Session Outline

This activity is a good follow on after your pupils have leant: Outdoor Skills: Mini Lean-to Shelter & a good pre-requisite to Large Lean-to Shelters.

• Discuss what we need in order to survive? (water, air, food and shelter)

• What different types of houses and shelters can they name/ describe? How are they suited to their environments? (e.g. igloos made of ice, tipis have a gap at the tops to allow smoke from fires to escape, etc). Explain that lean-to shelters are a great method of a survival shelter.

1. Twist the two larger & thicker sticks vertically into the ground a slightly shorter distance apart than your ‘ridge-pole.’

2. Lean the two ‘Y’ sticks both on the INSIDE of each of these leaning towards you at the bottom…

3. and… rest the ‘ridge-pole’ horizontally across the top of both ‘Ys’ and INFRONT of the two vertical sticks.

4. Ensure the sticks form a stable frame.5. Lean other lighter sticks vertically against

the ‘ridge-pole’ at the same angle to build up a ‘wall of sticks.’

6. Weave small pieces of foliage over and between the sticks with any leaves pointing downwards so any rainwater runs off. Continue until there are no visible gaps.

7. Cover with more leaves and foliage for insulation and wind protection.
