TOPIC OVERVIEW _

-The future of lighting design in the world of IoT - by Martin Klaasen

world of the IoT will impact on the way we design with light and how it may change the role of the lighting designer and shape the future of smart buildings. One thing is for sure, there are many new and exciting smart IoT features and services that can now be incorporated into lighting. Say hello to the Lighting Design of Things LDoT. The world of

lighting design is transitioning from being solely focused on traditional architectural lighting design to incorporating the smart features of the IoT as an integral part of the light fixture to create intelligent lighting controls, beacon networks, facilitate way finding, understand space utilisation and people movements through data analytics as well as monitoring performance and apply predictive maintenance. In his presentation Martin will lead you through the various new value propositions that can now be integrated into smart building lighting concepts.

Dr. Lal Jayamaha

Buildings account for a significant percentage of energy consumption in many countries. However, based on past experience, the energy consumption of buildings can be reduced by 20 to 30% through optimisation of the design and operation of HVAC systems. Many modern commercial buildings are now designed and built to be Smart Buildings by incorporating sophisticated controls systems with artificial intelligence capabilities to optimise their HVAC systems. The paper will cover the aspects that need to be covered from the initial concept design stage to the detail design followed by the construction phase and building operations to ensure the energy efficiency of a Building HVAC system. A case study of a large size mixed development project in Malaysia which underwent such a process will be highlighted during the presentation.

Internet of Things in Buildings (BIoT): How IoT is Enabling Intelligent Buildings

Buildings are talking, but are we listening? Indeed, buildings are no longer just mere structures but

that can communicate how efficient it is, or how underperforming it had been. New means of technology and precisely, the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way buildings are looked upon, fuelled by the power of data that provides insights into their performance so that greater value could be generated across the building lifecycle - from design and construction to operation and maintenance.

Taking advantage of the building data would thus require analytical expertise coupled with domain know-how and engineering finesse. As the Building Internet of Things (BIoT) begin to mature, the focus is also shifting from technology to outcomes, where building automation & controls companies will be increasingly challenged to adapt their offerings and business models to delivering complete BIoT solutions and answers to address the pain points of building owners, occupiers and enterprise managers.

With IoT having transformative effects on smart building automation and control, the opportunities are now abundant when it comes to improving the efficiency of buildings, raising employee productivity, and also stimulating the development of innovative services. Connecting Smart Buildings has become the first step to transforming current cities into Smart Cities, since globally, buildings account for 40% energy consumption. Therefore, providing building owners and users with new levels of transparency and creating data-driven insight that would creatively impact an people, technology and services, will be the means to an end in achieving a series of smart buildings for the ultimate Smart City.

Smart Building: Towards Healthy Environment/

by Prabodh K Seth

The talk will cover the issues of IAQ & EMS, current usages of technology, especially Intelligent Efficiency, impact of IoT in Energy Management and Indoor Air Quality Management, the challenges faced and showcase an example of Intelligent Efficiency.

Integrated human dwelling and activity has become the lifestyle construction impetus of the 4th Industrial Revolution. As larger and larger integrated indoor structures, and even entire cities are developed, air quality management, including thermal comfort, is playing a bigger role in ensuring productivity & overall human psyche. What is our role in this impetus and how can we push forward the agenda for better management. IoT & Artificial Intelligence makes it possible. Can we build such intelligence though?

Furthermore, how do we embark energy management if we continue to favour device-based approaches over Intelligent Efficiency. What are challenges Intelligent Efficiency face and how do we overcome them. We will also touch on why the industry has difficulty in adoption due to the commercial and financial eco-systems.

We will explore these questions and showcase an advanced automated, autonomous thermal profile management solution known today for an efficient and WOHI system that will disrupt the entire air conditioning industry.

ACT NOW “We, now, are all smart. Even if we don’t believe ourselves to be so, we have access to the technology that makes us so. Smart people make smart buildings. More than that, however, smart people expect buildings to be smart; so do companies, occupiers, regulators, governments, and stakeholders.

We are collectively no longer working towards the future; we are in it. It’s time – long overdue perhaps – that the buildings in which we live and work reflect a ‘future now’ view of the world. We have the technology to make buildings smart; effectively, we no longer have the choice, either commercially or ethically, not to do so.”
