CHILD CARESKYFUL
JEAN BAIK2013 SUMMER CAPSTONE 1
PROF. KATHERINE SETSER, BRIAN DAVIES
How Important Is the Environment in Early Childhood Education?
Why Is the Child Care Center Located in a Skyscraper?
+ Children’s experiences are limited by their surroundings. Therefore, the environment we provide for them has a crucial impact on the way the child’s brain develops.+ Many children spend a large portion of their wakeful hours in early childhood group settings. A baby beginning child care will spend up to 12,000 hours in the program. This is more time than he/she will spend in both elementary and secondary school.
+ The skyscraper was built as “a city within a city”, featuring numerous on-site facilities. Mixed-used buildings include a theatre, gym, swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, stores, restaurants with residential and hotel floors. However, all the programs are adult centered. Providing child-friendly environment will change the skyscraper life style.
+ Child care center in a skyscraper can solved the problem of “Isolation, lack of neighbor hood feel” in high-rise living.+ Skyful will have more green then concrete for our children.
+ Kid’s cafes are very popluar in very crowded urban cities like Seoul and Tokyo. + Kid’s cafes have children’s playground inside a restaurant/cafe providing safe and joyful environment for children while their parents eat and drink coffee on the other side. + Kid’s cafes provides not only safe and fun playground but also gives lessons or provides famous learning materials such as Montessori and Froebel learning materials.
What is the Trend for Child Care Center in Urban Cities Around the World?
How the project benefits: social, economic, cultural, and environmental?

+ WORKING PARENTSThe skyful child care is open until midnight special-ly for the radisson blu ho-tel guests. The guests can leave their children with a baby sitter to tend to their business or their friend’s wedding.
Aqua residents do not have to drive to a child care cen-ter to drop/pick up their chil-dren. The skyful child care will bring the aqua tower residents’ relationship clos-er by hosting family activi-ties in the building.
Professional parents who work in the aqua building can leave their childrens at the skyful chid care while they are working. Scince they are in the same building, the parents can have lunch with their child/ren.
Children are close to their parents and home. Urban children will be exposed to a multi-cultural environ-ment. They will experience a eco-friendly, playful envi-ronment with a great view of chicago downtown.

ILLINOIS STAFF/CHILD RATIO STANDARDS FOR DAY CARE CENTERS
Licensed Child Care Centers must meet Illinois De-partment of Children and Family Services (DCFS) standards for health and safety including child to staff ratios and required space per child.
Whenever children of different ages are combined, the staff/child ratio and maximum group size must be based on the age of the youngest child in the group.
