Expectation Drives Realization

He who does not expect a million readers, should not write a line.- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe - (1749 – 1832)

According to Goethe’s quote, if we are not planning to do something in a big way, we shouldn’t do it at all. This idea is very challenging for many of us because many times we have been taught not to expect big successes in life. So we make comments like: “I’m going to write this little book” or “start this little business.” We apply for jobs that we can easily get even though they are not the ones we truly want. We believe that if we lower our expectations then we can avoid the disappointment of failure and increase our chances of success. But what we are really doing is setting a limit on what we will achieve. When we have low expectations, we often surround ourselves with like-minded people who support our limited thinking. Instead of associating with people who think small, we should instead ask ourselves what is it that keeps us from

thinking larger. Is it fear? Is it lack of faith? Is it low self-esteem? It could be any one of these factors … or a host of others.Do we think we deserve millions of readers, millions of customers, and/or millions of dollars? Do we think we deserve an exceptional relationship, a great job, a beautiful home, and truly supportive friends? If we believe we deserve all these things, then we need to expect to have them. When we expect great things, we begin to operate at a different level. For example, the energy and effort you put into searching for an average job will be different than what you expend when you are looking for a highly coveted one. The energy and effort you put into a business that you think will eventually be worth thousands of dollars will be different than what you will do for one you believe will be worth millions. Likewise, the energy and effort you put into writing a book that will reach a few hundred readers is quite different than what you will do when you imagine your work will be a best seller and be read by millions. So when you are making plans and setting goals, think big, think bold, and think brilliant. By doing so, you set the stage for expectation. Expectation sets the stage for action. And action sets the stage for realization.Ambitious goals and plans reflect high expectations. Are yours ambitious? Do they stretch you beyond your comfort zone? To help you make that determination, ask yourself the following questions:

Page 5: Smarter Every Day Magazine - Vol 2 Issue 1

Smarter Every Day Magazine Vol 2 Issue 1

1) Are my goals difficult to achieve?2) Will my goals require additional learning?3) Will I have to ask others for help or assistance?4) Do I feel a sense of trepidation?5) When I achieve my goals, will I have a tremendous sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment?

If you answered “yes” to all or most of these questions, you have ambitious goals. If not, I challenge you to consider revising your goals to ones that will demand more of you, ones that will force you to reach outside of your comfort zone, ones through which you will grow and develop your skills, abilities, and talents. Those types of goals require us to raise our expectations of ourselves. When we do that we start a journey that can take us to our millions of readers, millions of dollars, millions of customers, or millions of moments of personal satisfaction and ultimately to the tremendous success we expected.

How To Create A Successful Life

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

These words from Proverbs 29:18 are powerful and have important meaning to individuals who desire to build a successful life. The secret to real success is to develop a focused vision of what type of life one wishes to create. There has to be a core focus to bring clarity to the vision. Focus brings clarity and clarity moves you to the forefront giving you a powerful platform on which to build your life. Here are five steps you can use to examine how to position yourself for greater success.Determine Your Vision Ask yourself three questions: Where am I positioned today? What kind of person do I want to become? What must I do to fill the gap? By answering these, you dramatically improve your ability to achieve whatever destination you choose. You will have determined your true focus and vision for

the future. It’s Time For Action It’s not sufficient to just develop a vision. We must act on that vision. And, all our actions should be aligned with the achievement of our vision. If we fill our time with misaligned activities that cannot move our life forward, we will never achieve our vision. Simply put, if it doesn’t support the vision, it should not be done. It’s a tough but necessary discipline all successful people employ.Commit To Excellence A half-hearted effort pays very little dividends. Consider the advice of Vince Lombardi, legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, who said, “The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.” The stronger your commitment to excellence in every phase of your life, the stronger you position yourself for success and the more you separate yourself from the pack. Learn To Solve Problems Use every setback as a lesson learned. Break it down into its smallest component and learn how to analyze the bits of information gathered. Reflect, adjust and introduce new actions. Test new ideas until you discover the best ones to use. Constantly adjust and correct your course and soon your problems will turn into opportunities.Develop A Passion We must have a passion for wanting success. Commit to the process of building the kind of life you want. This process is a long-term commitment that demands unrelenting attention. Where there is no vision, the people perish—powerful words for powerful people.

However, they are meaningless words to those who are blind to the opportunities of life. What type of person are you?

Happy Summer! Time to enjoy that well-earned vacation. Leave home or work relaxed and organized. Here's how: Good-bye procrastination, hello accomplishment! Begin with a plan for the day. Make a to-do-list, prioritize & schedule. Break tasks into manageable pieces. Sooner is better than later, take care of the little things in a timely manner to prevent them from becoming overwhelming.

TimeHealthy tip: Eat breakfast- it's the most important meal of the day. A healthy breakfast will help you start your day energized. Lunch tip- don't eat on the run or at your desk. Significance

One of my good friends is a chiropractor that I see often for both professional appointments and just to drop in on for personal visits. A few years ago I noticed how he approached his patients. He would shake their hand, then maybe a side hug, rub on the shoulder, pat on the arm or a combination of some or all. After seeing this behavior go on I decided to ask him what it was about. His answer was very simple, “I try to give my patients five good touches before I go to work on them.”As I left his office that day, I started thinking about what he was really doing. He was adding a personal touch, making them feel special. Adding Significance. I began to look at what I did on a daily basis and how I could add this approach to my sales career. So many times, we sales professionals are looking to the next deal. Have you purchased something and felt like the person who helped you did not care about anything but getting you to the cash register? This is at the least annoying and

at the worst creates ill feelings towards the sales person and company and you could potentially lose any chance of the customer returning. So the question is, how do you add significance to those you come contact with? Here are a few suggestions (there are many, many more):· Tell them what they mean to you and your organization.· Reach out to them “just because” not to sell them anything. You will be pleasantly surprised how this will actually move a potential sale/deal forward.· Remember your last conversations and build on them. Don’t ask questions they have already given you the answers to.· Become a partner with them to help them solve a problem. When you make this part of your routine, you not only make others feel significant, you grow a relationship of trust that supersedes any product or service. Guess what else I learned as I practiced the 5 touch approach? I could also apply this to my personal life, my speaking career, etc. Everyone wants to feel significant, set yourself apart by being the one who gives this to them.

Whaddaya Think Coach?

Question: What do Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Merryl Streep, Chipper Jones, Peyton Manning, Robert DeNiro, Cher, Donald Trump, Al Pacino, Bill Gates, and Andrea Boccelli all have in common?Answer: They all have coaches, mentors and advisors.

Were it not for that, those people I just listed would not be famous today.Throughout history, successful people, no matter what their field of endeavor, have realized the importance of coaching and mentoring.Intelligent people know they can’t get to where they want to be by themselves. Top professionals seek out guidance from trusted advisers. They also make it a point to learn something from everyone they come in contact with. And they use that information to help themselves achieve a higher level success and wealth. If you are a business owner…or an employee…you need to seek out trusted people (i.e. role models) who have already done what YOU seek to do.

Whether your goal is to build a successful business, or work your way up within one, you need to study successful people and model their behaviors. One thing I have found over the years is that truly successful people are also grateful people. They didn’t arrive at where they are by themselves. They were coached, guided and mentored along the way. And, almost without exception, they are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with others. They realize what Ralph Waldo Emerson referred to as, “The Law Of Compensation”. The more you give, the more you get in return. And the more you get in return, the more you give back.I once heard someone say that the difference between a rich man and a broke man is this: A rich man seeks to learn everything he can from everyone he comes in contact with. A broke man isn’t interested in learning anything from anybody…because he already knows everything there is to know!Fact: If you want to be successful, you need to do what successful people do…and you will succeed. If you want to fail, just do what failures do…and you will fail also.My point is: If you own a business, or if you work for a business, you are not alone…so don’t pretend to be. You need to constantly seek out the advice and

guidance of successful people who have been there/done that…and who are eager to help YOU go there and do it too!
