NETWORK OF SISTER NATURAL PROTECTED AREAS FOR MONARCH´S MONITORING IN MEXICO (RedANPs Monarca) In 1994 the Comission for the Environ- mental Cooperation(CEC) was created as a result of the North American Agreement of Environmental Cooperation in which the goverments of Canada, the USA and Mexico manifested their commitment for the conserva- tion, protection and restoration of the environment. North American Monarch Conser- vation Plan The North American Monarch Conserva- tion Plan (NAMCP) was part of those tri- national agreements of 1994. In 2007 the CEC council support- ed the creation of the NAMCP. CEC supported the trinational workshop of monarch´s experts to develop the NAMCP in Morelia, Michoacan in December 5th- 7th, 2007 In 2008 the NAMCP was published. The main goal of the plan is to maintain healthy Populations and conserved habitat of Monarch Butterfly through its flyway. In the NAMCP are the actions, priorities and goals that the three countries have to establish in order to reach the main goal. One of the main conservation goals of the NAMCP is the monitoring of the distribu- tion and abundance of Monarch´s popula- tions as well as the quality of its habitat (CCA, PANCMM 2008). The Plan also mentions the importance of society, institu- tions and gov- ernment create and support a national moni- toring program. Creation of RedANP Monarca In November of 2009, with support from CEC and CONANP, the Workshop for the Monitoring of Monarch Butterfly in Mexi- co was held in Aporo, Michoacan. Monarch experts, and representants of governmental agencies and Non-profits at- tended the workshop with the goal of devel- oping collaboration agreements among the Mexican Natural Protected Areas as well as the monitoring protocols appropiate for the monitoring of monarchs in Mexico. Monitoring Protocols (2009) PROTOCOL I. Breeding Sites PROTOCOL II. Monitoring of migration PROTOCOL III. Overwintering sites PROTOCOL IV. Habitat Monitoring RedANP Monarca initiates officially its work in June of 2010. Activities included the training for conducting the Monitoring of Migration and overwintering. RESULTS • In 2010 we conducted 2 workshops for North Region (Protocol II) Región Noreste-Sierra Madre Oriental) (80 people). • In 2010 we conducted 6 workshops in the Centro-Eje Neovolcánico and Occidente-Pacifico-Centro Protocol III: Rosario, Cerro Pelón y La Mesa (RBMM) Piedra Herrada (APRN Valle de Bravo), Joya Redonda (Co- munidad Atlautla) 180 people. • In 2011 were held 6 training work- shops in the overwintering areas. • 150 people are now in the Red ANPMonarca. At least 50 people participated in the Monitoring in 2010-2011 Three communities from the overwin- tering areas Capulin (Cerro Pelón), Cerro Prieto (Sierra Chincua) and Rosario (Rosario) conducted moni- toring in 2011-2012. • This is the only monarch monitoring program developed with the partici- pation of volunteers.
