Parents Survival Packet 2018-2019

Dear Parents,

Your child has chosen to turn out for the great sport of wrestling. Thank you for

allowing them the opportunity to wrestle and become a better person for the effort.

We have put together sort of a survival packet for you to help you get through the

season. In this packet you will find: a season schedule, a nutrition guide, expectations,

and lettering criteria. Please read the information and feel free to ask questions.

Wrestling is a sport that teaches kids about life more than any other sport there

is. Competition is something people live with for the rest of their lives. It is important

to teach athletes the need for sportsmanship, but also important to show them that

success is the result of hard work. From wrestling, your child will gain the following:

1.They will become stronger, quicker, and more coordinated, 2. Have a better

understanding of nutrition, 3. Develop a strong work ethic, 4. Ignite their competitive

spirit

Skyview Storm Wrestling Goals & Expectations

Although wrestling seems to be an individual sport, we are a TEAM. Each and every one

of us has a role in maintaining the morale of the team. We are going to take care of

one another and watch each other’s back. Therefore, we will follow these guidelines

throughout the season:

Wrestlers will…

1. Know the 8 basic skills of wrestling: stance, motion, elevation change, penetration, back step, back arch, pummeling, and lifting

2. Develop a team and community atmosphere of pride and positive attitude. 3. Create an atmosphere of hard work and self-discipline . 4. Recognize and develop a healthy lifestyle which includes; nutrition, weight

management, hydration, exercise, sleep and good hygiene. 5. Maintain a strong work ethic which includes being punctual to classes and

practice every day, while consistently putting forth their optimal effort. 6. Have a willingness to give their best effort every day while staying focused. 7. Commit to the Skyview team, self and wrestling community . 8. Respect the sport, coaches, teammates , referees, and opponents . 9. Compete at a high level with pride, dignity, and honor as a Skyview wrestler. 10. Believe in themselves and their teammates. 11. Value that our wrestling room is our temple a clean room is a positive room

do your part to keep it clean. 12. Trust their coaches.

Parents will...

1. Be positive, involved, and supportive of all the kids in our program

2. Remind Varsity Athletes to remain until the last wrestler has wrestled at all

meets and tournaments. JV negotiable.

3. Understand that we cannot guarantee your wrestler will get a match until

weigh-ins. It is our hope that all of our wrestlers will be able to wrestle every

meet. A good idea would be to call or text your child to ask before heading to

far away meets.

4. All students are expected to send 20 emails for their SNAP! Fundraiser.

“Trust, Integrity, Excellence”

Coaching Philosophies

STUDENT ATHLETE

Sports are a privilege for those who can maintain an acceptable grade point average. One F is

unacceptable. The coaching staff reserves the right to withhold wrestling athletes who demonstrate that

they are not doing their best in school in terms of academics and behavior. As a team this year we will set

the goal to improve our team GPA and will demonstrate always, Storm Pride, around school. We are here

to get an education first, wrestling comes after that.

DISCIPLINE & SPORTSMANSHIP

This coaching staff will refuse to place an athlete on the mat that cannot control their actions in

school, practice, and competition. If a problem occurs in any of these areas, we will take action.

Consequences will range in severity from a simple talk, to missing competition depending on the severity

and number of occurrences. As a team, if we take care of these issues early and firmly, we can

concentrate on our season and the road to the Tacoma Dome.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

Every athlete has a very important decision to make before they decide to join this team. If they

are here to wrestle, let’s get to work. However, if they choose to attend parties on the weekend and

disregard the code of ethics for athletic participation, then the coaching staff will ask that you leave this

program. On a wrestling team we depend on one another for support on and off the mat, and this lack of

self-discipline will weaken this program.

THE BODY

Wrestling is a physical and demanding sport which may result in some injury. Please communicate

with your son or daughter the need to approach a coach if they have any concerns. Our philosophy is to

provide a safe environment and immediate attention, if necessary, for our student-athletes. We need to

know. We are very conscious of concussions these days and if we suspect a possible head injury, we will

hold the athlete out until cleared by a medical professional.

Skin condition issues are often a nature of this sport. Anything suspicious they need to report to the

Coaching Staff for evaluation. Wrestlers are expected to take a shower every day directly after practice.

To keep our bodies free of infections, wrestlers are expected to bring the following to each practice:

personal water bottle, two clean shirts, running shoes, wrestling shoes, and a clean pair of shorts.

Nutrition Awareness

Being in wrestling does not mean cut weight! In fact, this is discouraged. We focus on learning technique and the principles of success.

In some cases you will need to keep your weight dialed in, and we want you to do it right.

Even if you don’t need to lose weight, a proper diet will give you that extra edge. Eat healthy food, eat only when your body is hungry, and stop when you are full.

Golden Rule: You want to be in a negative energy balance: Making small adjustments to both your caloric intake and your

physical activity is generally recommended as the most reasonable and sustainable method of weight loss. Using this method, you can

burn a few hundred extra calories with a workout and cut back calories by eliminating dessert or high-calorie snacks to reach your

goal. IMPORTANT ADVICE: 1. Graze throughout the day / Eat 6 to 7 smaller meals a day. 2. Don’t miss breakfast. Eat high carbohydrate breakfast with protein. (cereal/oats, eggs, fruit) 3. Eating most of your calories for breakfast and gradually decrease to dinner. 4. Avoid: any soda, excess red meat, and excess sodium 5. Eat a protein rich lunch – ham and nonfat cheese sandwich nonfat yogurt, banana, protein bar 6. Eat a variety of foods including vegetables. 7. Doing a cardiovascular workout in the morning to keep your metabolism going through the day. 8. Taking a multiple vitamin and vitamin C daily 9. Water: Divide your weight by 2, change the number from pounds to ounces, and drink that amount of water each day. Add another 16-24 oz for every hour of exercise. Example: A person weighing 130lbs: 130/2= 65oz

Weight control, You can’t do it on your diet alone! Diet should be close to: 60% Carbohydrates

20% Protein 20% fat *After Weight-ins: 1. Drink one to two pounds of Power Aid or Gatorade 2. Eat one to two bagels 3. Eat 2 pieces of fruit (2 bananas) 4. Drink more water 5. Drink some coffee or tea an hour to 30 minutes before the match 6. Eat granola bars are also a good snack after weigh-ins *Tournament Food Pack List 1. Gatorade or Power Aid (64oz) 2. Six bagels 3. Fruit (3 bananas, 1 orange and 1 apple) 4. Water (drink until urine is clear) 5. Pop tarts, granola bars or graham crackers 6. More water

Negative energy Balance example:

Calories consumed each day: 2000

Calories burned each day: 2500

2000 (energy input) - 2500 (energy output) = -500 calories

With a negative energy balance of 500 calories per day, this person will have a total calorie deficit of 3500 calories per week and will lose roughly one pound per week on this plan.
