internally, Sm artShelter PDF protects business-critical documents, e.g. from research and development, ormanagement board information. Sm artShelter PDF ensures that only authorized persons are able to open these documents.But you should also consider Sm artShelter PDF for secure marketing of digital products. For example, in the case of coursedocuments or technical documentation where access is to be granted only to specific participants or authorized commercialpartners. Or when selling digital information, e.g. as e-book, e-newspaper, or e-articles. With the appropriate programming using CodeM eter or W ibuKey you decide who has access, when, to which information,how often or how long. Because only users with a valid license entry in their Cm Dongle, W ibuBox, or Cm ActLicensecontainer are able to open and read the documents you encrypted.
Sm artShelter PDF covers two plug-in components: Sm artShelter PDF Author for the information distributor or developer(licensor) and Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader for the end-user (licensee).

2.1 Background
Security by strong passwords and 128 bit AES EncryptionDocuments protected by passwords can be cracked by several ways. Most commonly, the password is shared or guessed.People frequently make their passwords short and easy to remember. Hackers can crack short passwords of 6-8 charactersby a "brute force" attempt, where they try every possible password. Longer, randomly-generated passwords are far moredifficult to attack, but also hard to remember. Fortunately, Sm artShelter uses long, random passwords (featuring 128-bitAES encryption) but you don't have to remember them.
Open documents only with matching license entriesSm artShelter passwords are automatically generated by the Cm Dongle, W ibuBox, or the Cm ActLicense container on the flywhen the PDF document is opened. In order to open a protected PDF document a Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader plug-in isrequired. The user opens the document as usual with Adobe Reader. If a Cm Dongle, W ibuBox, or Cm ActLicense licensecontainer with a matching license entry is found, the PDF document is decrypted and displayed in Adobe Reader. When thereader has no Cm Dongle, W ibuBox, or Cm ActLicense container, a password challenge dialog opens.

3 SmartShelter PDF Reader
The reader needs the Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader component to be able to open protected PDF documents.Sm artShelter PDF is installed as plug-in integrated into Adobe Reader.The reader opens the PDF document as usual with Adobe Reader. When a Cm Dongle, a W ibuBox or a Cm ActLicenselicense container with a matching license entry is found, the PDF document can be accessed. If no Cm Dongle, W ibuBox ora Cm ActLicense license container is available to the reader, alternatively a password challenge dialog opens.
3.1 InstallationThe following sections describe the installation of Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader.
3.1.1 Requirements
Before installing Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader, please note the following:Windows:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or 8 must be installed including the latest Service Pack.Adobe Reader versions 8, 9, 10 or 11 are supported; please ensure that the reader is current with any updatesissued by Adobe.
Mac:Mac OS X Version 10.6 or newer is required.Adobe Reader versions 8, 9, 10 or 11 are required including the latest updates.
The latest Runtime Kit of CodeM eter® or W ibuKey should be installed. The latest version you find in the user areas of ourwebsite at www.wibu.com/en/downloads-user-software.html.A matching CodeM eter® Cm Container or a W ibuBox should be connected to the PC or accessible on a network.
3.1.2 Installation on Windows
In order to installSm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader, please proceed as follows:
1. Close Adobe Reader if open.
2. Start the installation program by double-clicking the SmashPDFRdr.exe file in the Windows Explorer.
3. Follow installation wizard instructions.
4. Check for the proper installation of the Sm artShelter PDF plug-in by opening the "Help | About Third-Party Plug-Ins |SmartShelter PDF" menu item.
3.1.2.1 Trouble Shooting
Two common issues with the installation are explained below. If you cannot install the plug-in, please check both thesecommon problems. If you still cannot install the plug-in, contact Wibu-Systems technical support.While update installing to Version 11.11 on Windows XP eventually before a reboot a hort error message displays which ishowever uncritical.
3.1.2.11 Certified Plug-Ins
If the Adobe Reader "Help | About Third-Party Plug-Ins | SmartShelter PDF" menu item does not display, please check to see ifyour installation of Adobe Reader loads 'certified' plug-ins only. Check this using the "Edit | Preference | Startup" menu item.In the section "Startup" deactivate the option "Use only certified plug-ins". Then restart Adobe Reader.
3.1.2.12 Duplicate Installation
If, on starting Adobe Reader you see the error message: "There was an error while loading the plug-in'SmashPDFRdr.api'. Two plug-ins attempting to register with the same name." displays, you mayhave started two instances of the Sm artShelter PDF installation program. In this case please close Adobe Acrobat , anduninstall one of the Sm artShelter PDF instances using the "Start | Settings | System Control | Software" navigation. Then restartAdobe Reader.

3.1.3 Installation on Mac OS X
Installing Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader Plug-In on Mac OS X coversCopying the directorySmashPdfRdr.acroplugin into the Acrobat program directory "Plug-Ins".
3.1.3.1 Copy Installation
In order to install Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader plug-in on the Mac, please proceed as follows:1. Close Adobe Reader if open.
Double-click the SmashPdfRdr_<Version>.dmg disk image. The drive SmashPdf will be installed. It contains the Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader plug-in and the relateddocumentation.

2. Click on the docked Adobe Reader icon and open the context menu. Use the "Show in Finder" menu item to locate the Adobe Reader installation location.If no Adobe Reader icon is displayed in the dock, please navigate to the Adobe Reader root directory.

3. Now the Adobe Reader application should be displayed in the Finder. Select the Adobe Reader application and open the context menu. select the "Show Package Contents" menu item.

The directory opens.4. Find the directory "Plug-Ins".
Copy the directory SmashPdfRdr.acroplugin to the application sub-directory "Plug-Ins".

Here you are also able to remove the Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader plug-in.
5. Start Adobe Reader and check for an existing new "Adobe Reader | About Third-Party Plug-Ins | SmartShelter PDF" menuitem:

6. Now you are able to use Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader.
3.1.4 Information Dialog
The Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader information dialog displays current installation information. This information helps thesupport team of Wibu-Systems to assist you in solving any future troubles when using Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader.In order to display this dialog, open the "Help | About Third Party Plug-Ins | SmartShelter PDF" menu item.

3.2 Open a protected documentIn order to open a PDF document protected with Sm artShelter PDF, please proceed as follows:1. Double click the Sm artShelter PDF protected document.
Alternatively, you may also use the Adobe Reader "File Open" menu item.
If a Cm Dongle or W ibuBox with a matching entry is not connected to the PC, or you do not have a matchingCm ActLicense license container, the following message displays:

Subsequently you are prompted to type in the password for opening the document. In order to open the documentcontact the author of the document, and ask for an appropriate programmed W ibuBox/Cm Dongle/Cm ActLicensecontainer, or the password for this document.
Sm artShelter PDF protected documents can also be opened using a browser, if the Adobe Reader-Plugin is installed.
If you use Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader Version 10 and higher, please note that the document does notopen.This due to enhanced security which provides a way to specify locations for trusted content. These privilegedlocations can be single files, folders, or host domains (root URLs). Content that resides in a privileged location istrusted. For example, enhanced security normally blocks PDFs from loading data from unknown websites. If you addthe data’s origin (its host domain) to your list of privileged locations, Acrobat and Reader allow loading the data. Fordetails, see the Enhanced Security document at www.adobe.com/go/learn_acr_appsecurity_en.Please proceed as follows:
Select "Edit > Preferences" (Windows) or Acrobat/Adobe Reader > "Preferences" (Mac OS).From the Categories on the left, select "Security (Enhanced)".Select the "Enable Enhanced Security" option.Specify a list of locations in the "Privileged Locations" section, and then click "OK".
To allow data to load from a website, enter the name of the root URL. To trust files from secure connections only,select Secure Connections Only (https:).
3.3 Trouble Shooting
If an encrypted PDF document is opened by a hyperlink using a web browser, the Adobe Reader password dialogdisplays, even when a matching Cm Dongle or W ibuBox is connected to the PC, or a matching Cm ActLicensecontainer exists.This is a known behaviour of Acrobat Reader and cannot be altered. For a work-around, first save the PDF file toyour hard drive, and then open it using the Windows Explorer or Finder.
If you should you open a protected document which has been generated with a version of Sm artShelter PDF newer thanthe one installed on your PC, the following error message displays:

You can always get the latest version of Sm artShelter 11.15 PDF Reader on our download page at (www.wibu.com/en/downloads-user-software.html).If you open a protected PDF document, and do not have the CodeM eter or W ibuKey Runtime Kit installed, the followingerror message displays:

In order to access a Cm Dongle, W ibuBox, or a Cm ActLicense container the appropriate version of the CodeM eter orW ibuKey Runtime Kit for your operating system must be installed. The latest version of the CodeM eter/W ibuKey RuntimeKit is available free of charge on from our download page of at (www.wibu.com/en/downloads-user-software.html).Please download the Runtime Kit, install it, and restart Adobe Reader.
