Inclusion is more than just residing in a community: it is the full involvement, participation, equality of rights and celebration of diversity of all people in everyday life. Inclusion starts with you!

Community living is a simple idea. Most of us experience it every day. • We live in integrated communities• We work with our peers• Our kids go to school with their neighbourhood friends.

However, for the almost 1 million Canadians with an intellectual disability, these simple things we take for granted are not a reality.

Although capable of learning in regular schools, working at real jobs, and contributing to our communities, they are often excluded simply because of a label.

CACL is dedicated to ensuring full participation in community life, ending exclusion and discrimination on the basis of intellectual disability, promoting respect for diversity and advancing human rights for all Canadians.

CACL holds the vision of an inclusive and diverse Canada in which everyone, including people with intellectual disabilities and their families, participate fully in all aspects of society.

The community living movement began in the early 1950’s by groups of families

who wanted alternatives to institutions for their children…

• Children with intellectual disabilities still cannot gain access to schools.

• Adults continue to have few options for employment, nowhere to go and little to do and are still in segregated employment situations.

• Affordable housing and support for independent living are still not available and adults living in mini institutions called group homes.

Communities are now aware of the benefits of inclusion and living a life of dignity and full

citizenship.

We as a society, continue to allow the systemic discrimination and exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities from

full participation in all aspects of everyday life.

Page 8: Slideshow for raff and zuhy v2

Today, families and governments are unable to fulfill these requirements of

basic citizenship. Families and CACL need you to help us build inclusive

communities.

In 2010, CACL adopted the Agenda for Change which identified 10 core objectives that will make the difference

in achieving our vision for a fully inclusive Canada:

• Equality Rights• Closing Institutions• Child Rights• Family Supports• Inclusive Education

• Disability Supports• Safe and Inclusive

Communities• Eradicating Poverty• Achieving Employment

Equality• Global Inclusion
