PREFORM, Tipe Serat, Aliran Resin
bentuk cetakan sebelum resin dialirkan.
Orthotropic Having three mutually perpendicular planes of symmetry.
Tow A loose bundle of fibers.
Keuntungan Kerugian

integrity (used as a base) fractions
mengurangi kekakuan efektif lamina.
Weaves can be classified according to the
spacing between the tows.
Weaves with big open spaces between the
tows are termed open weaves, while weaves
with no space between the tows are termed
closed weaves.

Advantages Disadvantages
High stiffness and strength in filament

Poor integrity - "fiber wash"

Anisotropic flow and
performance
Other fiber forms include knit and 2- and 3-dimensionally braided products, which areavailable for specialized uses. Three-dimensional braiding can be used to fabricate one-piece
preforms, virtually eliminating the time-consuming lay-up step from the RTM process and
ensuring uniformity, although weaving can be costly and it excludes the ability to easily vary
the preform architecture.
Often, various types of reinforcement materials are combined in a preform to yield a balance
of properties or processability. For example, random mat layers interspersed between wovenlayers might be used to enhance flow during processing. Other types of "hybrid" preforms
might consist of different fibers woven together within a layer to achieve the desired
properties.
2. Anisotropic Flow
It is assumed here that the fiber mat is isotropic in plane.
Bidang xy berimpit dengan bidang perform. Titik koordinat-zpada arah transverse perform.
Kxx dan Kyy adalah permeabilitas preform in-plane. Kzzpermeabilitas preform out-of-plane.
Jika Kxx=Kyy, maka preform mencapai in-plane isotropy.

This plot shows pressure drop in Mega Pascals across two saturated cross-plied preforms
which are assembled from unidirectional stitched plies by stacking them up in a 0/90 degree
arrangement. The measured steady state flow rate in milliliters per second is plotted on the
y-axis.
Some conclusions from this plot:
Jika viscositas resin, panjang L dan luas penampang A perform diketahui, maka

Tingkat
kompresi yang tinggi memperbaiki sifat mekanik produk at the expense of permeability.
Selama proses, tekanan vaccum bag dapat mendeformasi fabric, merubah fraksi volum serat
dan permeabilitas.
Gambar II.? Hunbungan mampu tekan terhadap fraksi volum serat
Kemudahan handling -- in terms of cutting, stacking and insertion of preform plies -- is aserious concern in moderate to high-volume production modes.
Drapeability, or the ability for the reinforcement layers to conform to curvature in the mold
is a factor of the choice of reinforcement form -- that is, random mat, woven, etc.
Drapeability must be considered for molds with significant curvature.
Finally, strength, stiffness and fiber volume fraction must be considered. From the final
property point of view, particularly for strength and stiffness, a very high fiber volume
fraction might be desirable. the limiting factor is the effective permeability of such tightly
packed preform which seriously impact processability.

Gambar II.? Hubungan Vf terhadap Permeabilitas
Gambar II.?
vacuum bag. Tekanan dapat merubah arsitektur fabric. Beberapa perubahan tersebut adalah:
Perubahan jumlah nesting diantara layer
Perubahan fiber packing dalam individu bundle serat (aspek rasio bundle serat
berubah)
Re-orientasi serat

However, the trends are not always as simple as they appear! Mechanical properties do
improve with increasing fiber volume fraction, but not always linearly, and sometimes only
to a certain critical point. The graph below demonstrates this effect. At very high volume
fractions, the fibers are over compacted, causing the properties to drop off.

Database Permeability Values
http://srdata.nist.gov/permeability/intro.htm
Introduction
Liquid molding is an important manufacturing technique for modern reinforced
polymers. Resin flow over long distances through complex preform structures is unique to
liquid composite molding and greatly differs from other composite manufacturing methods
(Advani 1993). Extensive literature exists on the general topic of flow through porous
media and is helpful for understanding the effects of geometrical complexity on flow
behavior (Slattery 1981).
Permeability is the most important parameter governing resin flow through a composite
preform. Taking flow measurements is often difficult and the number of different preform
materials is quite large (Parnas et al. 1995). Permeability is important because it can be used
to compute flow behavior easily in large complex molds. This practice contrasts with the
nearly prohibitive cost to compute flow behavior using detailed porous medium geometry.

woven, unidirectional, and stitched fabrics.

For the case of anisotropic permeabilities, the higher permeability data are
displayed in Figure 1. Note that at high fiber volume fractions in the range useful for
structural applications, the permeability can vary by more than an order of magnitude,
depending on the type of reinforcement. Even among similar fabric types, such as
woven or unidirectional fabrics, the variation can be considerable and depends on
details of the weave or crossing thread patterns (Parnas & Salem 1993).
Figure 2: In-plane radial unsaturated flow data currently in the database.
Corresponding unidirectional measurements from Figure 1 are included for
comparison. For anisotropic materials, the higher in-plane permeabilities are
plotted. In most cases, the permeability measured by the radial flow method is
considerably larger than the permeability measured by the saturated flow
method. This discrepancy is consistent and results primarily because of the neglect of
capillary forces in the analysis of the unsaturated radial flow experiments. Adescription of such differences is available (Parnas et al. 1995). Capillary forces can
cause transient effects in unsaturated measurements in which the apparent
permeability magnitude and principal direction can change during the course of the
experiment. The radial flow results reported here and included in the database are
those that were recorded late in the experiments after most transient effects had
disappeared.

Figure 3: Thru-thickness unidirectional
saturated flow and corresponding in-plane unidirectional flow measurements.
The geometric mean in-plane permeability is plotted for comparison to the thru-
thickness permeability. In all cases, the thru-thickness permeability values are a factor
of 6 to 8 smaller than the in-plane permeability values. A lower thru-thickness
permeability is expected, because most fibers lie in the fabric plane of the tested
fabrics. However, the consistency of the ratio of the thru-thickness to the in-plane
permeability is notable.

Proses VARI merupakan tipikal gambaran teknik RTM. Cetakan dengan biaya murah
diperoleh dari material seperti epoksi. Serat penguat dipotong dan disusun dengan tangan
mengikuti bentuk cetakan. Penyimpanan dalam cetakan dapat dilakukan sekaligus atau
disusun dalam bentuk perform lalu dimasukkan dalam cetakan.
Tekanan rendah mengakibatkan proses pengisian cetakan relative lama dan kandungan serat
sedikit. Ketidakmampuan cetakan mengakomodasi temperature tinggi, ditambah heat
