Who? … How? Smartpen Demo
Example: Taking notes during a lecture
Note: the pen does not speak aloud what was written in ink. Rather, the pen will play back the audio that was recorded.
Uses For the Smartpen
• Written expression
– Composing
– Mechanical
• Reading
• Independent work
• Learning
– Enhance or compensate
• http://www.livescribe.com/education/learning.html
Benefits
• Use working memory for listening and processing the lecture/information
– Note taking during a lecture requires high cognitive effort, demanding working memory be used for note taking rather than processing lecture information
• Increases generative processing
– Cross-topical connections & integrated content comprehension
• Taking notes on a computer takes twice as long on average than handwriting
• Smartpen allows capture and review of terminology, science and mathematical notations, and complex chains of ideas
• Lecture reviewing increases scores on recall tests
• Listening is slower process than reading
– Smartpen provides: accelerated lecture playback and selective lecture review
