Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time — February 16, 2020

“Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything

against you, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come to offer your gift.”: A

woman’s life was plunged into an abyss of sorrow when her husband was murdered by an un-

known hitchhiker; the murderer was never found and brought to justice. After she fell into a

deep depression because of her grief, she realized that she had to do something to bring closure

and begin the healing process. So, she wrote an open letter to the slayer of her husband and posted it on Facebook.

One part of the letter was especially moving, “Please, if you see this, find a church where you can be alone. Take this

to prayer: know that God forgives you and my family forgives you. Then, go out and make something worthwhile of

the rest of your life.” This woman’s great spirit of forgiveness and mercy challenges us to ask, “To whom in my life

do I need to make an act of forgiveness?” We must remember that sin cannot be undone, but only forgiven.

A point to ponder: A praying man is a powerful man.

#20. The gift of the sacrament is at the same time a vocation and commandment for the Christian spouses, that they

may remain faithful to each other forever, beyond every trial and difficulty, in generous obedience to the holy will of

the Lord: “What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.”

in the Faith & Family Room of Saint Mary’s Parish Center (lower level). The menu includes: Insalata

mista; Pasta all’Amatriciana; Homemade Cannoli (dessert); and Vino/Acqua/Caffe. The meal is a free will offering

and the funds raised are for youth activities throughout the year. We will see you there and tell your reluctant Nor-

wegian friends that you are taking them to a lutefisk dinner and then shock their system with good food instead!

The ABC’s of our Catholic Faith: Benediction: In the general use of this term, it means “to offer a

blessing”. Some of these include the benediction at the end of the Holy Mass; the benediction at

the conclusion of a Sacramental Mass (such as a wedding or the First Mass of a newly ordained

priest); or the benediction at a public or civic event (graduation, memorial service, etc.). In a more

particular use of the term, Benediction refers to the solemn blessing with the Blessed Sacrament

in the monstrance, which concludes a time of Eucharistic Adoration. The grace of this benediction is that unlike the

other forms, which involve the mediation of a member of the clerical state, the Benediction of the Blessed Sacra-

ment comes directly from God, because we believe that Jesus is truly and substantially present in the Blessed Sacra-

The ABC’s of our Catholic Faith continued…

Bilocation: This refers to the apparition of a saint in two different places at the same time, to offer a spiritual gift, consola-

tion, or admonition. It is believed that one of our great contemporary saints, Saint Padre Pio (St. Pio of Pietrelcina), had

this spiritual gift. A number of times, it was reported that he was in his friary at prayer or work but was also ascertained

to be present by the bedside of individuals who were sick or dying. This gift has been granted to few saints in the life of

the Church (Saints Martin de Porres, Francis Xavier, Joseph of Cupertino, Lydwine of Schiedam, and Venerable Mary of

Agreda), but pray that it be granted to Fr. Gary. Wouldn’t it be great if he could be teaching a CCD class and also be pre-

sent at someone’s home for a piece of apple pie and coffee? Or better yet, invite my entire CCD class and me to your

home for apple pie and coffee. Save the biggest piece for the pastor!

Blessed candles: Applied in a specific sense, these are the candles blessed on the Feast of Candlemas (February 2nd, the

Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord) and designated for use in the homes of the faithful. In the agrarian society of Medi-

eval Europe, these candles were most commonly lit for protection from storms. But, the lighting of blessed candles ex-

panded into the other great spiritual and temporal needs of Catholic families. For example, in Catholic Ireland, when the

Catholic Faith was suppressed by the English occupying force, blessed candles were used to designate homes where fugi-

tive Catholic priests were welcomed to celebrate a clandestine Holy Mass. The English soldiers were told that the candles

were a pious custom, to welcome Joseph and Mary to the home. They dismissed it as mere superstition. Little did they

know that the priests they were trying to round up and arrest were in that very home, welcomed by the light of candles

in the windows!

Blessed candles, in a broader sense, refers to all of the candles blessed for usage in the sacramental and spiritual life of

the Church. They are as follows:

The Paschal (Easter Candle): This candle is lit from the fire of the Easter Vigil and remains lit at

every Mass for fifty days until Pentecost. Lit in the darkness of the night of the Easter Vigil, it

powerfully reminds all Christians that the light of Christ will always triumph over the darkness of

sin and death. This is why it is lit at every Catholic Baptism and funeral liturgy as well.

Baptism candles: At Baptisms, it is lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the parents and

godparents, as a reminder to them to keep the flame of faith always burning brightly in the life of the child. It is a pious

custom to light the baptismal candle each year on the anniversary of one’s Baptism, to thank God for the gift of new life

received in Baptism.

Sanctuary candle: This sanctuary light or lamp (commonly red in color) is in the sanctuary of the church, to designate the

Real Presence of Jesus Christ, who is present in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament.

Vigil lights: These candles, often associated with a donation or offering, can be found in candle stands

in a church or in a chapel or sacred space near the church proper. The candles may be a larger version,

lasting for days, or a smaller version, lasting for mere hours. When lit, they are accompanied by a pray-

er and the offering of an intention. The beauty of these candles is that when one must leave the church

to continue the needs of daily life, they remain as a continued offering of one’s prayers to the Lord.

Lucerna sacerdotis (“candle of the priest”): These are the candles on the German Chocolate birthday cake made for the

parish priest. Canon law requires only the finest cocoa and richest buttermilk for this festive cake.

On the lighter side There were two Catholic laymen from Bismarck who were shipwrecked on a desert

island. The minute they got to the island, one of them started screaming, “We’re going to die! We’re going

to die! There’s no food! There’s no water! We’re going to die!” The second man was propped up against a

palm tree and acting so calmly that it drove the first man crazy. “Don’t you understand? We’re going to

die!”, the first man said. “You don’t understand. I am a wealthy businessman and make over $1,000,000

each year”, said the second man. The first man looked at him quite dumfounded and asked, “What difference does that

make! We’re on an island with no food and no water. We’re going to die!” The second man answered, “You just don’t get

it. I give 10% of my annual income to the God’s Share Appeal. Trust me, the bishop will find me.”
