Students can practice dialogues in pairs and self-evaluate using a rubric and the LiveScribe recordings. The instructor can use the same rubric to evaluate. The instructor and students can compare assessments. Over time, students can review recordings for growth in fluency and accuracy.

Using the LiveScribe pen to collect information for writing assignments. Pens are especially helpful in interviewing and taking notes.

The LiveScribe pen is a small, inexpensive, easily learned assistive technology.  The College STAR LiveScribe Pirate CREWS crew is exploring ways to use the LiveScribe pen to enhance teaching and learning in multiple venues.  In this presentation, the group shares  uses of the pen: (a) in interviewing for composition assignments in a freshman composition class, (b) in developing fluency and accuracy in foreign language dialogues in a Spanish class, (c) in notetaking in a DSS COAD 1000 class, and (d) in increasing notetaking skills in a high school class for high functioning Aspergers clients.

Students:•Students can take notes in a way that lets them listen more attentively in class •Reinforces learning by providing students the ability to playback content for missed information and review•Students with writing difficulty can dictate writing assignments using minimal writing and then have writing transcribed to written form for review and correction using “MyScript”•Writers are not penalized for their inability to write quickly•Minimizes stress/anxiety about notetaking or trying to understand everything the first time heard

Faculty:•Faculty can dictate feedback with minimal writing and provide it to students•Faculty can use to make simple podcasts for reinforcing directions, content•Faculty can use for evaluating oral presentation (accuracy, fluency, etc.) by having students submit recordings of assignments with or without a self-assessment

Leonard Trujillo in Occupational Therapy and his students are studying how the LiveScribe pen can be used with students with significant learning differences to write notes beginning with squiggles and moving to paragraphs, etc.

Will the use of the LiveScribe pen help students with disabilities improve notetaking and/or study habits?

Will the use of the LiveScribe pen impact the accuracy and fluency of student dialogues in a foreign language class?

Will the use of the LiveScribe pen increase the quality of collected data and written assignments in a composition class?
