pastor’s notebook

“All of us are called to be hospitality ministers, to welcome people, greet people, move in the pews for people, to smile at

someone new or say 'it’s good to see you again' to someone who comes regularly.”

NOT THE PASTOR'S NOTEBOOK!One of the things I love about our community, and a large reason I am practicing my faith as an adult, is the hospitality and sense of belonging that I found here. This is not present in every church and it is not something that just happens on its own. It takes loving, hospitable people. When I first came to this parish as a 19 year-old, it was this that kept me coming back and eventually helped me

open my heart to the love and truth of Jesus Christ. These gifts of hospitality and belonging were so impactful that, after starting a family in California years later, my wife Erika and I made the decision to move our family to Olympia so we could give this same gift to our children: a loving and welcom-ing community of faith. Now our children love this community and we see the incredible difference it is making in their lives. Praise be to God.

Over the last few years our parish has been work-ing hard to deepen our sense of hospitality and provide an experience on Sunday where every-one is welcomed as Christ, where everyone feels like they belong. Most recently, we have hired a Steward for Hospitality, Jackie Shirley, and she is working with a team to develop a robust hospitality ministry. Soon you will see a hospitality desk in our Gathering Space and more staff presence at all Sunday liturgies. This will allow us to welcome new people and answer any ques-tions parishioners have. As we develop this ministry we ask for your prayers. We also ask that you consider how you are going to support this hospital-ity effort. All of us are called to be hospitality ministers, to welcome people, greet people,

move in the pews for people, to smile at someone new or say “it’s good to see you again” to someone who comes regularly. All of us can do these things and in doing so deepen the experience people have when they walk through our doors.

Last week I was blessed with the opportunity to join a small group for a day and speak with them about the gift of the Eucharist. It was such a warm

and welcoming group. The leader prayed for everyone, people shared their prayer needs and God sightings for the week. It reminded me of when I first came to Saint Michael Parish in 1998 and joined a small group of people working to lead teens closer to Christ. It was my first experience of small groups and I found support, love, encourage-ment and strength to say yes to Jesus. Small groups have the ability to change lives, to nourish and strengthen us for the journey. They also provide opportunities for us to accompany and mentor others in the faith. Last weekend we kicked off the registration for Lenten Small Groups. For those of you that are not currently in a group, I encourage

you to prayerfully consider joining one. We are not meant to walk this jour-ney alone. I have always found my faith enriched by journeying with others. As we seek to grow in Christ, may our Lord bless us with a deep longing to love and welcome those who come through our doors. May our community always be a place where people know and experience God’s love.

In Christ,

Chris Peterson Parish Administrator

CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY Coming up on Thursday, February 20, 9am–4pm

Our theme this year is Catholics for the Common Good. Join with Catholics from across Washington to raise your voices for the common good. Issues we plan to address include affordable housing, human trafficking, the death penalty and care for creation. The priority issues may change based on developments during the legislative session, and we will have updated information closer to the day itself. Our day in Olympia will include prayer, a keynote presentation on Washington State’s financial struc-ture, briefings on legislative issues, stories of how our advocacy is making a difference, and over 130 ap-pointments scheduled with legislators. Everyone from the same district will meet together with their legislators. Even if you do not feel comfort-able speaking on an issue, know that your presence will witness to your concern and commitment. Please note, there will be no Mass, gathering or sack lunch at SMP this year. Instead, there will be prayer as part of the gathering in the Columbia Room at the Capitol. Events include issue briefings, legislative visit training, and meetings with legislators. For more information Visit ipjc.org/cad or call (206) 223-1138

BREAD FOR THE WORLD LETTERSJoin us for a letter-signing effort before and after Masses on February 22/23. All ages are welcome to read, consider, comment, and sign letters. Save time by bringing three return address labels for your three letters—two senators and one representative.NutritionMillions of children around the world struggle to get proper nutrition. In the U.S., the hungriest time of the year for children is summertime when they no longer have access to school meals. Today, 22 percent, or 149 million, of the world’s chil-dren are not growing as they should. And being danger-ously thin continues to threaten the lives of 7 percent—or 49 million children under the age of 5.Congress has the opportunity through legislation to change the course of the lives of millions of children in the U.S. and abroad. They just need the political will to make it happen. All children deserve the opportunity to live a healthy life and reach their full potential. Join us in making this opportunity a reality!

PRAY FOR OUR CATECHUMENS/CANDIDATESThroughout the whole year we accompany men and women who are preparing to become Catholic. Catechumens are preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion while others, already baptized in other Christian communities, are preparing to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Please pray for these men and women that the Holy Spirit will strengthen them and bring to perfection the good work the Lord has begun in them. This week let us pray together: "Lord, guide our catechumens and all those preparing for the Sacraments of Christian initiation into the fullness of truth and keep them safe from error, doubt, and unbelief (RCIA 168)." For more information about the RCIA, contact Andrew Casad, Steward for Christian Initiation, at (360) 292-7127 or [email protected].

How did the original idea of Christianity turn into Catholicism?Since we exist in a mostly Protestant country, some of you might have heard people say things like

"Christianity and Catholicism are two different things!" Of course, when they say that, they typically don’t mean Christianity-as-practiced-for-thousands-of-years, but that Catholicism doesn’t quite look like the

“Bible-only” Protestant church they attend! Oftentimes someone might shore up this supposition by tacking on that Catholics worship Mary or the pope (which, of course, we don’t), or some other odd Catholic thing that we do. Interestingly, if you went to Mexico, or another country more strongly influenced by Catholicism, this question would be nearly incomprehensible. Here in the USA, I think our minority position can be helpful if we use our own words more clearly to assist our friends in understanding what we believe. Instead of saying, “I went to Church today,” we can say “I went to Mass,” because nobody else would use that word!

To answer the original question, we must ask the question: what does the term “Apostolic” mean in the Creed? When we say we believe in the one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, we are saying that we believe the same beliefs that the Apostles handed on. This is why we find Tradition so important—because Tradition hands down and reflects on what Jesus taught and did, and preserves it through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Anything that is "unorthodox" is literally translated as “not adhering to right teaching.” This is why we hear Peter and Paul telling their readers (or rather, the ones listening to their letters read) how important unity was, and to flee from any teaching that sounded in contradiction to what the Apostles taught (see Gal 1:6-9; 2 Cor 11:4; Rom 16:17; 2 John 1:7-11; 2 Pet 2; Rev 2:11-17). Ultimately, too, the unity of Jesus’ Church does not rely on just an idea, but a sacramental reality: Holy Orders exists for the Eucharist and the Sacraments—that is, the way that Jesus wants to enter into communion with us.

This unity also has a central head on earth: the pope. Early Christians often turned to the bishop of Rome to settle disputes and he often had a final say in theological matters. In fact, many conversions from “Christianity” to Catholicism have occured when people have read the Church Fathers—authors who wrote between AD 100 and AD 600—because they saw that what everyone thought was Christianity ... was, well … Catholicism! They were one and the same. The

most famous recent saint to which this happened was none other than St. John Henry Cardinal Newman.

SPSE EVANGELIZATION TIP:SITUATION: If a person is not a Catholic STRATEGY: Ask if they are a Christian. If so, we then want to give them a good reason to consider the Catholic Church. In doing so, we will first make common ground by proclaiming the Gospel or Kerygma to them. Then we will talk about the Church.KEY POINT TO REMEMBER: Jesus never intended us to be confused about truth. He wanted us to be sure about what we are to believe and how we are to get to heaven. That is why he founded an infallible Church with authority to teach and preach in His name. That Church is the Catholic Church. ASK: Does this make sense?
