BLESSED
When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar
one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the
prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in
the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who
have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as
short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help
spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati,
the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels.
How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude!

Pursuing a Higher Moral Standard
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers a rather
radical call to holiness. Many of us have a hard time
accepting that we are all called to such levels of morality.
Yet, read to whom Jesus is speaking here. The Gospel
says his audience is
everyone: his apostles,
his disciples, and a large
number of other people
from around the region.
The Second Vatican
Council offers a reminder
when it says, “Fortified
by so many and such
powerful means of
salvation, all the faithful,
whatever their condition
or state, are called by the
Lord, each in his own
way, to that perfect holiness whereby the Father himself
is perfect” (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church [Lumen
Gentium], 11).
A key to progress in any personal area is keeping
hungry, never being fully satisfied. The same goes for
our faith and relationship with our Lord. If our goal is to
be comfortable, to follow the path of least resistance,
then mediocrity is our goal. Jesus is anything but
mediocre. He proposes to us a high moral standard that
isn’t reached by coasting.
Our souls are hungry by design. They are never fully
satisfied in this life because we desire the Infinite—we
desire God.
Luckily, our Lord not only proposes a high moral ideal
of holiness, but he also gives us his very Spirit so we can
reach the heights he proposes. And so we can pray with
St. Augustine, “Give me what you command, and
command what you will.”

ADORACIÓN
BIENAVENTURADOS O DICHOSOS

ST.GIANNA RESPECT LIFE
CHOICE kills those without one! The tricky use
of words like “choice” has not only convinced women
to kill their babies but has also hoodwinked the
workers in abortion mills. Being INFORMED and
seeing behind the words; the sophisticated
“enlightening” slogans; and the slick political rhetoric,
is crucial. CHOOSING God as our maker and the
Creator of all life is the only “choice.”
Respect Life Meeting
ST. GIANNA RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE will meet
on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, after the 12:15
p.m. Mass in the St. Augustine Room.
THEY ARE BACK!!!!!!!
The Women of Saint Gregory the Great invite you to our
annual Day of Reflection. The theme for this day of
recollection is “Jesus is Enough.” We will consider what that
means from the perspective of the life of the Blessed Virgin
Mary and from our own perspective. We will reflect on
Scripture and Tradition, who Jesus is for us personally, and
practical applications to our call to be missionary disciples
amid situations we meet every day. There will be prayer,
song and fun. Join Sisters Pam and Sister Canice and the
Women of Saint Gregory the Great for this special day.
The event will be held at Hampton Hall on Tuesday,
March 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with lunch at 12
noon. The lunch will be 3 courses- salad, entrée and
dessert. The entrée choices are Fines herb chicken or
Portabella ravioli. The cost is $30. Please make your check
payable to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and
indicate on the memo line your choice of entrée. Mail your

The Ancient Order of Hibernians movement was founded by laymen in 16
th
century Ireland to protect clergy of
the Catholic faith from persecution by the English monarchy. By the 19
th
century, the organization was extended to
America to promote the interests and welfare of Irish immigrants in the New World. The primary purpose of the
organization today is to promote Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity among its members and to uphold and
sustain loyalty to the government of the United States of America.
The local Division of the AOH is active in St. Gregory the Great Parish life and through its fund-raising efforts
and Missions and Charity Programs in 2018 contributed $7,300 in support of Seminarians studying for the
priesthood or permanent diaconate in South Carolina and $6,000 to help support local Catholic schools, parish
religious education programs and other charitable organizations in the Low Country such as the St. Francis Center
