Sapong fought off a challenge and managed to extend his left foot to apply the finish past San Jose ‘keeper Jon Busch.

Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop kept his team the same for a third consecutive game, maintaining the group that defeated D.C. United 4-2 at RFK Stadium.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-1-1): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Bobby Burling, Bobby Convey - Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Ellis McLoughlin 46 / Scott Sealy 89), Sam Cronin (Simon Dawkins 46), Brad Ring, Ramiro Corrales - Khari Stephenson - Steven Lenhart.

TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes lost for the first time since April 30, a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia Union, ending a six-game

undefeated streak in league play and eight games in all competitions.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“We’ve lost one game in seven, so that’s a good stat,” Quakes coach Frank Yallop said. “We don’t want to lose any more in a row, obviously, but you’re going to lose games. That’s why we play. We’ve just got to bounce back and make sure we put this behind us and look at the performance as an individual thing.”

That loss was the last time the Earthquakes were shut out, having scored 14 goals in the six-game unbeaten run. They are second in MLS with 1.43 goals per game, behind the New York Red Bulls (1.60), and tied for third in overall goals scored with 20.

"We had some chances to score," said Yallop. "We had been putting in those chances lately, but it just didn't happen (against KC)."

In the previous two games, with Chris Wondolowski away with the U.S. national team on CONCACAF Gold Cup duty, Steven Lenhart had scored four goals.

“If you watch the game before, where Lenny got a hat trick and an assist, you’re not going to say, ‘Leave him alone when he’s around the goal,’” Yallop said. “You’ve got to be sure you’re going to be on him, and I thought they did that.”

Simon Dawkins had also scored goals in back-to-back games before the shutout. He has made three consecutive substitute appearances after missing five matches to injury.

“Simon could have scored two goals,” Yallop said. “If he scores those two, we’re having a different conversation right now.”

The Earthquakes return home for the original California Clasico riding a three-game home winning streak at Buck Shaw Stadium, coming off successive victories against Houston, New England and Columbus.

“We can look at the work we’ve done over the last several weeks and be proud of [creating] a foundation of what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play,” Quakes defender Jason Hernandez said. “We weren’t going to win every game for the rest of the season, so it’s important that we really lick our wounds and really understand some things that we could have done better, get back to work and hopefully start another streak next week.”

LA GALAXY The LA Galaxy stretched their undefeated streak to nine games, rolling to a 3-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Galaxy have 34 points from 18 games on the season, leading the Western Conference. LAST MATCH

The Galaxy took the lead in the 25th minute. Miguel López placed a deft ball behind the Rapids defense for Chris Birchall, who was able to cross into Drew Moor’s path and he turned it into his own net from close range.

In the 42nd minute, it was 2-0. Galaxy midfielder Juninho picked the ball up and placed a right-footed cracker from 25 yards out into the corner of Matt Pickens’ net.

The old combination of Omar Cummings and Conor Casey proved fruitful in the 64th minute as the Jamaican dribbled into the penalty area and hit a low, right-footed shot against the post. The ball rebounded into Casey’s path and he tapped into the empty net.

The Rapids, however, were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute when Caleb Folan was sent off for a harsh challenge on Juninho. The Galaxy capitalized in the 81st minute as second-half substitute Chad Barrett latched onto a cross from Todd Dunivant, who was set free on the left by Juninho, and Barrett finished inside the penalty area to seal the game.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made two changes to the team that played to a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC at The Home Depot Center. Juninho and Mike Magee came into the team for David Beckham and Chad Barrett.

LA GALAXY (4-4-2): Josh Saunders - Sean Franklin, Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza (Gregg Berhalter 83), Todd Dunivant - Chris Birchall, Juninho (Jovan Kirovski 81), Michael Stephens, Mike Magee - Juan Pablo Angel, Miguel Lopez (Chad Barrett 61).

TEAM NEWS The Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (5-0-4), matching the longest in MLS this season.

Colorado had also gone nine games without defeat – before losing to the Galaxy. Already missing Landon Donovan and Donovan Ricketts to CONCACAF Gold Cup duty, the Galaxy were

without David Beckham, who remained in Los Angeles suffering from back spasms. He was kept out of training for the second half of the week heading into the Colorado match.

“It is a team game. If you are missing players, you are missing players -- it is all a part of it ...,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “We were not shorthanded today. If we would have lost today, our excuse could not have been that we were missing players. They were missing some players as well, but I think that our team played well. It is a team game, and we don’t put our heads down when we are missing someone.”

Arena said Beckham is unlikely to play in the San Jose match as well. Beckham has missed four matches in all this season – one to suspension, one while in England for the Gary Neville testimonial, one while being rested and then the Colorado game.

Page 5: SJ-LA Game Guide

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“That will continue to be our strategy, to bring him back when he’s ready to play. If that takes another week, it takes another week,” Arena said. “We have a lot of games ahead so we’re not going to push anything with anybody.”

Juninho, who had missed the home match with Toronto FC because he returned to his homeland of Brazil to get married, returned to the lineup and scored his third goal of the season.

It was the first goal for Juninho since scoring in the first two games of the season (March 15 at Seattle, March 20 vs. New England); all three of his goals have come on long-range strikes.

“Juninho’s strike was a special one. A two-goal cushion going to the second half, and Colorado certainly came out hard. They got their goal, and we hung on. The red card certainly helped us as well,” Arena said. “It was a good, intelligent performance on our part.”

Veteran center back Gregg Berhalter made his 2011 debut, coming on for the final seven minutes. He had been an unused substitute for the previous seven league matches, while getting a regular game with the Galaxy reserves.

LA GALAXY GAME NOTES – June 25, 2011

Television: FOX Soccer with Mark Rogondino (play-by-play) Chris Klein (analyst) and Keith Bleyer (sideline) Galaxy English Radio: KTLK 1150 AM and www.lagalaxy.com with Joe Tutino (Pregame show starts at 3 p.m.) Galaxy Spanish Radio: KWKU 1220 AM with Rolando Gonzalez and Armando Aguayo (Pregame show starts at 3 p.m.)

ONE FROM TEN: With the 3-1 win at Colorado on Saturday, the Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, tying the mark for the longest unbeaten streak in MLS this season. The Rapids entered Saturday’s game with the longest unbeaten streak in the league at nine games, but that streak ended with the loss to the Galaxy.

With a win or a draw against San Jose this weekend, the Galaxy, who are 5-0-4 during their current streak, can extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games, becoming the first team to tally a double digit unbeaten streak. This would be the sixth unbeaten streak of 10 games or more in club history. No other MLS team has more than four unbeaten streaks of 10 games or more since the start of MLS in 1996. The Galaxy last had an unbeaten streak of 10 games or more last season when they tied a club record by going 15 straight games without a loss a streak that began in October 2009 before finally being snapped with a loss at Real Salt Lake in June 2010.

BREAKING OUT ON THE ROAD: The Galaxy had their best offensive output in a road game in more than a year last Saturday, beating Colorado 3-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. After losing their first three games at the Commerce City, Colo. stadium, the Galaxy are unbeaten there in their last three, drawing 1-1 in 2009 before winning 1-0 there last season and then again last Saturday. The three goals scored by the Galaxy equaled their second best offensive showing of the year, beaten only by the 4-1 home win over Sporting Kansas City on May 14.

Since the start of the 2004 season, the Galaxy have scored at least three goals in a road games at least once a year, but this was the first time that they had done so in Colorado since 2002. Last year the Galaxy recorded their biggest win of the season, defeating Seattle 4-0 at Qwest Field. In 2009, they had their best road result of the season, beating New York 3-1 in their final visit to Giants Stadium. The previous year, the Galaxy recorded a 5-1 win at FC Dallas and won 3-0 over San Jose in Oakland. In 2007, the Galaxy scored four times at Giants Stadium, only to lose 5-4 to the Red Bulls.

From 2004-06, the Galaxy scored three or more goals on the road five times, doing so three times against D.C. United and once against both Dallas and Real Salt Lake.

RIVALRY RETURNS: Saturday’s game between the Galaxy and Earthquakes will be the first meeting of the year between the two longtime MLS rivals. The Galaxy and Earthquakes have met 46 times in the regular season and eight more in the postseason for a total of 54 past meetings, which is more than LA have played against every MLS team except for Colorado Dallas and Kansas City.

In the 46 regular season meetings between the sides, the Galaxy have a 24-15-7 record and are outscoring their rivals 71-60. Since the Earthquakes returned to MLS in 2008, they have met eight times, with each winning three times in addition to a pair of draws.

Only four current Galaxy players have ever scored a goal for the club against San Jose, though none of those four are expected to be in the starting lineup for the club on Saturday. Landon Donovan has six goals against his former club but he is still on international duty with the U.S. National Team. David Beckham has one goal against San Jose but he missed last weekend’s game and has been limited in training this week because of back spasms. Bryan Jordan and Jovan Kirovski each also have one goal against the Earthquakes, with each tallying in the Bay Area in 2009. However, neither of those players have started a game for the club this season, combining for 13 appearances and 161 minutes played.

NEW CAPTAIN: The Galaxy used their fourth different captain of the season in Saturday’s win over the Rapids, with Todd Dunivant taking the captain’s armband. This was the first time in his Galaxy career that Dunivant had worn the captain’s armband for a regular season game. Dunivant joins David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Donovan Ricketts as the four Galaxy captains this season and is the 19th different player to wear the armband in club history.

Dunivant, who has played the full 90 minutes in every Galaxy game this season, did so again against the Rapids, starting at left back and assisting on Chad Barrett’s goal in the 80th minute. That was Dunivant’s third assist of the season, placing him in a tie with Chad Barrett and Miguel Lopez for second on the team behind David Beckham. It was just the second time in his nine-year MLS career that he recorded assists in consecutive games. Dunivant last tallied assists in back-to-back games as a rookie in 2003 when he had a career-high six assists as a member of the Earthquakes.

Dunivant may wear the captain’s armband once again on Saturday against his former club with Donovan remaining on international duty, David Beckham suffering with back spasms, though Donovan Ricketts, who was the captain for the 2-1 win in Chicago on April 17, has returned from international duty.

JUNINHO BACK ON THE BOARD: Galaxy midfielder Juninho scored his first goal in nearly three months last weekend against the Rapids, tallying the eventual game-winner late in the first half. With the Galaxy leading 1-0, Juninho collected a poor clearance for a Colorado defender before lashing a right-footed shot past Matt Pickens from 30 yards out.

The goal was Juninho’s third of the season, eclipsing his total of two from last year, with all three coming from long range blasts from outside the box. Four of his five career MLS goals have been scored from outside the box, with the fifth coming from just inside the area against Dallas in last year’s regular season finale at The Home Depot Center.

Late in the second half, after returning to the field following a tackle that earned a red card for Colorado’s Caleb Folan, Juninho stole the ball off the foot of a Rapids’ defender and played a pass through the Colorado defense for Todd Dunivant, who set up Chad Barrett for LA’s third goal of the game. That was Juninho’s second assist of the season, equaling his total from 2010.

LA GALAXY GAME NOTES – June 25, 2011

RICKETTS RETURNS: The Galaxy welcomed goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts back to training on Tuesday following Jamaica’s 2-0 loss to the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup last week. Ricketts has missed each of the Galaxy’s last three games while on international duty, with Josh Saunders getting the start in each. In those three games, the Galaxy went 1-0-2 and allowed three goals while keeping one clean sheet.

Ricketts played in three of Jamaica’s four games at the Gold Cup, allowing just two goals while shutting out Grenada and Guatemala, helping his country finish atop Group B.

In his 11 games with the Galaxy this season, Ricketts has a 6-1-4 record with six clean sheets and an MLS-best 0.55 goals against average, having allowed just six goals. In the seven games that Ricketts has missed because of injury or international duty, the Galaxy are 3-1-3 with two shutouts and are allowing 1.29 goals per game. He has kept a clean sheet in each of his last three starts and have not allowed a goal in 276 minutes of action, which is the seventh longest shutout streak for a single goalkeeper in MLS this season.

ONE MORE FOR DONOVAN: The Galaxy will once again be without Landon Donovan for Saturday’s game against the Earthquakes. While the Galaxy are in Northern California, Donovan will be in Southern California with the U.S. National Team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at the Rose Bowl.

This will be the fourth straight game that Donovan misses and the eighth of the season. In the previous seven games that Donovan has missed, the Galaxy are 2-1-4, including 1-0-2 this month while he has been at the Gold Cup.

Donovan has played in all five of the U.S.’s games at the Gold Cup, making three starts and tallying two assists. He has come off the bench in each of the last two games and set up his team’s only goal in the semifinal victory over Panama on Wednesday. He will return to training with the Galaxy next week following the conclusion of the tournament.

BERHALTER DEBUTS: Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter made his 2011 MLS debut, playing the final seven minutes of the 3-1 win in Colorado last weekend. He had been an unused substitute in each of the previous seven games but had not played since suffering a knee injury in a preseason friendly against Vancouver.

SET AT THE BACK: Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena used the same back four of Sean Franklin, Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza and Todd Dunivant from right to left across the back, for the 11th straight game last weekend in Colorado. However, one change was made to that group late in the game with Gregg Berhalter replacing A.J. DeLaGarza in the 83rd minute. That was the first time since the injury to Leonardo in Chicago on April 17 that those four had not been on the field together.

In the 11 games that group has played together this season, they have recorded a 6-1-4 record while keeping five clean sheets and conceding a total of just eight goals on just 41 shots on goal in those games.

OPEN CUP QUEST BEGINS TUESDAY: The Galaxy’s quest for a third U.S. Open Cup title will begin on Tuesday, when they host the USL Pro League’s L.A. Blues at Titan Stadium in Fullerton. The Blues, who feature four former Galaxy players, reached the Third Round by defeating the Ventura County Fusion 1-0 behind a goal from Israel Sesay, who played for the Galaxy from 2007-08.

The 2001 and 2005 Open Cup champions, the Galaxy reached the quarterfinals of the competition in 2010 before falling to the eventual champion Seattle Sounders FC. If the Galaxy advance past the Blues next week, the will face either Seattle or the PDL’s Kitsap Pumas in the quarterfinals on July 12.

IRONMAN DUNIVANT: After once again playing the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 win in Colorado last weekend, Todd Dunivant remains the only Galaxy player to start every game this season for the club and play every minute of each. Dunivant has now played the full 90 minutes in all 18 of his team’s games this season, giving him a league-high 1,620 minutes played.

In addition to Dunivant, only Chad Barrett and Sean Franklin have appeared in all 18 Galaxy games this season while those three, along with A.J. DeLaGarza, Frankie Hejduk, Mike Magee and Josh Saunders have been in the 18-man squad for all 18 games.

McBEAN IN MEXICO: Galaxy forward Jack McBean is currently in Mexico with the U.S. Under-17 National Team for the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico. Signed as a Home Grown Player by the Galaxy in January, McBean has made one Reserve League appearance for the Galaxy while spending much of the year training with Wilmer Cabrera’s U-17 squad.

He has been an unused substitute for each of the first two group games that the U.S. has played, a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic and a 2-1 loss to Uzbekistan. The U.S., who are tied with New Zealand for the top spot in Group D with three points, will face New Zealand in their final group game on Saturday.

That game will be played at the same time as the game between the Czech Republic and Uzbekistan, with each of those teams also having three points. The top two teams from each of the six groups, as well as the four best third place teams, with qualify for the Round of 16, which begins on June 29.

FIRST WIN FOR RESERVES: The LA Galaxy grabbed their first win of the season in MLS Reserve League play on Monday with a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at The Home Depot Center. Gregg Berhalter and Adadm Cristman had goals on either side of halftime, while Omar Salgado pulled one back late for the Whitecaps. However, that goal was not enough to deny the Galaxy their first win of the season as they improved to 1-4-0 on the season.

The Galaxy will be back in Reserve League action at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5 when they host Seattle Sounders FC on University Field #1 at The Home Depot Center.

THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE: For the first time in his career as an MLS referee, Juan Guzman will referee a Galaxy game when he takes charge of Saturday’s game in San Jose. He will be assisted by Fabio Tovar and Kevin Duliba with Baldomero Toledo serving as the fourth official.

Guzman will be the 16th different referee for the Galaxy’s 19 games this season.

FOLLOWING THE SUPPORTERS’ SHIELD: The Galaxy won their third Supporters’ Shield in 2010, finishing with an MLS-best record of 18-7-5 for 59 points. LA, who lead MLS with 29 points so far this season, are now tied with Columbus for the second most Supporters’ Shields in MLS history with three, one less than D.C. United.

In 1999, after reaching their first Supporters’ Shield, the Galaxy finished first in the Western Conference with a 20-12 record and went on to reach MLS Cup. In 2003, after winning their second Supporters’ Shield and their first MLS Cup, LA finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 9-12-9 record before falling to San Jose in the Conference Semifinals.

Since the trophy was first awarded, only two teams; D.C. United in 2006 and 2007 and Columbus in 2008 and 2009 have ever repeated as Supporters’ Shield winners.
