The only issue to be resolved in Group A is which team can secure top place in the section - a goal Juventus FC will be striving to achieve on Matchday 6. They share an almost identical record with FC Bayern München who currently occupy top spot by virtue of having conceded one goal less in their five games than the Italian champions.

Road ends for Rapid • For SK Rapid Wien the game represents the end of their European journey for this season. Yet the Austrian title holders also have much to play for as they try to arrest a sequence of five straight defeats in the section while continuing to seek an elusive first win in their 12th match in the UEFA Champions League spread over two campaigns.

Last meeting • Juventus were comfortable winners on 27 September in the corresponding fixture. Despite being without Patrick Vieira through suspension, they romped home 3-0 with David Trezeguet on the mark in the first half. Further goals arrived from Adrian Mutu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored his first UEFA Champions League goal of the season.

Del Piero makes amends • On Matchday 5, Alessandro Del Piero saw Juventus through to the knockout stages with a 1-0 victory against Club Brugge KV. Restored to the side with Ibrahimovic suspended, Del Piero headed the only goal from Pavel Nedvěd's long cross. Last season Juventus were unbeaten group winners but were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual winners Liverpool FC.

• Meanwhile Rapid, who were without the suspended Andreas Dober and the injured Axel Lawaree and Marcin Adamski, lost 40 away to Bayern.

Two previous pairings • This is the third time the clubs have been drawn together in UEFA competition, meeting first in the third round of the 1971/72 UEFA Cup with Juventus winning 51 on aggregate. Roberto Bettega was the outstanding performer over the two legs, scoring four times for the Italian club.

• The teams then met in Rapid's other UEFA Champions League season in 1996/97, drawing 11 in Vienna when Andrzej Lesiak cancelled out an early goal from Juventus striker Christian Vieri. It was the last point gained by Rapid in the competition.

• The return ended in a 50 victory for Juventus with Alen Bokšic and Del Piero each scoring twice. It was the fixture that started the Austrian side's current run of eight straight losses in the competition.

Four defeats against Italian sides • This is the ninth home game for Rapid against Italian opposition with their record

showing two wins, two draws and four defeats. They last won against FC Internazionale Milano, a 21 success in the first round of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup.

One loss in Austria • Juventus' record in Austria shows three wins, a draw and a defeat and the loss is still recalled fondly in that country. It came in the preliminary round of the 1958/59 European Champion Clubs' Cup, a stunning 70 defeat against Wiener SC, the heaviest in their European history.

• Rapid are making their second appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage having been involved in the 1996/97 season, when they drew two and lost the remaining four of their six matches. Their points both came in Vienna thanks to 11 draws against Fenerbahçe SK and Juventus. However, the Austrian side failed to score in their three away defeats, against Manchester United FC (20), Juventus (50) and Fenerbahçe (10).

• Rapid featured in a UEFA club competition final as recently as the 1995/96 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup when they lost 10 to a Bruno N’Gotty goal after 28 minutes for Paris SaintGermain FC in Brussels.

• From the final of the Cup Winners' Cup to this season, their best performance in UEFA club competition came in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup when they reached the third round of the competition before bowing out 30 on aggregate to eventual beaten finalists, S.S. Lazio.

• Rapid entered the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round after winning last season's Austrian Bundesliga by a point from Grazer AK. It was their 31st championship, but their first since 1995/96 – which was also the last time they advanced to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

• The Austrian champions overcame F91 Dudelange from Luxembourg in the second qualifying round, running out 93 aggregate winners after all but ending the tie with a 61 away win in the first leg. Strike partners Muhammet Akagündüz and Axel Lawaree both helped themselves to two goals apiece. Rapid allowed Dudelange to take a twogoal interval lead in the return leg in Vienna, but two goals from Lawaree (47, 81) and another from Matthias Dollinger (86) eased Austrian nerves.

• Rapid were held at home in their third qualifying round first leg by Russian champions FC Lokomotiv Moskva, for whom Aleksandr Samedov opened the scoring after nine minutes. Rapid levelled 15 minutes from time through Josef Valachovič and the Slovakian defender was on target in the return leg in Moscow, scoring the only goal of the game six minutes from time to secure Rapid's passage to the group stage for the second time in their history.

• But Matchdays 1 and 2 yielded no goals for and four against in two defeats. FC Bayern München won at the Ernst Happel stadium thanks to José Paulo Guerrero's goal

• More of the same followed on Matchday 3 as Rapid slumped to their third successive defeat in the competition, on this occasion at home to Club Brugge KV for whom Boško Balaban scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time. The defeat was Rapid's sixth consecutive loss in the competition.

• The Austrian side opened the scoring in their Matchday 4 engagement away to Club Brugge thanks to Marek Kincl’s diving header after only 33 seconds at the Jan Breydelstadion. But the home side hit back to claim backtoback wins through Javier Portillo (9), Boško Balaban (25) and veteran Gert Verheyen (63). Steffen Hoffmann’s 81stminute header ensured a nervous finale, but the Belgian side held on.

• Rapid scored two goals in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 appearances in the competition against Club Brugge on Matchday 4. The two goals also doubled their alltime tally as well as providing their first goals outside of Vienna in the competition. Their other goals in the UEFA Champions League came in their other appearance in the group stage during the 1996/97 season when goals from Christian Stumpf and Andrzej Lesiak secured two 11 draws at home to Fenerbahçe SK and Juventus as Rapid amassed two points from their six engagements in the competition.

• But on Matchday 5, Rapid slumped to a 40 defeat by Bayern in snowy conditions in Munich. Roy Makaay finally (72, 77) broke his UEFA Champions League duck this season with two secondhalf strikes in quick succession but Sebastian Deisler (21), who opened the scoring midway through the opening period, was Bayern's inspiration in the absence of the injured Michael Ballack and Mehmet Scholl. Standin playmaker Ali Karimi (54) was also on target.

• Rapid have struggled to score goals at home recently in UEFA club competition, failing to find the target in four of their last six matches dating back to August 2004. This season, they scored in both qualifying rounds prior to entering the UEFA Champions League against F91 Dudelange (32) and FC Lokomotiv Moskva (11), but have subsequently failed to hit the back of the net in the group stage against Bayern and Club Brugge, losing both 10.

• To date, Rapid have played 184 matches in UEFA club competition, but they are still waiting for their first victory in the UEFA Champions League having drawn two and lost nine of their engagements to date scoring four goals and conceding 24 times.

• From the 184 matches to date, the Austrian side have won 73, drawn 34 and lost 77 times with 280 goals scored and 256 conceded.

• Juventus are involved in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the sixth successive time and for the tenth time in the last eleven years. The Turin giants failed to qualify for the 1999/00 competition and entered the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup before

qualifying for the 1999/00 UEFA Cup, which they exited at the fourth round stage.

• Winners of the competition in 1995/96, the Turin club have been losing finalists on their three subsequent appearances against BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97), Real Madrid CF (1997/98) and AC Milan (2002/03).

• Both Bayern and Juventus hold the distinct record of being the only teams to compete in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final in each of the last four decades. Juventus's record is as follows:  2002/03: Juventus 00 AC Milan (23 on penalties after extra time) 1997/98: Juventus 01 Real Madrid CF  1996/97: BV Borussia Dortmund 31 Juventus  1995/96: AFC Ajax 11 Juventus (24 on penalties after extra time)  1984/85: Juventus 10 Liverpool FC  1982/83: Hamburger SV 10 Juventus  1972/73: AFC Ajax 10 Juventus

• Juventus are seeking their first appearance in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final  and their eighth overall  since their penalty shootout defeat by AC Milan at the end of the 2002/03 season. Along with Milan, Juve have featured in four UEFA Champions League finals since the competition started in the 1992/93 season, but have only recorded one victory  a 42 success on penalties following a 11 draw with AFC Ajax after extra time.

• Juventus advanced directly to the group stage as they won the Italian Serie A championship by seven points from Milan, with FC Internazionale Milano and Udinese Calcio a further seven and 17 points behind.

• Juve defeated Club Brugge KV away from home on the opening matchday as Pavel Nedvěd (66) and David Trezeguet (75) did the damage at the Jan Breydelstadion with Jeanvoin YuluMatondo (85) scoring the Belgian club's consolation. Then in Turin on Matchday 2, Juve defeated SK Rapid Wien as goals from Trezeguet (27), Adrian Mutu (82) and Zlatan Ibrahimović saw off the Austrian club.

• Firsthalf goals from Sebastian Deisler (32) and Martin Demichelis (39) helped FC Bayern München exorcise the ghosts of last season's twin defeats by Juventus with an impressive 21 win on home soil, thus handing the Italian team their first defeat in all competitions this season. Although unnerved by Zlatan Ibrahimović's lastminute closerange tapin, Bayern deserved this prestigious victory and the precious three points it brought, after a courageous attacking display which ruffled the Italian champions throughout.

• But Juventus were to avenge their Matchday 3 defeat with a 21 success at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the return fixture. Two goals from David Trezeguet (62, 85) provided the Turin club with the win after Sebastian Deisler (66) had restored parity for the Bavarian club.

• Alessandro Del Piero scored the only goal as Juventus qualified for the knockout

• In addition, Manchester United have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition for the each of the past nine seasons, winning the European Champion Clubs' Cup at the end of the 1998/99 campaign. The English club have also advanced as far as the semifinals twice, the quarterfinals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons.

• Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only Real Betis Balompié did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2004/05 season.

Josef Hickersberger

Fabio Capello

Head coach profiles

Josef Hickersberger has enjoyed a distinguished career in Austria which has encompassed FIFA World Cup appearances as a player (1978) and coach (1990). He started out in football in 1966 at Amstetten prior to a move to FK Austria Wien where he would win back-to-back titles in 1969 and 1970, together with Austrian Cups in 1967 and 1971. Hickersberger then tried his luck across the border, turning out for Offenbacher Kickers and Fortuna Düsseldorf before returning to his homeland after Argentina '78 to play for SW Innsbruck. He ended his career with SK Rapid Wien following their 1982 title triumph.

'Hicke' scored five goals in 39 appearances for Austria, ending his international career following the famous 3-2 victory over West Germany in Argentina. After coaching lower-league teams, he took charge of the Austrian Under-21s and then the senior side, guiding them to the 1990 World Cup two years after his appointment. He lost his job after the shock defeat by the Faroe Islands in a EURO qualifier in 1990, but bounced back quickly, moving to Düsseldorf and Austria Wien - where he won the Austrian Cup and Super Cup - before spells in Bahrain, Egypt and Qatar.

In 2002 he returned to Rapid Wien, taking over a squad in crisis and moulding a low-budget side with few stars. His reward was to lead the side to their first title since 1996 - and their 31st in total - and subsequently the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Hickersberger will leave Rapid on 1 January to become coach of Austria, with SV Pasching's Georg Zellhofer taking over.

AC Milan, Real Madrid CF, AS Roma, Juventus. A glance at Fabio Capello's former and present employers tells you who the biggest clubs turn to when they need success. The Italian's combination of passion and pragmatism has proved a winning formula, bringing league titles to each of the four teams of which he has taken charge. As a player, Capello enjoyed successful spells at Roma, Juve and Milan and won 32 caps for Italy.

While Capello's coaching acumen is beyond question, he has always enjoyed the services of top players to turn his tactical visions into reality. Milan won four Serie A titles in five seasons between 1991 and 1996, including an unbeaten campaign in 1991/92. Along the way, they had contributions from some of the club's greatest-ever servants including Dutch trio Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit and defensive legends Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. They also lifted the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. Capello then spent a single season at Madrid before returning to Milan.

Two seasons and another league championship later, Capello's next stop was Roma, who had won Serie A just twice before. In 2000, he splashed out on Gabriel Batistuta, and the Argentinian legend's goals helped bring the title back to the Italian capital. With the club suffering from financial difficulties, Capello left for Juventus in May 2004 and

Jaroslav Jára has made his way into the top bracket of European referees with some fine displays in recent years.

Based in Plzen, Jára earned his FIFA badge in 1998 and took charge of three UEFA Cup matches during the 2004/05 season, as well as the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.

The 2005/06 encounter between SK Rapid Wien and Juventus on Matchday 6 was his first appointment in the UEFA Champions League proper, having previously only taken charge of a first qualifying round match between FC BATE Borisov and Bohemian FC in July 2003.

September 2005 was an exciting month for Jára as he took charge of a FIFA World Cup qualifier between France and the Faroe Islands, with the French winning 3-0 in Lens, and a UEFA Cup first-round match between Grazer AK and RC Strasbourg.

Juventus hit high note at Viola(Sunday, 4 December 2005)

Domestic news

Juventus opened up an eight-point cushion at the Serie A summit with a 2-1 victory at high-flying ACF Fiorentina. Their Matchday 6 opponents on Wednesday, SK Rapid Wien, also earned three valuable points, while Club Brugge KV returned to winning ways in Belgium. But FC Bayern München were unable to make it a clean sweep in UEFA Champions League Group A as they were held.

SK Rapid Wien 3–1 SV Pasching

Josef Hickersberger signed off his last game at the Gerhard Hanappi stadium as Rapid coach with a victory against SV Pasching, leaving the Vienna club third in the Austrian Bundesliga, just three points adrift of co-leaders SV Austria Salzburg and FK Austria Wien. Hickersberger takes over the Austrian national team in January, leaving Georg Zellhofer to take the reins at Rapid, and has just two games remaining at the club - Wednesday's game against Juventus and the league encounter in Salzburg next weekend.

Rapid, who have no new injury problems, took the lead after 23 minutes, captain Steffen Hofmann scoring. Andreas Ivanschitz doubled the lead with a penalty on the stroke of half-time before Muhammet Akagündüz got Rapid's final goal with 16 minutes remaining.

The departing Hickersberger said: "The win, the emotions because of my last home match with Rapid and because of the fans, who honoured me with a standing ovation, all made it the most emotional match of the 63 I have been in charge of at this stadium. I'll miss the atmosphere and my team because we had great success together and were a perfect team. I'll see some of them in the national team, but not all. Today we deserved this win but Pasching were dangerous. We were a bit lucky too."

ACF Fiorentina 1-2 Juventus

Mauro Camoranesi scored with just two minutes remaining as Juve earned a hard-fought victory at third-placed Fiorentina on Sunday to move eight points clear of AC Milan at the Serie A summit. The visitors got off to the best possible start when David Trezeguet broke the deadlock on eight minutes with his eleventh goal of the season, but Giampaolo Pazzini equalised five minutes before the interval.

The home side then hit the woodwork three times, but the game looked to be petering out into a draw until Camoranesi's late winner. "The match was fantastic," Juve coach Fabio Capello said. "Both sides produced good football and I believe a draw would have been the fairest result. But we are really glad about today's win and about the results we are getting at the moment."

It was the second meeting with Fiorentina inside five days, following the 2-2 draw in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, when Juve came from two goals down. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made his long-awaited return to action for that game, but Christian Abbiati returned between the posts on Sunday. Defenders Alessandro Birindelli and

Jonathan Zebina and Uruguayan midfield player Ruben Olivera remain long-term absentees.

Club Brugge KV 2-0 KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen

Club Brugge bounced back from last Wednesday's shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of SV Zulte-Waregem in the Belgian Cup, with a 2-0 victory against struggling Germinal Beerschot on Saturday. Boško Balaban was the hero for the home side, scoring two second-half goals as Jan Ceulemans' side, who were without suspended Gert Verheyen and Victor Simões, maintained the pressure on leading duo RSC Anderlecht and R. Standard de Liège.

After a nervy opening half-hour, Club Brugge settled and the Croatian striker finally broke the deadlock on 63 minutes after a fine build-up involving Sven Vermant and Mannaseh Ishiaku. Vermant then made an equally telling contribution at the other end when he cleared off the goalline, before capping a superb performance by teeing up Balaban for his ninth goal of the season a minute from time.

Ceulemans, who included Glenn Verbauwhede on the bench, said: "Balaban might be a little irritating sometimes, and we have to make certain allowances, but he comes up with the goods." Victory came at a cost, however, with Gunther Vanaudenaerde (stomach) and Ivan Leko (groin) taken off, joining Rune Lange (ankle), Olivier De Cock (achilles), Jonathan Blondel, Michael Klukowski, Joos Valgaeren and Stijn Stijnen (all knee) on the sidelines.

VfB Stuttgart 0–0 FC Bayern München

Bundesliga leaders Bayern battled through the whole of the second half with ten men to claim a point at Stuttgart on Saturday. The German champions, four points clear at the top of the table, had midfielder Sebastian Diesler sent off shortly before half-time in an otherwise uneventful game.

Coach Felix Magath was without a number of key players due to injury, including Lucio and Roque Santa Cruz (both knee), while Görlitz and Hasan Salihamidžić were omitted after appearing fatigued in training. Mehmet Scholl (thigh) and Zé Roberto (knee) also missed out though they are back in training and are in contention to play against Club Brugge. However, goalkeeper Oliver Kahn (calf) and Michael Ballack (flu) are doubtful for Wednesday after failing to train on Sunday. Ballack was making his comeback against Stuttgart after three games out with muscular problems, while Phillip Lahm also returned as a halftime substitute.

Magath said: "This match was not good, but the conditions for a good match were not right. Stuttgart have problems at home and we wanted to wait and win the game in the second half, but the red card against Sebastian Deisler changed our strategy. Overall I am happy with the result even though we hardly had any chances."
