Approach

Martin Strode, director of SMA, acquired a taste for property development in 1991, while working as a carpenter and builder.

Having successfully renovated and sold his first property, Martin began redeveloping townhouse sites within a 5km radius of Melbourne’s CBD. The subsequent growth of SMA Projects – registered in 1993 - was an organic, measured process that endows the company with a maturity uncommon in property developers.

Martin is supported by a uniquely qualified and talented team – including Robert Murphy, Charlotte Coleman, Dino Tarola, Mathew Carey, Debbie Kelly and John Dynan – some of whom have been with SMA for 13 years.

2012SMA Projects acquired the landmark Yorkshire Brewery site in Collingwood that had laid dormant for many decades given the great opportunity to bring restoration to a forgotten iconic landmark (once the tallest building in Melbourne). As always I was on the lookout for a new and exciting project in areas that had real growth potential - the Yorkshire Brewery development satisfied all these requirements.

The SMA team were responsible for the development master plan, project management, construction, sales, negotiating the management agreements with the appointed operator and delivery of the successful project.

SMA Projects completed this project in November 2004 and comprises 48 apartments on 5 levels overlooking established parkland, a double level basement for 72 cars and 270sqm of retail area space fronting Burwood Road.

Completed in the late 1990s, SMA Projects was responsible for the development and construction of this boutique development. Located in the heart of Prahran, moments from Chapel Street the development comprises of ground floor car parking for 20 cars and includes 2 ground floor offices and 14 one and two bedroom apartments.

Smart Project

SMA Projects Australia secured this development site through a tender campaign. The site had an existing development permit for a 5 level building with basement carpark, 3 retail shops and 33 apartments along with 1000sqm of land for further development.

SMA, through creative thinking, developed a master plan application to amalgamate the 2 sites and successfully obtained a development permit for a further 22 apartments.
