Coaches record: Teitur Thordarson vs. SJ: first game … Frank Yallop v VAN: first game VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Vancouver Whitecaps FC saw their winless streak extended to eight games, playing to a scoreless draw at the Chicago Fire on Saturday evening at Toyota Park. Whitecaps FC have 7 points from 9 matches, sitting in eighth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The best chance in the game came late in the second half when Eric Hassli was put in alone behind the back four, but Fire goalkeeper Jon Conway came off his line and took the ball off Hassli's foot.

It was the only save Conway was required over the match; Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Jay Nolly was called upon to make two saves.

Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson made two changes to the team that lost 2-1 to the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Blake Wagner and Eric Hassli came into the side in place of Wes Knight and Omar Salgado.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Jay Nolly - Jonathan Leathers, Greg Janicki, Mouloud Akloul, Alain Rochat - Davide Chiumiento, Terry Dunfield, Gershon Koffie, Blake Wagner (Shea Salinas 58) - Eric Hassli, Camilo (Nizar Khalfan 71).

TEAM NEWS Whitecaps FC return home after back-to-back road games, getting a first point away from British Columbia in

the scoreless draw with Chicago. The ‘Caps have a win and three draws at Empire Field. "The guys showed great character in the second half," said Whitecaps FC coach Teitur Thordarson. "That

[point] was important. We were under pressure in the first half but kept a clean sheet with a little bit of luck and took it over in the second. I think we showed great signs."

While Whitecaps FC haven’t won since First Kick, they did record a second shutout on the season, while maintaining a back four of Alain Rochat, Greg Janicki, Mouloud Akloul and Jonathan Leathers for a third consecutive game.

“They were good (against Chicago),” Thordarson said. “I felt in the beginning of the game in the first half, in the first half hour maybe that I saw some signs of them being tired. But as the game went on I felt that they played better and better.”

But U.S. international center back Jay Demerit could be ready to return to the lineup for the first time since April 10. "He is very close for Wednesday in terms of playing some minutes," Thordarson said. "Whether he will start or not we'll see."

MLS GAME INFORMATION

The Whitecaps are in a stretch of four weeks when they will play two games in a week – and for the second time in that period, a trip covering three time zones will be involved. When the ‘Caps and Revolution met in April, the Revolution were at home both the weekend before and the weekend following.

“We get good rest in between games,” Dunfield said. “It's not an easy schedule, there's no hiding from that, but if we can get a result at home against San Jose [on Wednesday], it will have been a good week.”

While Whitecaps FC haven’t won in league play since the season opener, they have reached the final of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, where they will take on Toronto FC. The series will be played over two legs May 18 (in Vancouver) and May 25 (in Toronto), with the winner gaining a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League.

"It gives us a starting point and gives the changing room a little lift," said midfielder Terry Dunfield. "That's two games in a row with good results and hopefully we can keep this going. In the second half I thought we came out a lot more positive and this is what we need to do in the league.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes return to action after a week off, their last match a 1-0 loss to Philadelphia Union that stretched their losing skid to three games. The Quakes have 5 points from 7 games on the season, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

Union went a man down just before halftime when defender Jordan Harvey shown a straight red card by referee Mark Geiger after a clash with a sliding Chris Leitch.

But the home side scored the game's lone goal from the penalty spot in the 76th minute. Union midfielder Amobi Okugo dribbled into the box and attempted a cross that appeared to hit San Jose defender Jason Hernandez in the hand, and after Geiger pointed to the spot, Sebastien Le Toux converted.

Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made five changes to the team that lost 2-1 to Chivas USA at Buck Shaw Stadium. In came Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Brad Ring, Steven Lenhart, Bobby Burling and Justin Morrow; out went Ramiro Corrales, Sam Cronin, Khari Stephenson, Simon Dawkins and Bobby Convey.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Chris Leitch, Bobby Burling, Jason Hernandez, Justin Morrow - Chris Wondolowski, Brad Ring, Brandon McDonald (Sam Cronin 64), Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Ryan Johnson 72) - Steven Lenhart, Scott Sealy (Bobby Convey 58)

TEAM NEWS San Jose returns to action after a weekend off and trying to put the skids on a three-game losing streak, their

last match a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia on April 30. The game’s lone goal came from a penalty kick after a handball in the box, after Union had gone down a man in the first half.

"I went over and tried to make a tackle and break up a cross," defender Jason Hernandez said. "I didn't see the ball, and I didn't make a play for it. I just tried to block the cross. I've played a lot of games, and that's the first time I've had that called against me."

The Quakes were able to manage only a season-low six attempts at goal, and put only one on target. "We had some chances, and we moved the ball well at times, but it didn't translate," Quakes coach Frank

Yallop said. "You have to keep working and moving ahead. I saw some good things (against Philadelphia)." The Quakes will be without midfield creator Simon Dawkins for up to a couple of months after he underwent

surgery on both calves last week to correct compartment syndrome. Dawkins has two goals this season after arriving on loan from English side Tottenham Hotspur.

Since league play, the Quakes were able to be the first team to come away from Jeld-Wen Field with a result, defeating the Portland Timbers 1-0 in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match on May 3. The game’s lone goal was scored by Ike Opara in the 120th minute, heading home a Sam Cronin cross.

Here’s the Earthquakes team: Andrew Weber, Steven Beitashour, Bobby Burling, Ike Opara, Ramiro Corrales, Khari Stephenson (Steven Lenhart 83), Sam Cronin, Brad Ring, Bobby Convey (Justin Morrow 94), Ryan Johnson (Ellis McLoughlin 111), Chris Wondolowski.

“We defended very well last weekend against Philadelphia and were a little unlucky to concede a goal and tonight we had another good performance defensively. I think we are back to doing the right things defensively and that is a positive,” Yallop said.

The win was the Quakes’ first-ever in a U.S. Open Cup play-in game. San Jose now faces the Chicago Fire in another Open Cup play-in match, with the winner going into the Open Cup tournament proper.

“I was very happy with the performance (against Portland),” Yallop said. “We possessed the ball very well and really controlled the game. I am glad that we got the goal at the end because if it goes to penalties anything can happen. I feel that we deserved the win.”

WHITECAPS FC MATCH NOTES

MATCH NOTES• This is the first ever competitive match between Whitecaps FC and San Jose Earthquakes. • The next meeting between these two teams is Wednesday, July 20, at San Clara's Buck Shaw Stadium.• These teams met three times in exhibition play from 1998 to 2003, with San Jose winning all three (in 1998 the teams were named

Vancouver 86ers and San Jose Clash). In the September 1, 2003 meeting at Swangard Stadium, Vancouver led 3-0 early in the second half, before San Jose stormed back to win it 4-3. Today's near side assistant referee Kevin Duliba was also an assistant referee in the 2003 exhibition meeting.

• Back in the North American Soccer League (NASL), Vancouver Whitecaps played San Jose Earthquakes 25 times, with a record of 14-11 and 8-4 at home (in 1983-84 the team was named Golden Bay Earthquakes). This includes Vancouver's first ever game, a 2-1 loss to San Jose on May 5, 1974 in front of 17,343 at old Empire Stadium.

• This is the 41st competitive match between Whitecaps FC and teams from the Bay Area, with Vancouver leading 22-17-1 overall and 11-7-1 in Vancouver. The last meeting in Vancouver was a 2-2 draw on April 28, 2007 at Swangard Stadium against the USL-1 San Francisco based California Victory (with Martin Nash scoring for Whitecaps FC).

• Vancouver have a record of 8-16-10 against MLS opposition in all competitions and friendlies dating back to 1998.

WHITECAPS FC NOTES• Whitecaps FC are winless in their last eight MLS matches (0-4-4). This is the team's longest winless streak since a 12-game

(0-5-7) dry spell in 2007. However the 'Caps did just claim their first ever road point with a 0-0 draw at Chicago Fire.• Whitecap FC are coming off a successful semi-final series in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship against the second-tier

Montreal Impact. Vancouver won 1-0 in Montreal on April 27 and then drew 1-1 after extra time at home on Wednesday May 4, to take the series 2-1 on aggregate. Whitecaps FC now face Toronto FC in the two game championship starting here next Wednesday. The winner advances to the CONCACAF Champions League.

• Whitecaps FC became the fourth team in MLS history to gain a point after trailing by three or more goals, in the 3-3 draw with Sporting Kansas City on April 2. It matched the largest comeback from a deficit in MLS history.

• On Thursday, April 28, Whitecaps FC signed ten-year MLS veteran and former US international midfielder #33 Peter Vagenas. The 33-year-old played the past two seasons with Seattle Sounders FC and before that was with LA Galaxy for eight seasons. He has yet to make his Whitecaps FC debut.

• Midfielder #9 Davide Chiumiento is second in Major League Soccer (MLS) in assists with 0G 5A in 7GP and 488 minutes. He trails Brad Davis of Houston Dynamo who has six.

• Designated Player signing and forward #29 Eric Hassli celebrated his 30th birthday last week. He has 3G 0A • Forward #37 Camilo leads Whitecaps FC in scoring with 3G 1A. He was named MLS Player of the Week for week three after

scoring 2G 1A in the 3-3 draw with Sporting Kansas City, as he became the first player in MLS history to score twice in stoppage time.

• Defenders #25 Jonathan Leathers and #4 Alain Rochat have played every minute this season for Whitecaps FC.• Defender and captain #6 Jay DeMerit is recovering from a groin injury he suffered playing for the US national team in a 0-1

loss to Paraguay in Nashville, Tennessee. • Striker Atiba Harris underwent successful knee surgery to his right meniscus on Tuesday, April 26. Harris has been one of

Whitecaps FC's top attackers this season with 2G 3A in 5GP.• 17-year-old forward #17 Omar Salgado got his first start and scored his first goal in the 1-2 loss away to Columbus Crew

Saturday April 30 . Salgado was the top pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and was cleared by FIFA to play for Whitecaps FC this season without having to wait until he turns 18.

• Goalkeeper Jay Nolly earned his second career MLS shutout in a 0-0 draw against Chicago Fire on Saturday, May 7.• Winger #22 Shea Salinas began his MLS career with San Jose, playing 46 games in 2008-09, scoring 2G 5A.• Goalkeeper Joe Cannon began his MLS career with San Jose, playing 109 games from 1998-2002, and another 70 from 2008-10.• Midfielder #15 Phillipe Davies is 14 minutes away from reaching 2,000 in his Whitecaps FC career.• Defender #14 Greg Janicki is 29 minutes away from reaching 1,000 in his MLS career.• Goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre has been called up to the US U-20 national team for a training camp in France starting Sunday.• Forward #23 Long Tan became the first Chinese-born to play in MLS when he subbed in at 88' in Philadelphia on March 26.

SAN JOSE NOTES• Midfielder #17 Joey Gjertsen started his career with Whitecaps FC in 2005, playing three seasons and leading Vancouver to

the 2006 USL-1 Championship as league MVP. He is tied for 27th in Vancouver carer scoring with 19G 12A in 81GP. He held the club ironman record with 78 consecutive games, until it was surpassed last season by Jay Nolly, who upped the mark to 80. Gjertsen's streak was broken when he was traded to Montreal Impact, where he played against Vancouver from 2007-2009.

• Players Whitecaps FC have previously seen also include: goalkeeper Andrew Weber who played for Montreal Impact in USL-1 from 2006-08; defender #14 Brandon McDonald who was on the bench for LA Galaxy in a 2008 exhibition match in Edmonton; defender #12 Ramiro Corrales who played the full 90 minutes for San Jose in the 2003 exhibition meeting; and midfielder #4 Sam Cronin who played against Whitecaps FC in the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship with Toronto FC.

San Jose Earthquakes at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, May11, 2011 7 p.m. PT Scoring First under Yallop During Frank Yallop's first tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes were one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-1 from 2001-03 when scoring the first goal of the game. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. Yallop's team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010 and so far in 2011 is 1-1 when netting the first goal. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a half-time lead after beating FC Dallas on March 26, 2011. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 66-1-13 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 8-0-1 in 2003, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 7-0-3 in 2005. Despite holding a halftime lead on May 10, 2008 vs. Columbus, the Quakes fell 3-2. That game marked the team's first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime lead. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 88-6-19 in their last 117 matches when scoring first. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, went undefeated last year with a 12-0-2 record and are 1-1 this season. In 2005, San Jose went undefeated at 14-0-5 when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. The team continued that trend in 2003, possessing an 11-0-1 mark in the regular season when they scored the first goal. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the top mark in MLS. The Quakes gave up their lead and lost to Los Angeles on July 4, 2004 for the first time since July 27, 2002 against Kansas City. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting a 7-0-0 record. Dawkins Undergoes Successful Surgery San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Simon Dawkins underwent a successful bilateral fasciotomy on Thursday, May 5. Dawkins had missed San Jose's match against the Philadelphia Union the previous Saturday due to lower leg compartment syndrome. Earthquakes team orthopedist Dr. Mike Oberlander performed the surgery at the Sequoia Surgical Pavilion. Dawkins was acquired on loan from club partner Tottenham Hotspur on March 16. He immediately made his presence felt with goals against Seattle Sounders FC on April 2 and Toronto FC on April 9. His strike against the Reds was nominated for MLS Goal of the Week. Quakes Top Timbers in U.S. Open Cup Qualifier, 1-0 The San Jose Earthquakes pulled out a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over the Portland Timbers last week at JELD-WEN Field in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-in match. Ike Opara netted the winning goal in the final minute of overtime, heading home a cross from Sam Cronin. Andrew Weber made three saves, including a couple of big ones early in the match, to earn the shutout in his first appearance of the season. The win marks the Quakes first-ever victory in a U.S. Open Cup Play-in game. San Jose moves on to play the Chicago Fire in another Open Cup Play-in match. A win against the Fire would put the Quakes into the main draw of the Open Cup. Academy Update: U16s Sweep, Within One Game of 2nd Place Four different goal-scorers got on the board as the San Jose Earthquakes U16 Academy team trounced local rivals De Anza Force 4-1 on Saturday. William Villa and Cristian Cruz scored within four minutes of each other in the first half, while Jesus Garcia and Jonathan Monterroso each tallied in the second half. Earlier in the day, the U18 teams of the respective academies battled to a 1-1 draw. Carlos Gonzalez got on the board for the Earthquakes U18s after 27 minutes, but United States youth international Stefano Bonomo in the second half. On Sunday, the U16s recorded their second consecutive win, a 2-1 victory over Santa Cruz Breakers U16s. With a win next Saturday against Cal Odyssey, the U16s could move into second place. In the late match on Sunday, Michael Bernardi and James Callinan scored in a losing effort, falling 4-2 to Santa Cruz Breakers U18s. Callinan has seen time in Earthquakes senior team Reserve League matches this season. Wondolowski Moving Up Quakes’ All-Time Scoring Charts San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski continues to inch up the franchise’s all-time scoring charts. Wondo’s goal against Chivas USA on Saturday was his 24th with the Quakes, fifth-most in Quakes history. Next up on the list is current Houston Dynamo striker Brian Ching, who tallied 25 goals during his time at the Earthquakes from 2003-05. The career leader for the club is Ronald Cerritos, who notched 61 from 1997-2001, when the team was known as the Clash, and one year in 2005. Lenhart, Ampaipitakwong, Morrow Make First Starts With Earthquakes Forward Steven Lenhart, midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong and defender Justin Morrow made their first career starts with the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday against the Philadelphia Union. Lenhart had come off the bench against Chivas USA the previous week to make his San Jose debut at Buck Shaw Stadium in the 80th minute and played a full 90 minutes against the Union, recording the team’s lone shot on goal. Ampaipitakwong, a rookie selected in the second round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by San Jose, played 72 minutes at left and right mid before subbing off for Ryan Johnson. Morrow, a second-round pick in 2010 from Notre Dame, played the full 90 minutes at left back in his fourth appearance with the club. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders List for Shutouts Jon Busch is No. 8 on the MLS career shutouts list with 54. The Earthquakes’ starting goalkeeper has recorded eight clean sheets in San Jose. He earned 21 shutouts during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire and had 25 in five seasons with the Columbus Crew (2002-06).
