PERFECTION, IS IT A BLESSING OR
A CURSE?
Over the past few weeks I have come across many
different thought producing messages that promote a
pursuit of perfection. Whether it be in playing a musi-
cal instrument, doing a math problem or acting like a Christian we
all receive challenges to improve who we are
and what we do. This demand can cause
stress, sometimes a healthy stress, sometimes a
not so healthy stress. So, what should we
expect from ourselves?
The answer might best be explained in asking
this question: What if we don’t strive for perfection?
• In music, we strive for perfection because music resonates with
our being. Music can connect to our inner self, both in playing
and in listening to music. A recording studio cuts hundreds of
takes to make a song worthy of production. And so, when does
that expectation of perfect music playing / performing begin?
When talking to a music teacher, they will tell you that it is im-
portant to practice, practice, practice right away so that good
habits will be formed and so that the performer can be the best
they can be. What happens if you fail? At worst, it is a feeling of
embarrassment that might come when performing, or it could
be letting those down who play with you when they are count-
ing on you. Is it important to be perfect? It depends on the situ-
ation. Is it “life important”? Probably not.
• In mathematics, perfection is summed up in finding the correct
answer. ...Read more

Learning Tip #2: "Movement anchors thought".
If your child is struggling to sit and write their spelling
words with a pencil, try having them "air draw" the let-
ters as they say them aloud, or grab a cookie sheet
and some shaving cream to make it multisensory learn-
ing! Get creative... Your kids might have some fun ide-

CURIOSITY VIA Survey calls this strength Curiosity
Parent virtue: Wisdom and Knowledge. Strengths of wisdom and knowledge are cognitive strengths related to the acquisition and use of information. Strengths comprised in this virtue are creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning and perspective.
WHAT DOES CURIOSITY MEAN?
You like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything.
Curiosity is a crucial component of one's character. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plotlines of movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. All individuals experience curiosity, but differ in their willingness to experience it – behaviorally, intellectually, and emotionally.
Curiosity is associated with novelty-seeking. Novelty-seekers are more willing to endure risks – such as physical risks of skydiving or social risks of meeting new people – in order to gain the benefits of new experiences. Curiosity is also associated with being receptive to exploring new ideas, feelings, or values – which carry their own inherent risks and rewards.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Individuals with the character strength of curiosity are more likely to ask questions and try new things. Curiosity then is a form of courage. Asking questions exposes the fact that we don’t know and trying a new activity means we might fail. But, it’s only through asking questions and exploring new opportunities that we learn and grow. However, curiosity can be detrimental to our health, if it’s associated with illegal substance use or other risky behavior.
On a group level, curiosity is crucial in making discoveries that bring important benefits. For example, exotic plants may yield new medicines and ancient artifacts may illuminate astonishing pieces of human history. Curiosity is what compels astronauts into outer space and submarines to the bottom of the ocean. It is hardwired into the human genome and a defining element of human success.
Individuals with this strength might be described as:
• Interested • Inquiring • Investigative
Individuals with this strength are likely to think, feel, or behave in the following ways:
• Asking lots of questions is a good thing. It helps us learn.
• Exploration – whether physical, mental, or emotional – is how humanity grows and evolves.
• I get excited when I travel to a new place, try an exotic food, or experience a new sensation.
• When I go home from school or work, I like to discover new routes.
• I’m always curious to see if my expectations match with the new reality that I have discovered.
• I despise monotony and boredom.
• Exploratory • Probing • Adventurous
QUOTES ON CURIOSITY
“There is always a place I can take someone’s curiosity. That’s my challenge as an educator. No one is dumb who is curious. The people who don’t ask questions remain clueless throughout their lives.” -NEIL deGRASSE TYSON “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” -WALT DISNEY “Curiosity is the one thing invincible in nature.” -FREYA STARK “Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.” -MARIE CURIE

Book Day! October 4, 2018
Come to school as your favorite book character!
Wear your costume to school! The parade of characters will take place at the start of the day after homeroom (8:15 am).
After lunch, students are to change into spirit wear for the remainder of the day.
For those who do not wish to participate with a costume, it is a spirit wear day.
Guidelines & Entry Form Open to all students.

Students can be judged in the following categories: Most Creative, Best Depiction, and People’s Choice.

Contestants whose costumes include masks may only wear the masks during the parade.
Contestants are allowed to bring props within reason:
Unacceptable props would be weapons of any kind, items that look like or advertise
alcohol or drugs, etc.
A panel of judges will review the contestants based on the costume’s resemblance to the
character it is based on, and the representation of their costume, and craftsmanship skill and will
determine which contestant is the Most Creative and the Best Depiction.
Audience participation will be key in determining the People’s Choice!
To participate you must:
1. Donate a gently used book or $1 Donation Proceeds collected to participate will be donated.
