Most GSB alumni have fond memories and stories to tell about their time completing the program, but it’s not usual to hear of one who had a Pro Football Hall of Famer as a roommate. Jim Hoskins, CEO and chairman of Baxter State Bank, Baxter Springs, Kansas can claim that honor. Between 1984-1986 the GSB graduate, shared a room with the man he opines to be the most punishing center who ever played the game of football, Jim Langer, who was the starting center for the Miami Dolphins from 1970-1979, earning him two Super Bowl

rings. Hoskins and Langer, who had retired from football and went to work for a bank in St. Cloud, Minnesota, developed a friendship that would result in Hoskins attending Langer’s induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

“There were about eight of us that really became close and we all attended,” Hoskins says. “We did keep in touch for a while and for years had reunions and it was a lot of fun.

In 1984, Hoskins was just beginning his banking career at American State Bank in Oswego, Kansas, where his mentor at the bank and GSB alum, Dick Stevens, advised him to get a GSB education. Hoskins says Stevens knew he’d outgrow American State Bank and supported him in getting the credentials Hoskins felt he needed to further his banking career.

“My GSB education broadened my view of the banking world,” Hoskins says. “My exposure before going to GSB was certainly small, community banks only. Probably the most important thing I got from attending GSB was exposure to people from all sizes of financial institutions as well as regulators.”

Hoskins credits his classmates for his educational experience as much as GSB. “There’s the knowledge that comes with the classroom setting; there is the knowledge that comes with researching your case problems or take home problems, but mostly it is just the resource of other bankers,” he says. “Once you’re exposed to the world of banking it’s kind of like going to a library.”

Prior to entering banking Hoskins ran the family farm while simultaneously, along with his brother Jim, running the Chevrolet dealership that had been in their family for three generations.

Hoskins says the most taxing part of the program for him was balancing school, work and family while completing take-home problems each summer. He recalls, after being immersed in the classroom experience, resuming his life with work, a young family and a ranch to run. “I’m a 20- hours-per-day guy sometimes, so to take the time at 30 plus years old to sit down and do case work, a problem or research something, that’s the most challenging.”

But Hoskins was to be rewarded for the challenge, not only by his surprise roommate Jim Langer, but by being in a class taught by

GSB’s, Herbert V. Prochnow. “It was like having Stephen Hawking or someone else who is revered as one of the best in their field,” he says. “That was the highlight.”

It was these experiences at what he likes to call “The Harvard of Banking Schools” that induced his daughter Hilary, a case manager for FDIC, to apply. She began the program in 2016 and will complete it in 2018.

Outside of the office, Hoskins enjoys traveling with his wife of almost 42 years, Buggy, horseback riding, scuba diving, golfing and riding motorcycles. As if he isn’t busy enough, as an advocate for the banking industry, he is on the community bank board of the American Bankers Association (ABA) and 2016-2017 chairman of the Kansas Bankers Association (KBA).

“A couple of years ago I made the decision that I was going to get out of banking before I got too crotchety or whatever the right term is for an old banker who sits around here and just gets mad at people!” he quips. “I had had the opportunity to be considered for the chairmanship of the Kansas Bankers Association before and I turned it down because I wasn’t ready. One day it dawned on me about three years ago that I’m ready. Being the KBA chairman was something I felt I wanted to give back to the industry that’s been so good to me.” n
