Just listening to the news makes us aware of how divided our country seems as well as the world in general. The only thing we seem to have in common is the pandemic. Even our church seems divided between, for lack of better words, liberals and conservatives. Things seem anything but normal.

Even two of our readings point out problems in their times. Jeremiah is berating the rulers of his times for their unfaithfulness to God and points out their actions have scattered the people. Paul is dealing with a division between Jews who follow Jesus, and the gentile converts who were once far away. It seems that division and bad government is not a new issue.

In the Gospel the apostles have returned from the mission Jesus has sent them on but instead of finding a quiet place when they return, the crowds increase. Jesus decides that the apostles need some rest and quiet and they leave for a deserted place, but the crowds find out where they are going and get there before them. What are Jesus and the apostles to do?

In all three readings the solution to each problem is the same – Jesus. Jeremiah tells the people that God will bring them back together. He says that God promises to give them good shepherds and one day will “… raise up a righteous shoot to David”. This shoot is Jesus.

Paul reminds the Jewish and gentile followers of Jesus that He died on the cross so that he “ … might create in himself one new person in place of the two” and it is through him that we have access to the Father.

Finally in the gospel we are told that Jesus when he saw the vast crowd his heart was moved with pity and became the Good Shepherd to them teaching the crowd many things. Jesus is the answer.

As we face times of division and trouble both in society and in our personal lives let us hold on to the one truth in our life, Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He died so that we all can be saved and brought to eternal life with him. Let us work and pray toward Jesus’ desire “that all may be one.”

Hermanos y hermanas:

Con solo escuchar las noticias, nos damos cuenta de lo dividido que parece nuestro país y el mundo en

general. Lo único que parece que tenemos en común es la pandemia. Incluso nuestra iglesia parece

dividida entre, a falta de mejores palabras, liberales y conservadores. Las cosas parecen todo menos

normales.

Incluso dos de nuestras lecturas señalan problemas en su época. Jeremías está reprendiendo a los

gobernantes de su época por su infidelidad a Dios y señala que sus acciones han dispersado al pueblo.

Pablo está lidiando con una división entre los judíos que siguen a Jesús y los gentiles conversos que

alguna vez estuvieron lejos. Parece que la división y el mal gobierno no es un tema nuevo.

En el Evangelio, los apóstoles han regresado de la misión a la que Jesús los

envió, pero en lugar de encontrar un lugar tranquilo cuando regresan, la multitud

aumenta. Jesús decide que los apóstoles necesitan un poco de descanso y

tranquilidad y se van a un lugar desierto, pero la multitud descubre a dónde van y llega antes que ellos. ¿Qué deben hacer Jesús y los apóstoles?

En las tres lecturas, la solución a cada problema es la misma: Jesús. Jeremías le dice al pueblo que Dios los

volverá a unir. Dice que Dios promete darles buenos pastores y que un día “… levantará una rama justa a

David”. Esta rama es Jesús.

Pablo les recuerda a los seguidores judíos y gentiles de Jesús que Él murió en la cruz para que él “…

pudiera crear en sí mismo una nueva persona en lugar de los dos” y es a través de él que tenemos

acceso al Padre.

Finalmente en el evangelio se nos dice que Jesús cuando vio la gran multitud, su corazón se conmovió

de lástima y se convirtió en el Buen Pastor para ellos, enseñándoles muchas cosas. Jesús es la respuesta.

Mientras enfrentamos tiempos de división y problemas tanto en la sociedad como en nuestra vida

personal, aferrémonos a la única verdad en nuestra vida, Jesús es nuestro Buen Pastor. Murió para que

todos podamos ser salvos y llevados a la vida eterna con él. Trabajemos y oremos por el deseo de Jesús de

"que todos sean uno".

The St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish Respect Life Ministry is again inviting all parishioners who believe in the sacredness of life and who stand to defend life especially the life of the unborn to join us in our next Prayer Vigil for Life. It will be on Saturday, August 14th from 9-10 am at the American Women’s Health Center at 110 S. River Road in Des Plaines. We decided to continue our Vigil at this abortion facility together with all other people who pray there on Saturdays. The purpose of this Prayer Vigil is to pray for the unborn, the expectant mothers who are persuaded to abort the babies in the womb, and the doctors and nurses in attendance.
