ENTERING GOD’S PRESENCE
INSTRUMENTAL PRELUDE “FATHER, FATHER OF ALL THINGS” FATHER OF ALL THINGS
CALL TO WORSHIP FROM PSALM 146 Minister: Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I
live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. People: The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD
lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
Minister: The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD!
*HYMN OF PRAISE #76 “PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN” LAUDA ANIMA
*PRAYER OF ADORATION Minister and People: Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so
perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
*GOSPEL READING Pew Bible, page 904 JOHN 18: 33-40 Minister: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! People: Thanks be to the Lord!
RENEWING OUR FAITH
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM Question & Answer #26 Minister: How does Christ execute the office of a king? People: Christ executes the office of a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and
defending us, and in restraining all his and our enemies. Unison: Thanks be to God!
*OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Pew Bible, page 161 DEUTERONOMY 17:14-20 Minister: The Word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God!
*PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S WORD REV. JUSTIN BORGER
He Is Your Life: “THE KING THE LORD WILL CHOOSE”
Big Idea: Unlike Solomon, who violated all God’s laws concerning kings (Deuteronomy 17:14-20), Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords fulfills them. 1. The gift of a king (17:14-15) 2. The rule of law (17:16-20)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION The congregation is invited to kneel through the Pronouncement of Forgiveness. Minister and People: Father of mercies forgive us, for we often see ourselves as being great
when we our small. Our pride has deceived us on many occasions. Grant us a spirit of true humility. Give us grace to do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility to count others more significant than ourselves. Forgive us for looking only to our own interests, and empower us to seek first your kingdom and look more and more to the interests of others through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Please take a moment to silently confess your sin.
PRONOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS Minister: Hear this good news! By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not
your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Unison: Thanks be to God!
*HYMN OF RESPONSE #311 “HAIL TO THE LORD’S ANOINTED” AURELIA
RESPONDING IN THANKS

*CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION Minister: The Lord be with you! People: And also with you! Minister: Lift up your hearts! People: We lift them up to the Lord! Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord! People: It is good and right so to do! Minister: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You,
Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Because You gave your only Son to be born for us; who, by the power of the Holy
Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Countless throngs of angels stand before You to serve You night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer You unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim You, and glorify your name as we sing,

HYMN #76
PRAISE, MY SOUL, THE KING OF HEAVEN Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me, his praise should sing? Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, Praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same forever, slow to chide, and swift to bless; Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, Glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes; Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, Widely as his mercy goes. Frail as summer’s flow’r we flourish, blows the wind and it is gone: But while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, Praise the High Eternal One. Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, Praise with us the God of grace!
Henry F. Lyte, 1834 LAUDA ANIMA
HYMN #311
HAIL TO THE LORD’S ANOINTED
Hail to the Lord’s Anointed, great David’s greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, To take away transgression, and rule in equity. He comes with comfort speedy to those who suffer wrong; To help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; To give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, Whose souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth; And love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth; Before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; And righteousness, in fountains, from hill to valley flow. O’er ev’ry foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest, From age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blessed; The tide of time shall never his covenant remove; His name shall stand for ever—that name to us is Love.
Tune: AURELIA
HYMN #254
ALAS! AND DID MY SAVIOR BLEED Alas! and did my Savior bleed, And did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head For such a worm as I! Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree! Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature’s sin. Thus might I hide my blushing face While his dear cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt mine eyes in tears. But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’Tis all that I can do.
Isaac Watts, 1707 Tune: MARTYRDOM
HYMN #246
MAN OF SORROWS! WHAT A NAME Man of Sorrows! what a name For the Son of God, who came Ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned he stood, Sealed my pardon with his blood: Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Guilty, vile, and helpless, we; Spotless Lamb of God was he; Full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Lifted up was he to die, “It is finished!” was his cry; Now in heav’n exalted high: Hallelujah! what a Savior!
When he comes, our glorious King, All his ransomed home to bring, Then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah! what a Savior!
