Temple History

Worship of Lord Subrahmanya is one of the inborn appearances of ‘The Creator’ whichis called as ‘Koumaramatham’ in Skandha Purana. There are several scriptures andmythological write ups now available for the worship of Lord Karthikeya. The untold storiesof our ancestors and the ritual practices and programmes developed by the Tanthric acharyasare really the path finders to follow the worship of Lord Subrahmanya.

Chemmanda is one of the 64 oldest immigrations of ancient Kerala, situated nearIrinjalakuda, in Thrissur district the Cultural capital of Kerala. This village is covered with hillsof scenic beauty, green carpeted paddy fields, blessed with cultural and spiritual harmonyand maintained agricultural abundance and richness. Chemmanda Sri Subrahmanya templehas been holding the prime position in Kerala Nadu along with’ Arupadai veedu ‘of Tamil Naduand ‘Subhramanyam’ of Karnataka Desam due to their archaic and historical importance.

The legendary scriptures says that the young Balasubrahmanya got annoyed with hisbeloved parents and left Mount Kailas and travelled towards far end of Dakshin Bharatha. He arrived at Kumaranchira, the nearby village of Chemmanda, where Sri Dhrama Sastha ofKumaranchira gave a suitable abode for Sri Balasubrahmanya on the top of Chemmandahills. Later the great Maharishi Bhogar took him to an another hill where a temple wasbuilt for him facing towards west (Facing towards Chemmanda) This famous hill is now knownas Palani, where Lord Dhandayudapani is being worshipped. This historical and divine abodeof Lord Subhramanya at Chemmanda is believed to be the original seat (Moolasthanam) ofSri Dhandayudapani of famous Palani temple. Both Palani and Chemmanda abodes havethe same duration in history and is also understood that both Sanctum Sanctorum (Srikovil)is built face to face each other in direction. This is probably the one and only reason thatmakes Palani as the most favoured spiritual destination for Keralites.

The stone carvings around the Sanctum spread back more than ten centuries, standunique and rare specimen of our ancient history and craftsmanship. A good number of devoteesfrom distant places still visit this temple which substantiates the ancient and divine presenceof Lord Subhramanya here.
